Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

I believe they would have made it into a series if the shitshow that is TWD didn't already exist.

Rent

I think it outstays its welcome, losing momentum around the 1:30 mark, but there's some fantastic songs in here, and Jesse L. Martin is like the coolest guy (and finding out Rosario Dawson can sing was fun).

7/10

Not really on topic but oh well. I absolutely love Ennio Morricone's soundtracks.

What's everyone's favourite French films? I'm mostly curious to hear about @Rooney in Paris favourite films by Catherine Breillat, Phillipe Garrel & Leos Carax.
La Haine is great, altough a bit overrated. Intouchables was a nice film aswell. Haute Tension and Frontières are probably my 2 favourite french horror films.
There was also a pretty good one with Vincent Cassel (sp?) and Monica Belucci with a very disturbing rape scene of which the name escapes me.

Watched World War Z again the other day, it's good, but I can't help thinking they could have made a really good TV series out of it if they had at least partly followed the book, which was excellent. There was a lot of material they could have developed into a good show. But then again, it's very rare I have read a book and thought the film was better. I have have read though there is a sequel coming out in 2017 and they are planning a trilogy.

They should call it World War Zzzzzzz

Critters

Proper blast from the past and great fun. I find it funnier than the Gremlins movies, altough Gremlins 1 was great fun when one was younger. A bit more adult version of Gremlins, without taking itself too serious. I think I might acquire Critters 2 and 3 for later.

6/10

I'll probably edit this but...

I love La Haine. Very much enjoyed Polisse a few years ago. A lot of French comedies I find hilarious: the two OSS117 films, Le Dîner de Cons, La cité de la peur, Les 3 frères, Astérix & Obélix Mission Cléopâtre.

A lot of classics I haven't seen and I'm not a great fan of the New Wave period so that limits it somewhat.

Breathless is great, Belmondo is so cool. 400 Blows, Jean De Florette, Mesrine, The Closet.

Don't like Jacques Tati at all though.

I think I've watched two Tati films and I hated them both.

Hiroshima mon amour, La Cérémonie and The Passion of Joan of Arc might be my three favourite ones.

Irreversible?

EDIT: The parental advisory warnings are off the chart!

Rififi hasn't been mentioned yet, that's wonderful.

Watched Dazed and Confused last night for the first time and loved it. Not as good as the Before trilogy or Boyhood but probably more watchable, so much fun to spend the two hours with those characters - even/ especially the idiots. Hopefully Everybody Wants Some is half as good. Also had no idea about some of the cast - Ben Affleck, Milla Jocovich, Adam Goldberg (meh) looking younger than I've ever seen them. Long live Dicky Linklater!

Abbas Kiarostami has died. Close-Up is a masterpiece and there's so many of his film's I've yet to see.

Michael Cimino died the other day too. Such a strange man/career. I thought The Deer Hunter was pretty overrated and all. I've always been curious though if Heaven's Gate really is as bad as it's made out to be, might end up watching it.

Watched The Conjuring 2 last night and thought it was really good. Good story, decent acting, and very scary, I thought. James Wan is definitely the best in the genre at the moment, though like you @Dirty Schwein I'd like him to try something different.

Watched The Shallows last night, bit far-fetched at times but some good moments as well. Nothing special, but worth a watch if you liked The Reef.

The Visit (2015)

Seen on Sky Movies. Not sure what to make of this movie. I won't give too much of the plot away but it's another one of those hand held home movie films, where even now I find it amazing why when faced with their own certain death, people will still insist on wanting to capture the moment on film rather than just ditching the camera and making a bid for freedom. There were some genuinely creepy moments in this film, which has a nice twist towards the end that I didn't see coming. However, rather than screaming in fear, you end up screaming at the telly! Deanna Dunagan won a Best Supporting Actress gong, I believe for her role as the deranged Nana. She was very good I must admit but the rest of the acting was a bit lame. I just couldn't buy into the kids at all. Still not a bad effort from M. Night Shyamalan.

I'm giving this a 7/10.

The Deer Hunter played at the Astor here last week coincidentally, I was going to go see it but I've never felt that strongly about it. As for Heaven's Gate, some say it's a misunderstood masterpiece.

Heaven's Gate was too long. Cimino was self-indulgent in not cutting it more ruthlessly. There's a good film lurking in there somewhere.

Cape Fear (1991)

Really enjoyable film. Acting is superb. Robert De Niro, Nick Nolte and Jessica Lange are all very good but Juliette Lewis (as the daughter) steals the show. She is superb.

It's a classic. 8/10

Mad Max: Fury Road

It's all action, but its some of the best action I've ever seen in a movie. Charlize Theron and Tom hardy are both very good. And even the models (who look gorgeous) are pretty good.

I would have liked a bit more story/back story though.

8/10

I just got back from a late-night show and agree. it was terrific. So many horror films these days are cack but this one had some great scares, good acting and a very good story. Even had me pining for North London, the demon-infested rat-hole that it was as portrayed here.

Memoirs of a Geisha

Very interesting, looked beautiful. Could've done without Arnie as the lead though.

7/10

Fantastic film if you watch it back to front as you should.

Just watching Movie 43, wtf am I watching

I'd give it 6/10 as it could have been so much better.

Kate Winslet and Hugh Hackman!!:lol:

What did you make of it?

I thought it was good but it should and could have been loads better, a proper horror but it seems like they had a story and that was it, instead of improving it, which they could have easily.

Still enjoyed it but....

The director actually tricked a lot of the stars into making the film.

He told Kate Winslet and Hugh Jackman that the other was doing a short movie to trick them into signing up for it. Once he got that scene he used their names to bring in a load of stars who thought they would be working with those two but ended up not even seeing them. He then used the star power to get it properly produced and released world wide.

Saw Legend of Tarzan, and I liked the portrayal of Tarzan by AS. I liked it wasnt just an origin story. Was visually fantastic in iMax and story was ok, but you kinda know the story anyway. Doesnt take away from it, and thought SLJ was hilarious in it. MR is just a hottie too.

Heard about some bad reviews for this, along the lines of some actors phoning it in (hate that phrase btw), relies too much on CGI and not logical / realistic enough. But then, not sure what else you would expect from a Tarzan movie ...

Anyway, enjoyed it.

Watched Burning Bright last night, give it at least a 6.5/10 wasn't expecting much as its a straight to video film that was on the horror channel, it's definitely worth a watch though and far far better than the usual crap they show.

The Emperor's New Groove

This film was made just to be funny. And it succeeds, succeeds very well. It's very slapstick, very funny and has a nice theme about being a nice person. Voice actors are on point too.

8/10

So anybody watched Purge: Election Year yet?

I've seen the cinemasins video for that, it doesn't look very good.

Demolition (2015)

Jake Gyllenhaal is such a brilliant actor. He portrays an extreme emotion in a character fantastically. Oscars will come his way soon hopefully.
It's about a guy who loses his wife tragically, and how he handles it.

7/10, maybe 8/10.

The Innocents - I expected it to be a regular ghost story, was pleased that it wasn't. It had a few really creepy scenes.

It was all in her head, a good film about the psychological disintegration of a repressed mind.

That, and The Haunting, are two of the best filmed ghost stories, IMO.

Yep, good film and agreed on Gyllenhaal.
