Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Dredd (2012)

It was OK nothing special, much preferred the original with Stallone.
The guy playing Dredd, I thought was trying to hard to pull off the Stallone face and voice, he should of just done it his way and not tried to copy.

5/10

Christ Pauly, the Stallone film was fecking awful.

Saw Drive. I found it quite boring and irritating. Style over substance film making and even the style wasn't up to much. I thought The American with Clooney did the counterfeit Melville antihero stuff much better.

Don't agree with your points about Drive, but The American was a very good film, very understated and didn't get the recognition it deserved I feel. Definitely one to see.

When sudden and brutal violence is the best thing you can say about it then it can't be very good.

It's not the best thing, it's just something I enjoyed in the film. The best thing in the film was definitely the score. Don't get me wrong, I dont think this is a brilliant film or anything, I just dont think it's as bad as some people are making it out to be.

The Kill List

Watched it for the second time and enjoyed it more this time around as I spent the film trying to figure it out after the initial viewing. I dont want to ruin anything but people who have seen this film will know what I'm talking about. THEN I read the directors explanation of the film and got instantly deflated as he ruins the films intrigue. Still its a decent film but man the sound mix is poor. The dialogue and sound effects are on such different scales that I had to keep adjusting the audio levels on my TV. I initially thought it was the copy I had the first time around but this was a different file with the exact same audio problems. 7/10

Midnight Run

Really good 80’s action comedy. Stars Robert De Niro as a bounty hunter going up against his rival (John Ashton) after both are hired by a bail bondsman (John Pantoliano) to capture and bring in an accountant who is also wanted by his former mob boss employer. Plenty of spills and ups and downs along the way and a charismatic performance by De Niro as well as good all round performances from the cast make this a really good watch. Highly recommended.

Thanks, weird that there's no assigned button for it? Anyways...
I was initially in debate with myself wether it was all

1.A Dream - The main guy is 'awakened' many times, by his son, his wife, the friend etc. The friend dies similar to the rabbit near the beginning of the film, the cult at the end could have stemmed from the restaurant scene, where religion and christianity can be perceived as a cult, the sword battle from the start stems the HUNCHBACK battle etc...
2.Pre-planned by wife and possibly even his friend - This makes sense as to why his son pushes him at the start (probably instructed by the wife), to make him bleed as they need his blood to decide if he is a worthy member (which is later collected by the friends girlfriend during the dinner scene). His friend also saying "thank you" similarly to the Priest and Librarian as if he is also offering his death to be a part of this anti-christ ritual
3.Or his wife was not in on it but turned after she was captured - the fact that she fought off the cult and killed a few led to this obvious conclusion.

However, I read an interview wit the director who said that the wife wasn't a part of it and only laughs at the end because of irony, which sounds a bit lame and should have been left for interpretation in my opinion.

I just enjoyed the Stallone film slightly more. fecking awful is a bit strong.

Awful is a bit strong, but Dredd 3D is the better film in my opinion. I saw the Stallone one on sky at a similar time to Dredd's cinematic release and it goes for a more light hearted feel than the new film. It wasn't as good as I remembered it from my initial viewing many years ago.

Dredd 3D was better in the cinema, the "slo-mo" scenes worked really well in 3D on the big screen.

Yeah I must admit that it was the slo mo bits that I did not like.

I thought the new Dredd was MUCH better than the older one. Judge Dredd is supposed to have a serious, dark and gritty tone and the character is supposed to be a no bullshit knock-a-motherfecker-out-first-ask-questions-later sort of dude that DOESN'T remove his damn helmet. This was all incapsulated in Dredd. The old one pretty much broke all the rules of what makes the character and the world around him so interesting.

Comparing the two, in my opinion is like comparing The Dark Knight to Batman & Robin

I never read any of the Dredd comics, so did know know how he was supposed to be.
Now I can understand, why most people don't like the Stallone one.
Now I think I did the film a disservice and I will watch it again, thought different eyes.

I always liked Rogue Trooper but can't remember what he did. He just wandered about.

My mate called him Rog Trooper because he didn't know the word 'rogue'.

Tell me what to watch caftites. One out of these: The Hunt (Jagten), Beasts of the Southern Wild, Ganstersquad, Oblivion or The Place Beyond The Pines.

I was feeling a bit scifi-ish so I was leaning towards Oblivion unless it's completely shit and you can recommend me one of the others.

I watched Gangster squad and The Place beyond the Pines from those, neither of them were special, but I think the place beyond the Pines is better.

Gangster Squad is good fun, nothing special but you can turn your brain off and watch it.

Place beyond the pines is quite long and you have to invest yourself a minimum in the film, it's good (well I liked it) but it's not especially easy watching.

Oblivion is better than I expected, Cruise does his usual Cruise but it has some stunning visuals, and the story is okay. Not the best film ever but a decent sci-fi film I'd say.

Thanks guys, Oblivion it is then.

The Wolverine

I think every film franchise should have to set at least one movie in Japan. Spinny swordy flippy stuff is always good fun.

6/10

Oblivion was a pleasant surprise, Kosinski's first two films have both been big budget sci-fi movies and I've really enjoyed both, glad he's on for the Tron sequel.

I thought that Oblivion was excellent up until the point whereby the all-powerful alien uber-intellect was gazumped by Cruise's dumb switcheroo trick at the end.

V/H/S 2

This was a much better effort than the first V/H/S. Although I quite liked the first one, I thought it was waaaay too long and the segments were quite hit and miss. This one had a bit more consistency and the overall arc fitted in nicely, rather than being random like V/H/S. The segment 'Safe Haven' directed by Gareth Evans (The Raid) and Time Tiahjanto (Macabre) was absolutely brilliant and full of 'what the actual feck?!' moments. The entire film is about 30 mins shorter, which is definitely an improvement. Still, out of the 5 segments, 1 was brilliant, 1 was unique, 2 were decent and 1 was shite. Would recommend to horror enthusiasts 7.5/10

I wrote this back when I saw it at the pictures, but I would've wanted the film to end 15 minutes before it did, at the moment where you see them getting into the 'coffins' (can't remember EXACTLY how it happens as I saw it a while ago, but I remember being disappointed by the ending), leave it open ended and more mysterious (and poetic in a way). The whole going into the alien ship + the other cruise that comes accross her like 3 years later was a bit of a letdown.

Same here, I thought the new one was excellent and is exactly what we need from these re-makes, much darker like it should be. Karl Urban was an excellent choice and I really really hope they get another Dredd out, but given the box office numbers it probably won't.

Also same with Cider's take on Oblivion, I was enjoying it a lot up until the stupid ending.

Oh good to hear, I thought the first one was okay-ish (worth the watch for fans, but a bit too hit and miss to be really considered a good film) but definitely too long. I've got this one ready to watch but after being unconvinced by the first one, I wasn't sure if I would've watched it, you've convinced me too.

Do they try to do a main story (like in the first ones with the guys that go into the house, but that was pretty shitty and not well exploited) or just segment after segment?

Also, on a not really related note, I can't wait to go see The Conjuring, could be good, I love haunted house films! (not out until end of August in France)

I still can't get over how bad Only God Forgives was. It really is one of the worst "big" movies I've ever seen. At least half of that film was just Ryan Gosling either looking at something (sometimes himself in a mirror) in slow motion, or walking upto something in slow motion. I really didn't like Drive, but that seems like a masterclass in acting compared to this.

They do have a main story but unlike the first one, this one rounds itself off so it feels a little more complete rather than a placeholder as it did in the original V/H/S. I would definitely recommend a watch, the Safe Haven segment for me alone makes the film worth while and the Bike Rider segment is a very unique way of using the 'found footage' style filming. It's just a shame that the closing segment is not as good as the rest...

I have been counting down the days for The Conjuring for a while now! I always follow the films of James Wan, he is slowly becoming one of my favourite directors because he seems to have grasped the horror genre so well and seems as if he knows how to really push fear. It's out next week here in the UK so I'll be sure to write a review on it!

I agree about Wan, for horror I always look forward to his films, he's very good. Well I thought Saw (the original one) was great, but didn't like Dead Silence I have to say, which was underwhelming. Insidious was a really good film though, I wasn't a fan of all the second half of the film but it didn't make me not like the film as a whole, and I think all the first half of the film, the real haunted house part, was perfect, I saw it at the pictures and I was genuinely scared, which doesn't happen too often. Seeing the reviews and general reception of The Conjuring has gotten my hopes up pretty high, it better be good!

Did you see Sinister? That's another one of the haunted house genre that I really enjoyed in recent times, it had its flaws but it did make me pretty uncomfortable at the pictures I have to say.

I see what you mean by Death Sentence but I think he made that because he didnt want to become a genre specialist (after making Saw and Dead Silence), I wonder what he will do with Fast & Furious.... Insidious (until the final act) was one of my favourite horror films, it just had a strange, almost David Lynch like feel, as if the whole film was a nightmare sequence... absolutely brilliant, I hope Insidious 2 doesn't ruin it...

I didn't really like Sinister because (in the UK at least) there was too many showings of the films trailer and the trailer gave away so much of the scare scenes... Had I not seen the trailers, I think this could have become one of my favourite horror films of modern ages.

I haven't seen Death Sentence, I was talking about Dead Silence (but yeah, very similar titles  ), I wasn't a fan of that one.

That's a shame, I saw it without knowing too much about it and thought it was very atmospheric, really frightening. Real shame the trailers spoilered it for you.

The first two.
