Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Last night I watched a film called Coherence, a sci fi flick you've probably never heard of. Nice ideas and I enjoyed it. Personally I thought it lacked the tightness of some of the others mentioned, mainly in the exposition. Triangle, Primer, Time Crimes, Time Lapse being the pinnacle of that indie conceptual scifi stuff.

I actually reckon The Quiet Earth is a borderline masterpiece. Just about the finest depiction of desolation caught on film.

Watched Coherence myself last night and thought it was quite entertaining, will watch it again as lots going on and missed a few clues.

What's your favourite angry young man/alienation film? I'm watching Five Easy Pieces yet again. I think I've always identified with Bobby Dupea. That end scene is just devastating.

The Last Picture Show is a close second.

Saturday Night Sunday Morning
Repo Man
Into The Wild
Half Nelson

The Pack
A family must fight off a pack of wild dogs who terrorize them in their isolated farm home. The film wasnt as bad as the title suggests. It wasn't as low budget as I would have thought which is usually the case for these independent films by debutant directors, the acting was ok and there's some gore for those who want that.

But ultimately, all the family had to do was lock the door and the board the windows 5/10

The Passenger
Paris, Texas

Oslo, August 31st is probably the best one in recent years.

Hardcore Henry

Wtf did I just watch? It is like a GoPro homage to pure violence, absolutely no storytelling or context at all, just sheer violence filmed from a POV view. Also some jokes thrown into the mix.

I quite liked it - 6/10

It's basically a computer game. Nearly as good as Crank I thought.

The enjoyment of this film for me completely depends on how long you can stand the gimmick. For me it was 20 mins

What is that? A genre?

The Blackcoat's Daughter (aka February)
A film about two boarding school girls who have to spend the holidays at the school whilst waiting for their parents to pick them up and across town, there is another girl heading towards the school. To say anything more would ruin the story. It's a horror film but a real slow burn one. It has a chilling atmosphere, from the snow filled landscapes to the dialogue/lighting/character interactions etc. Everything is done to make the mood feel cold and bleak. There were some really creepy parts but these were few and far between. I felt some of the editing and framing of shots felt quite amateur and the script felt a bit forced to achieve a high brow horror feel. Overall I quite enjoyed it but you really need some patience to get through it 6/10

The Butterfly Effect

Bloody hell - that got me feeling sad really quick as the film went on towards the latter stages. Very good film, and despite the arguable simple plot, I thought it was well executed. 7(maybe an 8) out of 10.

10 Cloverfield Lane.

It was good and Goodman can be quite scary. Liked Winstead too. I would very much prefer if the film ended with Michelle escaping, getting on car, and seeing in the distance that weird looking....airplane...?

Leave something out for our imagination, director!

But we instead got the dullest alien encounter in quite some time. Hated that part.

Before he was a big name, Ryan Gosling is absolutely brilliant in The Believer as the self-hating Jew who walks around New York wearing a swastika t shirt and looking like a 70s/80s skinhead. I like the way he is so conflicted, he turns on his own culture because he finds faults in it, he is very intelligent, but he clearly doesn't have much respect for the bonehead racist thugs he spends time with who just hate for the sake of it. He is caught between the two worlds and ends up hating himself more than anything as he comes to realise who he really is. It's loosely based on a Jewish guy who was in the KKK and committed suicide when he was outed by a journalist ( i think, without actually checking) Great movie though, well worth a watch, came out around 2002 I think.

Curve

A young woman becomes trapped in her car after a hitch-hiker causes her to have an accident.
As survival films go, this one isn't bad but doesn't bring anything new to the table. It's more of a thriller than a horror because there's really not much blood and gore to speak of. Most of the film plods along quite predictably, including the twist at the end.
Acting was decent enough.

4.5/10

Hellions

A teenager must survive a Halloween night from Hell when malevolent trick-or-treaters come knocking at her door.
Not the worse Halloween themed I have seen, it was what it was, a run of the mill slasher film.

4/10

House of Manson

An unflinching chronicle of Charles Manson's life leading up to the orchestration of the Tate and LaBianca murders..
Bit of a slow burner this one , take a while to get going.
Decent acting and when the killing starts it it brutal.

7/10

There is a film that has been discussed here, about some guys that get followed and tortured by some neo-nazis or something, I think it came out last year or this year.

Anyone know which film I am thinking about? It is a horror I think.

Edit: Aha! found it. It is called "Green Room"

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4062536/?ref_=nv_sr_1

After witnessing a murder, a punk rock band is forced into a vicious fight for survival against a group of maniacal skinheads.

What can possibly go wrong? Not available at the usual sources yet though :(

Edit 2: Holeeh-shit, look at these ratings:

This one can now be acquired at the usual places @pauldyson1uk and @Dirty Schwein

Yeah good film that

Just watched Man of Steel and Batman vs Superman back to back:

Both films aren't very good, far too much action, far to long. The last acts of both films just don't make sense, I could go on.

Both films just average, both 5/10

So, just rewatched Lucky Number Slevin

Good and very entertaining film, altough the plot and "mystery" is weak and something you figure out about 10 minutes in. Seems like they threw in a lot of twists there just for the sake of it, not very subtle the way they hint about things either (for example the Detective talking about the guy being his bookie 20 years ago etc.) Still highly recommended due to a great cast and good acting, and I would give it 7,5/10

Next up on my 2006 list is Running Scared with Paul Walker. Quality flick and one of several good ones from 2006.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0404390/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_15

Also I am not a person, but a elaborate script made by pauldyson and DirtySchwein to sift through the net for movies and report back.

American Me (1992): 7/10

Man, 90s crime movies are so brutal and gritty and American Me can be added to that list. Not as good as Goodfellas but the movie about the La Eme (Mexican mafia) is powerful and realistic. I will never understand how people can live the life these gangsters live. Poverty can make crime attractive but these guys straight up murder people in the most brutal ways they can think of.

I don't remember it being too predictable upon first viewing, but you may be right. It's a nice film, not really that well known or recognized I think.
Interesting fact, Lucky Number Slevin was the third movie I reviewed in this thread.

Riveting stuff.
 A real Roger Ebert in the making.

Was Lucky number Slevin the one with Bruce Willis doing the Kansas city shuffle?

It had a great theme song. Wendy Rene - After Laughter, which was sampled in another great Wu-Tang song Tearz.

The Phoenix Incident

FF film based an an actual event. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phoenix_Lights and the disappearance of 4 men.
The faux documentary (mockumentary) stile really suits this movie because it kind of makes it feel like it actually happened and we are watching real footage of an alien encounter. Towards the end of the film everything gets a little too repetitive.
I am not a massive fan of FF Films , most of the time they are just crap, but this one I liked, one of the best ones I have seen.

6/10

Cherry Tree

Faith's world is turned upside down after she finds out that her beloved father is dying. When the mysteriously alluring Sissy Young becomes her field hockey coach.
It's quite well made, I like what the filmmakers were trying to do here. A young cast give performances that are pretty good for a genre flick, with lead actress Naomi Battrick very effective as a protagonist who must find reserves of inner strength in order to fight some very literal demons.
Very much Rosemary's Baby, on a low budget and lacking that classic film's atmosphere of deceit and dread.
I liked this , had a bit of gory, bit of horror and a silly bit at the end.
Not a classic but worth watching.

5/10

What Happened, Miss Simone? - Standard music documentary fare really, like reading a wikipedia article but with added quality footage.

High Plains Drifter - Bit of a bizarre film, Clint potters about in a small town, casually raping women, nothing much happens, one highlight was everyone painting the houses red, but not with blood you bet. I kept waiting for a massive showdown or something, more surrealistic/supernatural stuff, Lee Marvin, whatever, just something, but then it just kinda ended with very little fanfare.

Green Room

A punk band witness a murder at a Neo-Nazi concert facilliy and becomes hostages in a cat & mouse and siege game. True excitement and terror, one of those flicks where the director manages to set the mood and scene in a way that makes it feel genuine and that it is actually happening. One of the better movies in the genre. Also some brilliant acting with a special mention for boss-Nazi Jean Luc Picard. Some really gross scenes and all in all very violent. I have a tendency to get bored quickly and surf my phone during movies, didn't even think about it during this one.

As a movie - 7/10
As a movie in it's genre - 9/10
