Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Deathproof

Two separate sets of voluptuous women are stalked at different times by a scarred stuntman who uses his "death proof" cars to execute his murderous plans.
Not Tarantino' best film , but I enjoyed it.
The acting was OK , the story was pretty decent.
Plenty of references to other Tarantino films and you get Kurt Russelll doing his Jack Burton voice.

6.5/10
You should watch Planet Terror which is part of Grindhouse aswell. It's much better.

Sausage Party
Was really looking forward to this but it was poo. the profanity quickly wears off and your left with a story that a 5 year old could write. a few funny jokes here and there but they were all in the trailer. the orgy was funny though 4.5/10

In Vanda's Room - This was a really glacial watch, a docufiction which depicted Lisbon's olvidados going about their day to day lives, doing heroin as the neighbourhood around them was being demolished. It was shot digitally with a sort of painterly realism, scenes were staged almost like Vermeer paintings, which was beautiful to look at but I couldn't connect with any of it. The people in them were just as distant as the figures in the paintings.

Agreed, think the idea would have been better handled by Trey Parker and Matt Stone.

Rewatched Dead Man's Shoes last night and it's still awesome. Much better than This Is England, imo.

The Purge: Election Year | http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4094724/?ref_=nv_sr_1

So what to say? If you enjoyed the other two then you will probably like this one. Slightly worse acting than the second installment and about on par with the first. Also tries it's hand on a more meaningful plot with the political backdrop, which totally fails since The Purge series never ever should try to do anything meaningful and halfway thoughtful. Not very good and I actually liked the action better in the second installment, which did a better job of giving you a chaotic and lawless vibe. Will still rate this as a better movie than the first though. 2-3-1 is probably the way I'd rate the series. The only one I would consider watching again is the second installment.

Cockneys v Zombies.

What a mental film, but you know just what you are getting before you start watching.
Its not that bad actually, I think it has every person you have ever seen in any British drama, soap and gangster film from the past 50 years.
By far the strongest actor was Alan Ford who fills the character role of Grandad brilliantly
It even has a Chas and Dave song.
Decent film , with some decent music.

Well worth a watch.

Didn't like that one. Found "Attack The Block" way better. That one was actually halfway decent, also got me thinking about that guy from Arsenal-TV due to all the use of "blud" and "fam".

The Light Between Oceans - part one of my early November marathon. Beautifully shot nature porn, well acted, all very respectable. Pretty dull. I left it with the same feeling I had after watching Brooklyn; not much to criticise, just left me cold.

I kind of liked this although I know many didn't. Russell is great and I like the way he's seemly only motivated by causing pain- a proper psycho. Some of the dialogue scenes between the women are probably overlong though.

The Intern - Pretty formulaic film that fizzled out towards the end, but De Niro is just a class act. 6.5/10

The Hunger - It started off promising but then descended into a steamy hyper-stylized garish mess. Not enough Bowie.

Gentlemen Prefers Blondes - Thought this was a great subversive musical in which the two women and their friendship always comes up on top, featuring Jane Russel's razor sharp wit and Marilyn Monroe in probably her greatest role.

Take Care of Your Scarf, Tatiana - A man runs out of coffee, so he casually locks his mother in a cupboard, gets his car fixed by his vodka chugging friend and they go on the most mundane of road trips, drinking coffee and vodka at stops and later picking up two women along the way who they're too afraid to talk to. An unseen Kaurismäki film is always such a rare brief delight. Nothing really happens in this one, but it's still filled with the usual deadpan hilarity.

On the Silver Globe -

Striking nonsensical found footage Sci-Fi. It conjured up some fantastic imagery, like Terrence Malick on a bad acid trip, but the constant shouting of incoherent pseudo-philosophical ramblings in your face by hysterical actors got tedious pretty quickly. It's an unfinished film and it certainly felt like it. I'm surprised that I managed to finish it.

Storks - the premise about storks delivering babies but then doing another job as its 'easier' / less hassle then dealing with babies.
I thought it would be funnier than it was. Also thought it would be fun too. Kinda boring at times too. 4/10 tbh.

Jack Reacher (new one): Enjoyed it. I like Tom Cruise in this role. TBH, this could have been a mission impossible movie.
Havent read the books so dont have any idea of what Jack Reacher is meant to look like, but a decent action movie. 7/10.

It's almost more of a cocaine 80s movie than scarface. The implicit amount of cocaine and 80s inherent behind every frame is sensational. The trailer alone is a contact high.

It was acceptable in the 80s. Also, cocaine.

Someone was definitely out their mind as the ending made little sense.

You know it's an 80's film when every bedroom scene has to have an open window and long flowing white curtains.

Elle - oy gevalt. What a twisted, fecked up film. And so un-Verhoeven. I loved it and I'm not okay with that.

@Rooney in Paris your people are animals.

Huppert and Verhoeven are a good match as they both have a sort of perplexing quality about them.

I think the film could be accurately described as amoral. Huppert's face is capable of such brilliant micro-expressions.

Ouija: Origin of Evil | http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4361050/

Man this was good. Proper acting, proper story and proper scary. Very well done possession \ spirits movie with an alternative twist. Also I can't remember ever being spooked by a scary young girl in a movie before, including "the Ring", this one did it for me though. Better than one of my favourites from this year, "Lights out", and probably more at the level of something like "The Conjuring 2" from earlier this year. Another thing they did to a great effect was to create the genuine feeling of the time and age (1967), just like they managed with the 70's in the Conjuring.

8/10

I have this sat in my HDD , sounds good.

Edvard Munch (1974) - An utter masterpiece. It's not often I can say that I've watched something that is unlike anything I've ever seen before, but this was definitely such a case. It's such an encompassing work and it's kinda hard to break it down into details now straight after I've seen it, but I'm gonna give it a try...It's essentially a docudrama biopic of Edvard Munch, it's formalist, impressionistic and sensual, puts his work in a cultural and historical context, uses clever editing techniques, told in a linear way but jumps in time to show flashbacks of formative moments containing death, illness and lost love...sometimes juxtaposing different images and sounds against each other. It's a beautiful work that needs to be more widely known.

I felt as if there were invisible threads between us, I felt as if invisible threads from her hair still twisted themselves around me, and when she completely disappeared there over the ocean, then I felt still how it hurt where my heart bled because the threads could not be broken.

Just Dont.

Backtrack.

Psychologist Peter Bower's life is thrown into turmoil when he discovers a strange secret about his patients. Risking his own sanity, Peter delves into his past to uncover a terrifying secret which only he can put right. But is the reward worth risking more than a single life?
Went in to this knowing nothing about it , it was excellent.
Good story, good acting and a twist I honestly did not see coming.
i would recommend this.

Abattoir

An investigative reporter teams up with a Police officer to solve the mystery of why a seemingly good man murdered her sister's family.
It was OK , acting was a bit meh, the story was decent enough.
You could see the ending mile off, the film had its momments but not many.

4/10

Wise Blood (1979) nope, I just couldn't get it. Brad Dourif was excellent and as compelling as ever but the whole film was hard to get. I liked the weird soundtrack and some scenes were interesting, but as a whole it just left me cold. From what I've read it seems Huston got the tone all wrong compared to the book.
