Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

The Music Room - Stunning. Crumbling decadent aristocracy in the face of modernity. I actually put it on again after it had finished, which I never do. There's a song/dance scene towards the end that left me gobsmacked, I actually started welling up...such intensity.

Does it make it to the top 100?

Too right. Rob would have more dignity if he actually was a male gigolo.

The Fundamentals of Caring

Couldn't possibly be more by the numbers, but was still quite a heartwarming movie. 7/10

Tiger Raid (Simon Dixon) 2016

Came across this browsing for something to watch, and was not disappointed. It's essentially a dialogue between 2 merceneries out on a job and as the story unfolds, the film feels alive,as you watch the characters deal with feelings of trust and respect, fear and regret, violence and love. Despite its very dark nature, the film has some real funny moments. The soundtrack is perfectly atmospheric and makes the whole experience palpably visceral. It takes on some really heavy subject matter, and takes you on a ride that is uncomfortable but unmissable. Great stuff.

Imperium. Some awkward expository dialogue aside I thought it brought together a bunch of pretty solid thriller elements. A second decent performance by Potter after Swiss Army Man, he can actor I guess.

The Greasy Strangler is a grotesque black comedy about a greased up serial killer. Enjoyable if not entirely successful. It's not quite dark enough or funny enough for my tastes but the off-beat world is well realised and it has a strange grungy-pastel art design which I liked. It felt 15 minutes too long, though it's worth seeing for the committed performances alone. The 3 main actors did a great job.

I, Daniel Blake - equal parts infuriating and sad. I don't know if Ken Loach takes any liberties with the truth but as someone who has worked in public health the beaurocratic chicanery is real and this was believable.

Hoping to go see this tomorrow. I like Ken Loach, 2 time d'Or winner and yet he's nothing like Ronaldo.

La belle noiseuse - Like watching paint dry...in a good way. I'm finding it pretty hard to analyze this one at the moment. Aside from showing the painstaking creative process behind a work of art, I'm not sure there were that many trenchant insights, but it was quite a serene delight all the same. It never really dragged, the four hours pretty much flew by. A very nice restrained performance from Michel Piccoli too.

Possession - Now, I'm not usually one for overacting but I can cut it some slack in this, as it was such a mad spiral stairwell of hysteria and madness that started right off the bat at the bottom with everyone joining in as it went upwards. The camerawork was truly excellent, a really gritty depiction of Berlin and I liked that the occult elements served mostly to enhance the backbone of the film which was the pain of marital breakdown. It got a bit exhausting at times though it has to be said.

I tried watching sausage party other night as I was in the mood for a silly, easy watch and turned it off after 30 mins as it was complete trash.

I'm not really sure what I was expecting from that sort of movie but I Literally couldn't stand it.

At least you caught that one in time.
It was a close call.

Often when I search for a film in this thread I like to trawl through a few of my old posts and edit grammatical errors, poorly thought out formulations and just downright bad English. So, I reckon the last edited thingy will soon be found on every post I've ever made in this thread.

Invasion Of The Body Snatchers
Watched the original of this. it was decent, a lot of topics covered and there were some scenes of pure suspense but I can't take a film this old seriously as the acting felt exactly that... acting. still, it was decent 6/10

Cutter's Way - Man, this was a gloomy and miserable neo-noir. It was a bit lethargic and uneven but there was something appealing about this dark vision of sunny Santa Barbara, it was almost like The Big Lebowski played completely straight (Jeff Bridges and his angry army veteran friend goes against the local tycoon). It might have been one of last films of the New Hollyood era.

Sausage Party (2016)

i fall for the trailer and the metacritic score, thought it might be a good one, but nope. Some good laughs here and there, but overall, repetitive and basic sex jokes all the way. Not a clever comedy at all.

* cheap movie (20M) that is already over 100M in profit. Someone please raise the bar!!

3/10

Is that the one where they have the thing in the back of their neck? I grew up on those old Cold War sci-fi folms and Hammer Horror. Day the Earth Stood Still, Day the Earth Caught Fire etc...

Remember - this film starring Christopher Plummer is about an elderly Holocaust survivor with dementia who sets out to kill a Nazi war criminal. Fantastic film 8/10

I don't think so... well I don't remember the neck thing... it's aliens taking form as humans by duplicating their bodies.

3/10 is pretty generous if you ask me. Absolute crap.

The Imitation Game.

Brilliant film, Benedict Cumberbatch was outstanding, has was Keira Knightley.
Mixed feeling at the end , sad in the way he was tread and committed suicide, but happy that his invention cut 2 years off WW2 and he and his team saved approx 14 million lives.

8.5/10

Rocky Horror Picture Show

On Sky Prem now. Not my cup of tea but the dark-haired woman who seems to spend most of her time in her underwear is very watchable. That dream decent rack/slim waist and legs combo.
