The Princess Bride 8/10

Lovely film with Robin Wright as Princess Buttercup who is in love with her farm boy , Wesley ( Cary Elwes ) but as she thinks he is dead, she agrees to marry the Prince ( a wildly over the top performance from Chris Sarandon )
However the farm boy has been learning the ways of the world under the tutelage of Dread Pirate Roberts and initially rescues her from the clutches of Andre the Giant and Inigo Montoya who has vowed to avenge the death of his father at the hands of a six fingered man. After her true love has been left for dead by torture at the hands of Mel Smith ( as an albino ) Inigo learns the six fingered man is alive and knows the only man who can help defeat him is Wesley, so with the aid of Miracle Max ( a great cameo from Billy Crystal ) he brings him back to life to defeat the Prince.
Great fun

Oh that's on my list too...Probably in a couple of weeks though.

712, but it actually comes in at 740

Are we just ignoring that 100 movies prep thread now then?

Dunno, the problem is all discussions will naturally overlap. I suppose we should try our best to keep them to that thread. It could do with stickying, to be honest.

Blue Velvet 6/10

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Velvet_(film)

One hell of a fecking strange film, everyone in the film is bonkers for starters.
Starring (Dennis Hopper) being a cnut for 99.9% of the film, full with an oxygen mask and fake disguises.
Some College kid (Kyle MacLachlan) tries to play detective and breaks into a woman's (Isabella Rossellini) house, rather than stab the shit out of this college kid, said woman decides to have kinky violent sex with him instead all leading to an insane drug/conspiracy/cop plot filled with symbolism which eventually leads to Dennis Hopper dying for the 100th time.

One of my favourites as a child. "My Name is Inigo Montoya, you killed my father, prepare to die"

X-Men First Class 8/10

Superb acting by McAvoy and Fassbender

Wasn't cheesy, good acting, good script (well abit over the top on the US Russia stuff)

Overall quite a vintage for a superhero, and offers lots of perspective for the non xmen closet fan

Red State - A total and utter clusterfeck as Kevin Smith tries to do the Coens, Craven and Tarrantino and pretty much everything else in an hour and twenty minutes but somehow I still quite enjoyed the ride and Michael Parks is great as the disturbing preacher.

I actually enjoyed this. Totally unrecognisable as a Kevin Smith film.

As you say, Parks was very watchable and John Goodman is awesome in (Flintstones apart) everything he does.

The last 10-15 minutes were great, really suprising ending.

Drive - 8/10

Strong opening, superb soundtrack but I can't help feel the film juuuust missed hitting a home run. I wasn't convinced by the cast before I watched it but by the end I can't imagine anyone else playing the lead role.

Albert Brooks should do more movies.

Not a by the numbers action film which is refreshing, plently of lingering shots and some great acting without words. Might seem an odd comparison but it really reminded me of Lost in Translation at times. A lot of people won't like it simply because it won't be what they think it is going in. I think the film lost something just over half way but maybe I just need a second viewing.

But yeah I'm buying the soundtrack for this one.

Watched it last night and pretty much agree with that.

Lot's of slo-mo's, longing gazes, ambient music etc... punctuated with lashings of (at times) quite extreme violence.

I won't say it wasn't an enjoyable watch but it wasn't the second coming of Christ either.

The Road 8/10

I'm sure this has been reviewed here before but I watched this a couple of nights ago and it's stayed with me; the mark of a good film. Obviously the credit must go to the author because it's very true to a cracking story. I think what makes it so harrowing is that there are no monsters, no aliens. It's horrifying because it's humans pushed to their most animal, basic needs. I can believe that some people would be so desperate to survive they'd turn to cannibalism.

I'm not a film connoisseur but I'm usually disappointed when I watch film adaptations of books I've read but I certainly wasn't with this movie. Obviously the story had to be condensed and there was a small amount of artistic license at the end but all in all I think it was well acted and well produced.
I remember, whilst reading the book, the level of relief that I felt for the father and son whenever they found food/shelter was probably only marginally less than I would have felt if I was in that situation personally.

Brilliant novel. The movie was good but was never going to have the same impact.

Struggled with the accent though. A bit germanic in places, posh English in others then at the end went all Irish. Also, it was cheesy. That last shot of him in the film was as cheesy as can be and only made sense if you were a big fan of the original Jack Kirby comic art. Being a bit of a comic geek, I enjoyed it in the main though.

I've only just found out that his brother is Bob Einstein (Marty Funkhouser in Curb Your Enthusiasm) and his birth-name is Albert Einstein. Unless someone's having a laugh on Wikipedia...

Ha yeah I remember reading that on IMDB a few days back as well

Which was the other? Waht did you think of them?

The Sting. I started to watch the Network, but the copy that I had 'acquired' stopped about half way through, so whilst I was acquiring a new copy I watched The Sting. I loved The Sting, thought it was great and really liked Redford in it. Have to admit I struggled more with Network, I thought it started slowly which is why it took me so long to watch the rest of it. But that said- the second half was great and the script writing was very, very good.

I think I reviewed it when I was in the newbies, but since it's just come out on Netflix, I'll give a 10/10 review for 'Pelada'. It's a documentary filmed by a couple who were high level university footballers in the US who didn't make it as professionals, so they traveled the world playing in pickup games and learning about football's cultural significance on a global scale. Give it a watch if you have a Netflix account.

That's great. I'll give you when you're done with all 4 if you want.

What did you think of the guy's acting in Network?

I think I reviewed it when I was in the newbies, but since it's just come out on Netflix, I'll give a 10/10 review for 'Pelada'. It's a documentary filmed by a couple who were high level university footballers in the US who didn't make it as professionals, so they traveled the world playing in pickup games and learning about football's cultural significance on a global scale. Give it a watch if you have a Netflix account.

YES! Saw it in the theater a couple of years ago and have been bugging all my footy friends since then. Just came onto Netflix a couple of weeks back and I've just had a pack of my teammates over to watch it. Every man jack of them loved it (2 Mexicans, a Peruvian, German, 2 Brits, Nigerian, New Zealander and a Frenchman). The gal's narration can be a bit plodding, but the unexceptional nature of the kids just highlights the remarkable stuff they were doing. The guy is a likeable enough goof. Tidy players as well.

Great movie except for the bit where I realized I've wasted my life.

I really liked Drive. Some beautiful shots, lots of silences and small bursts of extreme violence. I didn't think the film lost something over half way, as everything began unravelling and he was forced into dealing with certain situations, I thought it all came together quite well.

Yeah like I said maybe it needs a second viewing but I felt just the way it got resolved and how he got there, I dunno seemed a bit easy when the rest of the film up to that point was doing something very different.

Funny Games

Taking the advice to watch a crap movie, I went for the US remake of a not-so-great original. Haneke directing it again. Tim Roth's generally entertaining, Naomi Watts isn't bad to look at and was very good in one my favourite movies in Mulholland Drive, and Michael Pitt's been good in Boardwalk so as far as crap movies go I thought this couldn't have been too bad.

And it wasn't. It was ok. It was basically soft-core torture porn though, even if it was an ironic take on the obsession with torture porn (which was amusing at times, to be fair), with a ridiculous accent from Tim Roth and Naomi Watts was a bit crap. Despite that it was really well shot and paced, I thought...which was a strange mix. Content-wise it wasn't good, performances-wise it wasn't good but it was well made. It wasn't close to an enjoyable watch though, nor was it intended to be. I can see why people like Haneke but he doesn't really do it for me.

Warrior - 8/10

Its like a modern Rocky but with MMA instead of boxing, and two Balboa characters instead of one. Awesome film, predictable but the actors all do such a good job it doesn't matter and I was genuinely rooting for one of the characters at the end. Nice music too.

Went to watch Tinker Tailor yesterday, cinema was pretty empty so that was nice and peaceful. But yeah, it was a strong film, supremely acted, even from some of the British TV actors that I was like "wtf are they there for?". But the main core of them all were terrific, no true standout over another so who they push for supporting categories is going to be tough. You gotta remember though, the story itself is quite old, and sometimes does feel it as some of it is kinda obvious, but Alfredsson does a very good with it anyway, you can see his style all over this.

This sounds really interesting. Anyone have a download link?

Inherit the Wind - Very good court drama based on a true story about a teacher who broke the law by teaching evolution in class. Two high profile lawyers are then faced against each other in court.

I can see why people like Haneke but he doesn't really do it for me.
Well he's hit-and-miss. 'The Piano Teacher' is top 20 stuff, 'Code Unknown' is tremendous. 'Funny Games' is crap and 'Time of the Wolf' is a waste of talent.
