Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

I watched that Spotlight last night. It was good acting an' shit but ultimately the story just isn't that interesting. Would have been far better as a documentary. It's really hard to make journalists interesting and the only one who was is the Mark Ruffalo one, and that's only because he kept getting angry.

Snowden - Meh. The whole story about mass surveillance is such an interesting one but Snowden's personal story isn't. It is nice to see his motivations behind why he decided to reveal what he did but you also get all the drama with the girlfriend. Just watch citizen four instead. 5/10.

Cat People (1982) - A bit of a mess but it had some really nice carnal and nightmarish sequences. Schrader's coke-fuelled obsession with Natjassa Kinski at the time really transferred onto the screen too. I liked it more than the orginal.

Just watched Captain Phillips again, what a wonderful movie. Can't help but feel sorry not only for the captain himself, but especially sorry for the Somali pirates, who were so young and misguided that they felt forced to do this. Powerful film.

WarGames The Dead Code.

A squeal to the original WarGames, that I did not even know they had made.
Not a patch on the first one and pretty much repeats the plot from the original, but I quite liked it,thought it was better than the reviews I had read.
Dr Falken makes a return and so does the WOPR computer.
Acting was decent enough, it passed away 95 mins very well.

5/10

I've been looking for this. Is it on TCM? I mistakenly recorded the Albert Finney one which is pretty poor in comparison. I'm planning to watch Oliver! later too.
Saw Oliver! on TCM too. Shame the film left out 2 of the songs - I Shall Scream and My Name. Oliver Reed was not menacing enough to be Bill Sykes, despite his reputation as a bad boy.

Incarnate

A scientist with the ability to enter the subconscious minds of the possessed must save a young boy from the grips of a demon with powers never seen before, while facing the horrors of his past.
I different slant than any other possession film I have seen and I liked it.
Not really very scary, but there is still a few jump scares in to keep you paying attention (and often very unexpected) along with even a twist thrown in just when you have it all figured out.
Defiantly one of the better possession film I have watched.

6/10

Passengers

Lost in Space romantic drama with a shaky plot line. Lead characters have good chemistry but they still can't carry the lack of depth in the film. Why were Lawrence Fishburne and Andy Garcia even cast for such trivial roles?

Not bad, but not really good either.

6/10

Love a good possession movie, will watch this tonight.

Any Given Sunday - God what a mess, horrible editing, shaky camera, crap montages, cameos for the sake of cameos, too much technical jargon, characters you can't give a feck about, it was just like a long 90's rap video. What idiot came up with the eyeball thing too? North Dallas Forty is still the best NFL movie.

Yep. The Ben hur shit was really annoying too. Goldie Hawn's Wildcats was a much better American Rugby film.

Where The Day Takes You (1991): 7/10

Damn, this was hard-hitting and gritty. It's about street kids in LA, I can't imagine how they can live like that. Interesting cast as well, a young Will Smith, Sam from LOTR, Kyle Maclachlan, Lara Flynn Boyle etc.

It was utterly boring to the point I was actually annoyed when it won best picture over Room.

Spotlight : I don't know why I keep watching movies mentioned in here or why I left 'I' in bold, but watched this last night. Keaton almost made it compelling, but it was no All the Presidents Men. Or even an episode of Frontline. And Rachel McAdams never wore any tight jeans. 13/20.

She was so bland in this...and some other bloke...with a fridge...no idea what his name was. The oppressiveness of the institution was done far more effectively in All The President's Men, plus you had the drama of Deep Throat and the tension between the two leads. This was just a load of boring people. feck me, how boring was Liev Shreiber? The white-haired bloke? Even Keaton had feck-all juicy lines. Tucci was weird-boring, eating his soup and being busy all the time.

I re-watched Paterson and LaLa Land with the missus. The former is better the second time because my mind wasn't trying to predict where the tension would come from and I could just enjoy the various interactions. The latter suffered because when you look past the charm of the two leads it's a little bit lacking and there is definitely a sag in the middle. Still good though.

Sausage Party: Should have turned it off after 10 mins and saved myself the time. It's just not funny.
I turned it off after about 20 and regret giving it that long. Awful awful stuff, you could tell the entire premise boiled down to "make these animated food characters swear as much as possible, it'll be hilarious". It wasn't.

Dressed to Kill - Man, I really hate Brian DePalma. A Hitchcock pastiche with crass sleaze jacked up by a hundredfold that just reeked of transphobia.

I don't think transphobia existed at the time, and the word certainly didn't. Back then it was just weird shit; it had yet to be transformed (sorry) into another liberal cause du jour.

The Breakfast Club - It seems like I have to be a grouchy cynic again...I mean, it had it's moments, especially at the beginning of the film, when it still felt kinda real but then the characters started to turn their moods on a dime and change in very contrived ways to fit the scenes, then there was the baffling dance scene, a make-over of the "ugly" girl (I thought being yourself was the message?), tacked on romance, and finally they end it all on a freeze-frame and a fist bump...Oh, you 1980's.

Gremlins

Thought I'd take a Xmas trip down nostalgia lane for this one and boy has this aged badly. So much so I think it's fair to question the notion that it was ever any good in the first place. Aside from the cruddy puppets there are some genuinely odd and uncomfortable scenes like the 10 minute section of Gremlins running rampant in Phoebe Cates bar where there's no music or dialogue. It's just weird. Like they forgot to put it through post production. With the dog being the best actor in the movie I am satisfied that there is now a very good reason why they hardly ever show this on tv. Not a classic by any stretch.

I still love this movie. But it's no Princess Bride or Big Trouble in Little China.

It's cute how naughty Americans think the word "cnut" is...Bless 'em

Annie Hall 8/10
Small Time Crooks 8/10
Love and Death 6/10

The Girl On The Train - 4/10
I loved the book, but the movie was an utter mess. Terrible flow to it, bad acting and everything just seemed so rushed. The characters were not developed well and there were too many holes in the way it was directed.

The Count of Monte Cristo - 7/10
Decent story and a nice easy to watch movie on a lazy afternoon.

Secret in Their Eyes (2015) - 7/10
Another really easy to follow movie that was enjoyable on a rainy afternoon. I liked the characters, and the ending was surprising but slightly rushed. Nicole Kidman is hot.

Been trying to cram films in over past few weeks so I can do a 'best of 2016' list tonight.

Heaven Knows What - 9/10
Nocturnal Animals - 7/10
Nasty Baby - 6/10
The Neon Demon - 5/10
Victoria - 8/10

Going watching Paterson today...
