Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Ah I hardly watch any Adult Swim or David Firth stuff so I wonder if that had a impact.

I do have a few criticisms, while I did like that they chucked a loads of ideas in, I wished it had been more put together, something in the vein of Pulp Fiction or Boogie Nights, where the characters are in someway connect together or connect to the setting. The film is set around a earthquake in LA but never seems clear that all the character have been affected by it, at least two of the character only mention it in passing and one whole story arch never mentions it at all. Also (And maybe they couldn't do this for budget reasons)I would have loved to see more of LA, we get a glimpse of it when the Asian lady escapes and sees the flying turkeys but apart from that most of the film seems spent indoors.

Still I ''enjoyed'' my time with the film, as you said the soundtrack is great(Flying Lotus ambient stuff is very underrated), for such a gross film it was a times beautifully shot - some of the parts in the forrest where especially nice(I think there was a reference to Tarkovsky in some of the water shots.) and the complete gross out horror similar to the Evil Dead 2 was nice to see as well.

Overall I would be interested to see why Flying Lotus does next.
Should have spent more time and energy on writing than on special effects.

The Tale of the Princess Kaguya - I wasn't totally into it most of the time, a bit laborious with some odd flashes of brilliant animation and the flying scene towards the end felt a bit tacked on in a "this is a Ghibli film after all so lets have a flying scene for no reason" way. But yeah, when the whole celestial carnival descended I couldn't help but get smitten as well.

Wind River - Intense, emotional and engaging thriller. This is one of the best films of the year so far. Renner was excellent and Olsen was very good as well. I highly reccommend this. 8.5/10

Death Note - I didn't think this was too bad, it was quite entertaining actually. I never managed to finish the anime but this was different from what I remember. The acting is quite poor at times though (I was literally laughing in the scene where he first meets Ryuk). 6/10

Death Note (2017) - Just finished watching the Netflix adaptation of this once great anime series. They have managed to bastardise the whole concept into a huge steaming pile of emo horse shit. Poor acting, and in general they have done a terrible job of trying to squeeze a whole series into a film. So bad its funny at times. 1.1/10

Thought it would be shit but had a glimmer of hope as I'm a fan of Adam Wingard. I'll give this a miss. I might revisit the anime, really enjoyed it up until the second half of the last season.

Primal Fear (1996): 7.5/10

Aaaaaand as usual the 90s do not fail me. Good movie, with a nice ending. Damn it Hollywood, make these kind of movies again.

Watched Moana the other day. Was excellent. Best Disney movie in ages and the soundtrack is brilliant.

No idea if it's been reviewed already but it's just hit Netflix. I thought I was all zombied-out. Not so.

Train to Busan

The movie pulls inspiration from a huge number of films but comes out feeling entirely fresh and new. It feels genuine throughout and has exactly the right amount of set-up before the actual main body of the film starts on the train. Many characters die en-masse but the single death scenes occur to characters that feel meaningful, despite those characters only have a small amount of screen-time to attach themselves to you. As always, the worst monsters in the movie are the humans and the character arcs of the CEO, Fund Manager and well-dressed Hero are well crafted. The token kid has some scene stealing lines and is cute as all hell.

TL/DR - Perfectly paced satirical social commentary with fast-zombies (because who wants slow zombies) - 8/10
What do you think, is it too much for my boys (9 & 11)? They've seen I Am Legend and played Fallout 4 and were stoked.

Hellraiser - I'd never watched this before last night, thoroughly enjoyable horror romp made in 1987

I wouldn't want them exposed to it. Very bloody and violent. Especially for a 9 year old.

If you let them watch 28 days later then this would be ok.

Have you seen Snowpiercer? It's similar to that (not just because of the train).

It makes I Am Legend and Fallout 4 look like a Disney movie though. It's an adult movie 100%. They would have little chance in understanding the themes in it, even if they thought "Slit throats and suicide... cool".

I think I'm tryin to say 'Fcuk No' without trying to parent your kids. lol.

Has Netflix even made 1 good original movie?

"Netflix Originals" rarely means they made it. It doesn't even always mean that they financed it from day one.

It simply means that they paid lots of money to get sole online rights to it.

Their business is box set binge watching. Not movies. They run on an hours of consumed content model. Not 90 minutes of cinematic mastery.

Yeah thanks. They can take gore stuff but like dying kids or parents is too much. The 9 year old cried when Will Smith had to put his dog down but all the other killing wasn't really disturbing to him.

Seen Girls Trip this past week. Hilarious. I have no idea why but I laughed at things I shouldn't have. I'm not a fan of pee jokes and comedy penis yet in this film I didn't mind them.

Carlos - Pretty enthralling stuff for the most part of it's lengthy duration, though it ran out of steam quite badly during the third part. I liked it's authentic feel, multiple languages, making sure that Carlos was played by an actual Venezuelan and so forth.

Che Part One - My god, this was so dull. I'm not sure if I'll bother with the second part.

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre was a surprisingly great film. Should perhaps give Poltergeist a watch.
Have you never seen Poltergeist? It's one of the best horror/supernatural films ever made, in my opinion. Apparently Hooper was a bit used by Spielberg as almost a puppet director, but watch it anyway if you can.

Really? I switched it off after half an hour or so, thought it was terrible. What did you like about it?

The Big Sick - it's alright. Has Apatow's fingerprints all over it ie people standing still and repeating five versions of the same joke to each other. It's kind of funny and kind of touching but not a lot of either.

Classic Disney. Great songs and feel good story telling, whilst not sticking to the cliche Disney Princess.

It's just a Disney movie so obviously isn't some complex thriller, but for that genre I thought it was great.

Okja? Beasts of No Nation?

You're right in general though. For a company that makes consistently good series, they fund a hell of a lot of shit films. The Circle was probably one of the worst things I've seen this year. A technophobia thriller from the kind of daft quasi-luddites who think webcams are the height of new cutting edge modernity and will inevitably be the death of us all.

Maybe I didn't get far enough in but I thought the songs were terrible. Not a patch on something like Aladdin. Anyway, two grown ass men arguing about the soundtrack in a kids film!

Glad you enjoyed it :D

That was Netflix? I was almost pulling my eyes out during that film. Emma Blandson was awful in it.

Downfall

Had not seen it before and it's unusual to see a German-made WW2 film. One of the better war films, about Hitler's last days in his bunker in Berlin. The basic events are correct but not sure how much of the details and dialogue were authentic. Very powerful and a compelling impersonation of the fuhrer. 9/10

It was awful without Emma Watson, but with her it was actively hateful. I've no idea what point it was trying to make either. Millenials & webcams = evil, cabin dwelling sculpture hipsters = good? John Boyega likes to hide wine in bushes? Some films even Tom Hanks can't save?

Death Note was also appalling. I haven't read the anime, but it was screamingly obvious it was a long form story condensed into a ludicrously rushed movie. It didn't help that all the main characters were horrible emo dicks with no redeeming features and criminally terrible hair either.

Fecking hell that was John Boyega yeah. I think my mind was so actively annoyed at Watson that I blanked that out.

I prefer not talking about it, it's painful just thinking back to it.

The original manga was a masterpiece, it's very intellectual and challenging to keep up. They'd be hard pressed to make a mini drama out of it let alone a 2 hour movie.

Much of the thought processes are much more clearer and elaborate in manga where they took time to really explain what's going on. I guess something just arent meant to be made movie.

Close Encounters Of The Third Kind
People have been begging me to watch this classic for a while and finally I have. Maybe it's because I've seen it so late, but I didn't love it. The tone of the film was all over the place and the story was revealed way too slow for my liking. Some good themes were covered but I was bored for quite a few periods of the movie 5/10

Moana

I think this looks amazing and I appreciated the fact that it wasn't the typical Princess story about falling in love. The two main songs were great and it moved along at a decent pace. However, the rest of the songs were forgettable but I didn't mind that too much as I was really enjoying the journey. This is a film I'd love to show my daughter when she's a bit older 8/10

All Hallows Eve

A baby sitter and two children find a video tape in one of their candy bags, that contains the separate horrific films linked to a strange clown. So an anthology movie with the baby sitter bit as the anchor. The main story was silly, the baby sitter let these two kids watch a gruesome film that contains decapitation and rape then tells them to go straight to bed  the first film segment was ok, quite tense and gory. The second segment was an abortion of a film and the third was not awful but the protagonist kept making stupid decisions, which is a pet peeve of mine. Overall it was ok but not great. I can see this becoming a cult horror film in the future 5.5/10

Trolls

An animated musical where the songs are just renditions of popular music. Lazy. There were too many star voices, which I don't like. The story was a bit twee and overall a very underwhelming film, but I'm sure kids will love it. I did enjoy the Justin Timberlake and Anna Kendrick cover of true colours 4/10
