Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Battlefield Earth?
Was never able to sit through more than about 10 minutes of that. Pulp Fiction had to be one of the greatest comebacks in Hollywood history though.
Even Face/Off, despite its inherent silliness and the fact it's half an hour too long, was entertaining.

Yep, Pulp Fiction is still one of my favourites and Face/Off is batshit crazy and entertaining.

The shelf life of comedians tend to be fairly short, edgy at first then they become complacent and tame. I guess the same can be said about Murphy and I wonder if his schtick has aged with grace or not.

Decent? Bowfinger is great...

He did that and Life that year... which isn't as good as Bowfinger, but still a film I enjoy.

more than great! a masterpiece!

I remember i was in my last years of high school back then and we would laugh our asses out talking about it with my mate.

Really underrated movie, just like Saving Silverman.

I'm due a re-re-re-rewatch sometime soon.

True. The Dog in the high heels scene is fantastic

American Honey - Lush, raw and real romp. It treaded into some of the same territories Korine did with Spring Breakers. It was aimless and sprawling, sort of looking for a meaning, just like the characters but didn't really grasp anything, which is pretty fair, the scenes with Sasha Lane and Shia were the ones that worked best, due to their chemistry. It was a bit too long, really fizzled out towards the end and left a rather hollow after taste. It sounds like I didn't enjoy it but I did. Killing soundtrack also, the best cinematic use of OG Maco I've seen so far.

The Handmaiden is as fecked up as you'd expect a Chan-wook Park movie to be, and it's really long and complicated as fook, but I loved it. Brilliantly crafted story with some great lezzer action to boot.

To go back in time (before most of you were born), I am watching A Christmas Carol with Alistair Sim (1951). His performance is astonishing. Watch it if you can.

I've been looking for this. Is it on TCM? I mistakenly recorded the Albert Finney one which is pretty poor in comparison. I'm planning to watch Oliver! later too.

I really liked this film (although my expectations were a little too high because I love Arnold and LeBeouf) - the cinematography was amazing, the skylines, landscapes - the performances from the non-actors were great. I agree it was a little too long though. I feel like I want to see it again, but not for a long time yet (because of the excessive running time)

C5 are showing a remastered version tonight, the 1951 one is my favorite version.
I watched the Albert Finny one a few days ago , it is still pretty good and the Patrick Stewart one is good, but Alister Simm is by far and away the best.

I Am Not A Serial Killer.

Good film, quite an interesting premise which involves a sociopath with murderous tendencies that takes it upon himself to investigate a series of murders. Worth a watch.

Fortunately, my friends where I am staying in Somerset UK have the dvd. If you watch it, pay attention to the little facial details Sims makes.

Yeah, it reminded me a lot of Fish Tank and I'd also like to revisit at some point. I've had the song American Honey stuck in my head ever since, which is annoying since I thought that scene came alarmingly close to being a bit Cameron Crowe-ish. Also, Arielle Holmes' Star Wars obsessed character reminded me a lot of the type of girls I've been dating lately.

Sasha Lane though <3

Does she ever get those perky little boobs out?

Daddy's Home (2015)

Watched this on NOW TV yesterday. Comedy starring Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell. While certainly not a fan of Ferrell and Wahlberg really can't act for toffee (always looks like he's just recalling lines from memory rather than 'acting'), this film genuinely had me laughing all the way through and that's not happened in a long time. A comical battle of wits, vying for the love and attention of two young children swiftly ensues when an estranged street savvy father (Wahlberg) suddenly returns to reclaim the family that uptight husband and stepfather (Ferrell) is just getting settled into. Not over the top like most Ferrell movies and pitched just about right, I found this movie really funny. Usual, predictable conclusion with funny sting and cameo at the every end, definitely worth a watch if you're up for a laugh. Cardellini looks great in this by the way.

I'm giving this a 7/10.

Kung Fu Panda 3
More of the same from the previous two films. Found it entertaining and was quite funny. Didn't expect much more really and was content with this 7/10

Get Hard

Will Farrell is about to go jail and entrust Kevin Hart to teach him to survive in jail. Had some funny moments but the homophobic and racist jokes get tiring real quick. I never saw the hype about Allison Brie but seeing her in sexy underwear in this film has converted me 4/10

They are all pretty solid films. Firsts an 8/10 for me and the next 2 are 7/10s. Like you say, funny and entertaining. Jack Black was made for that role.

David Brent: Life On The Road
I wanted to like it but it was a pale shadow of The Office. Shame. 4/10

Starship Troopers (1997): 6.5/10

This was cheesy as hell but nevertheless a decent action flick. The girl who played Carmen was so hot.

Denise Richards? Great film. Verhoeven, Ironside, what's not to like.

This movie is actually a lot better than people give it credit for. If you've read a bit of space opera you'll appreciate how well they managed to convey the whole feel of the genre.

Great movie for what it is.

Hunt for Wilderpeople

Meh. A charming film and I'm not surprised it's popular.

Assassination Classroom

I watched this on the plane back from Shanghai to indulge myself in a final bit of Asiatic culture as I was depressed to be leaving and was really pleasantly surprised. I wasn't expecting much and it's not a classic but good fun.

Train To Busan. Above averge zombie actioner. With very much a video game sensibility it aint subtle but it delivers some good chase set pieces.

I enjoyed this but was slightly disappointed by the end, after a promising opening 45 minutes it seemed to tail off slightly. Like you said though, definitely an above average zombie flick.

People also usually fail to see that it's not at all what it seems to be on first inspection. It's a very clever (and very funny) satire - here's a good article about it.

Nocturnal Animals
Very interesting film. Love the way the narrative was told and the way the film was shot. Really good performance, especially Michael Shannon, Jake Gyllenhaal and Aaron Taylor Johnson. It really sticks with you after it's finished. Highly recommend 8/10

Looking forward to this one.
