Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

The Crazies

About the inhabitants of a small Iowa town suddenly plagued by insanity and then death after a mysterious toxin contaminates their water supply.
Bit of gore in places, but not much, got bored towards the end to be honest.

4/10

And...? Any good? I could watch it in the cinema as they've got a one off viewing. Worth doing or not?
Yeah, it's great. A very smart pastiche, but it stands on its own ideas too.

Not to bang on but it understands it's influences in a way that LaLa Land and The Artist don't.

Spoorloos (The Vanishing/Traceless)

Unfortunately, I was aware of the famous ending before watching, so I wasn't as blown away by the twist as many viewers are. Much to my surprise though, I find myself constantly thinking about the movie, Raymond's & Rex's motives, and Johanna ter Steege's fine portrayal of charming, irritating* Saskia.

A Nietzschean 7.5/10

* Pseud's Corner: Come to think of it, Saskia's personality (alluring, teasing etc) is in the nature of Mystery itself. Hmm...

Watched I, Daniel Blake over the summer. I thought it was a brilliant piece of film. No one does that aspect of British life like Ken Loach.

It was genuine, funny, heart breaking and moving. A very solid 8/10.

I had the misfortune of finally seeing La La Land yesterday. Completely vapid as expected, it's really just a substandard Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling rom-com with some tacked on forgettable musical segments.

American Made (2017)
Based on a true story which itself is surrounded by conspiracy theories that we really arent sure what the truth really is. You throw in the CIA, DEA, Contras, Medellin Cartel, Bush 1 and Bush 2, Clintons, Reagan, Oliver North... who else have I missed out and we have a real cloak and dagger story made into a Hollywoodified bio-pic of a Mr Nice Guy, drug runner called Barry Seal.

Its entertaining action-comedy with a storyline that has all the named real life players thrown in. But I left the bio-pic and the cinema wondering what the real truth really was.
And after all the reading up, you are left with the crazy conspiracies from Alex Jones to other folks who testified. The truth is actually even murkier and probably buried with files only to be opened long after we are all gone.

Wind River - Taylor Sheridan finally directs one of his scripts and does a serviceable job, workmanlike. Jeremy Renner plays a hunter on an Indian Reservation who finds a young woman raped and murdered and helps Elisabeth Olsen's FBI agent investigate. Killed an hour and a half, if you liked Hell or High Water you'll enjoy this.

Watched "Spoorloos" again last weekend, like you I knew the twist as I'd seen it before but have to agree its very very good and much better than the American remake.

Rush (2013) - didn't find anything interesting from new ones so went for the second viewing. Didn't regret at all.

Great movie. The intensity of the racing and rivalry between two drivers is brilliantly shown in the movie. You also don't have to be much of Formula 1 fan to enjoy this one. Also, if you knew the actual events before the start of the movie it doesn't do any harm in terms of excitement that it brings.
Along with Apollo 13 and Frost/Nixon best from Ron Howard imo.

Wonder Woman.
Woeful. False flag Facebook feminist fable for fecking fecks.

Her pouty "naive innocence" looked like bimboism to me. That she can quote the croaking chorus from the Frogs of Aristophanes just added to the patronising, isn't she smart objectification.

The film was painful and so is the thought that James mansplainer Cameron might have got something right again.

How can you talk down Sarah Conner and Ripley in favour of this? https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/amp....woman-is-a-masterpiece-of-subversive-feminism

For the sequel they should just have her bash up Trump before snogging the hunk, it would have to be the best film ever.

So, so bad and so weirdly supported.

He didn't strike me as a nice guy at all. I got smarmy opportunist more then anything.

Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Cruise's best performance in ages... and I love a bit of Tom Cruise.

Just watched the original It (1990). I guess it's scary when you're a kid but watching it as an adult...jesus, could it be anymore cheesier? Some of the acting.

Death Note

Not seen the original, this is not has bad as I expected it to be.
The acting was OK, I liked the story, but the ending was dreadful.

4/10

Seriously buddy, if you have even a little bit of energy left to watch one animated TV show in your life (even with your wife/girl) - watch death note. You won't regret it & it's a relatively short TV show too.

Prisoners (2013) - 3/10

Was excited to watch this film from the same guy who directed "Arrival". Only to be let down by awful performances from almost everyone involved. Overindulgent, disconnected and forcefully emotional. The only driving force was the plot and cinematography which helped maintain the suspense. I have no issues with Jake Gyllenhaal as an actor, but he was trying waaay too hard in this one.

3/10?! Christ... did R.N7 hack your account?

I get that it might not be your cup of tea but giving a great film like prisoners just a 3 is really taking the piss a bit tbf.

The story is really good. The plot is very cleverly devised and offers a different take on a typical missing person crime genre. Credit to the writer for coming up with it. But the acting was piss poor. None of the performances seem justified and that only means wasted potential. Especially with a cast as good as that.

Daylights End
In a world that's run down due to a zombie outbreak, a drifter groups with a band of survivors against a group of killer running zombies straight out of 28 Days Later. Pretty fotgettable action zombie movie. I watched it yesterday and don't remember anything except shooting zombies and hiding. Slightly fun while it lasted 4/10

La Dolce Vita. 2/10. Tries hard and fails abysmally. Could have been made by a first year art student.

American Made: Tom Cruise continues to use that weird superficial charm of his that we’ve seen in varying degrees with both Magnolia and Edge of Tomorrow, here it’s used with similarly positive results. He plays a former airline pilot turned arms and drugs runner for both South American drug cartels and the CIA, as well as at one stage the FBI and armed paramilitaries if I remember correctly. The film chooses to remain on the lighter more comedic side of things - rightly in my opinion - but throws in some occasional moments of violence to punctuate the general levity. Well put together and quite bright and breezy this was never gonna dwell on some of the more serious aspects of the drugs and arms trade or require much more from Cruise in acting terms than a rather zany, man out of his depth but still swimming type performance. A good afternoon’s entertainment and I can’t say I didn’t really enjoy it whilst it lasted although I also wouldn’t say it left a lasting impression or had much substance beneath its superficial surface.

I thought The Limehouse Golem was quite poor really and it's another perfunctory script from Jane Goldman. I was hoping for at least a cheap knock off From Hell (like the film adaptation of the Moore-Campbell comic) but this is more like one of those dreary sunday evening ITV crime dramas, with a few images stolen from the comic. The mystery is very straightforward and the twists and solution are telegraphed. Every 10 minutes a different character stands up to loudly impart another 2017 politically progressive pearl of wisdom upon these filthy backwards Landoners; or the hindsight mechanic. It's not very clever or macabre or violent or salacious. It's not a badly made film but it's disappointingly inert. Worst of all there is no golem to be seen.

Do I sense a sitcom where they're roommates coming up?

Indeed. Two versions, one written by RN.7 where there's complex dream sequences and subtle jokes only a dedicated viewer will understand after multiple watching, and one by Pauldy that's absolutely batshit mental and which should be terrible but somehow manages to be brilliant. Both gain a cult following.

At your current rate of progression you'll be watching snuff films by the years end.

It - both overlong and rushed. I enjoyed it for about half an hour, it's an old fashioned horror film and had a decent budget so looks good, but it can't contain the story and goes off the rails. There are a lot of forgotten details and weird edits and only half the kids can act.

The Intern
Not a bad premise, with a social media company taking a 70 year old Robert De Niro on for a laugh.
Anne Hathaway's boss character is annoying, as are most of the vapid staff. It ends up being less a satire on the pace and emptiness of social media, more patronising message that old man and talking face to face have their virtues.
Killed two hours of a 12 hour flight, but was constantly zoning out. 3/10

I finally, after years of intending to do so, got round to watching Apocalypto. I have no idea how Mel Gibson managed to get this one made (Listen fellas, I need 50 million dollars to make a film about Mayans, that stars mostly untrained actors, certainly no famous people, is in a foreign language, and that language is a dead language... sound good?) but fair fecks to the guy, he made a spectacular film.

Loved it.

Spectacular is the word, great film !!!

Me Before You
Emilia Clarke has to look after a quadriplegic wealthy dude and starts to fall in love with him but then finds out that he wants to end his life. Was the wife's pick and I wasn't happy about her choice but found myself pleasantly surprised. Had charm, some funny moments and some touching ones too. Just couldn't get over the fact that Khaleesi didn't summon dragons at any point. Think she will become type-casted 7/10

Raw

A vegetarian girl goes to vet school and suddenly gains an unhealthy craving for human meat. So it was my turn and I wasted it on this pretentious piece of shit. It was the sort of boring art house film that makes me want to bash my head against a wall. There were some gory moments that made me wince but I was looking at the clock more and more every minute 2/10

It Comes At Night

A man has to look after his family as an unknown virus threatens their safety. He is pedantic in his safety measures, which go out the window when a family looking for help are brought in. I can see why people felt screwed over by this film after watching the trailer but luckily for me, I don't watch horror film trailers so I absolutely loved this. It's the kind of suspenseful/psychological horror that I lust for and hardly ever get. Had a Shining feel to it with the claustrophobic camera work, using tons of close ups and slow zooms/pans. The acting was on point and I urge people to give this a go 8.5/10

Surprised you didn't like it Schwein, I thought it was quite good. Not the best film ever, but a solid effort especially considering it was the director's (a woman, as well) first film.

The Girl on the Train

Meh... The book isn't brilliant but it's much better. The screenplay was the main problem and some characters were without any depth. The tension starts only in the last part of the movie, all before is more drama than a thriller but my main complaint is that should be much darker than it is.
The cast was good but I think they couldn't do much better with that script. It's a decent movie to kill 2 hours of your time, but that's about it and I assume that people who haven't read the book will be able to enjoy it more.

Gone Girl is a superior movie in every way and I'm not the biggest fan of that one also.
