Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

You're getting rather fixated on Rotten Tomatoes. I've mentioned them twice as a way of gauging general consensus.

EP3 has an 80% critic score, and a 56% Top critic average.

Rise has an 82% critic score, and a 100% Top critic score.

Metacritic & RT are the only place to find some kind of broad critical consensus, surely? Where else would you suggest?

And if you think Star Wars is cool to hate by the kind of people that actually click on internet sites, then I think you're woefully out of touch with the kind of people Star Wars fans are...Namely, the kind of people that click on things on internet sites. I'd guess far more people who thought it was a Shakespearean epic bother with that kind of thing than people who don't.

So basically you're blaming the fact that EP3 isn't hailed as a Shakespearean epic on the fact that it's really cool to hate Star Wars?

I dont blame anything. I fecking dont care, and again: i didnt say it was a "a Shakespearean epic ", but that the second half of it is amazing and has Shakespearean qualities.

Hero
The Fall
Days of Heaven
The Assassination of Jesse James
The Tree of Life
Road to Perdition

Some good ones.

I'd add Amelie and Delicatessen due to the colors.

The Fountain
Brazil

Tarsem Singh's (director of The Fall) first movie, The Cell, is also visually striking if a bit rubbish other wise.

Mockney, the vast majority of Star Wars fans waste no time in criticizing the prequels. Its gotten to the point where its considered "cool" and you're not really a true Star Wars fan if you don't hate the prequels.

I think Mockney's head will combust shortly.

Probably.

Great locations and all that...but I could've made that film look good.

Others?? er.. anything by the Coen Brothers.

Weird that you mention in. I saw it just last week. Didnt care for it much. The build up seemed to be leading to something so much bigger and convoluted and it fell flat after that.

I didn't mind it...I think it probably had more of an affect on people upon release. I'd say it was a decent thriller.

Mockney,

can I have an assignment for you? Would you watch City of the Lost Children for me and write a short review of it?

I'm truly curious whether you think its silly or great.

I've yet to see that film, as for Mockers, I don't think he'll like it, from what I've gathered...he doesn't like surrealism.

It's considered cool to hate them cos they're crap. If Star Wars fans don't like them, then what are people who think Star Wars is overrated era specific children's fare supposed to think of them?

I think Ep 3's better than Rise of the.....

Yeah, but you liked Heroes so...

Alright. I'm dow..purchasing it now. Subtitled or dubbed? (probably titled i assume, dubbed has a tendency to make things seem more silly. Let the Right One In was partially ruined for me by having the bully dubbed by a woman trying to do a little boy's voice)

No, I just don't like it when people act like children's films (or indeed any film) are more profound than they actually are just because they're surreal. That's pretentious..Spirited Away is one of the most overrated anime's of all time, infinitely inferior to Mononoke, Akira (& to a much lesser extent Paprika) which are all bat shit surreal, but good.

Would you say it was better than Deli and Amelie?

I loved Amelie, which is silly, surreal and purposefully odd. Brazil too. 2001 would be in my top 5 (maybe 10) and it's one of the most famously surreal films of all time.

Usually its the people who don't care for Star Wars who find the prequels to be average. I think all three are horrific and should be erased from existence. But that's because I'm so fond of the original trilogy.

Just saying your theory that Star Wars fanboys defend the prequels isn't correct.

Fwif I think Empire Strikes Back is a pretty good film. Certainly for pop cultural impact it's virtually unsurpassed. But it's not one of the greatest films ever made, and none of them are particularly Shakespearean. Though if you had to make a claim for any of them, it'd be that.

I loved the original trilogy too, and hated the fourth so much I couldn't even watch the other two

I think Spirited Away's brilliant, in fact, I can't think of a better animated film. If you're looking for something profound, I think you're missing the point, besides, I don't think it's ever had pretenses of profundity. It's a magical fairytale journey with a Alice in Wonderland theme...one that looks visually beautiful. I loved it.

Since when do most Stars Wars fans not admit that the prequels are awful? If anything they take finding the prequels to be awful to its nerdy extreme in taking them almost personally "George Lucas raped my childhood etc"

Forget direct. He should have got someone else to write the stuff.

The Rum Diary Johnny Depp as a 1960 New York journo who moves to Puerto Rico. Typical Hunter Thompson in that it's mostly about the ambience, and is ultimately disppointing. 5/10

The Help Set in Jackson in 1963, a satire about the racialist white society women and the way they treat their black helpers. Draws on some actual events like the murder of Medgar Evers. No doubt it will offend sensibilities on both sides of the racial divide, but it seemed like a nuanced film to me. 7/10
