Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Pandorum

Not bad, Its reminds me of Event horizon crossed with Descent. Hoping they do a sequel as the ending give it a lot of potential to take the story in another direction.

the Imaginarium of Doctor Parnasuss has been getting great early reviews. Some even saying it's Gilliams best yet. Until the finalised reviews are out by the middle of this month we won't know for sure.

Has anyone seen Pixar's Up it got released in the US ages ago out in a few days here.

Eagerly awaiting. My friends and family in the states claim it's the best Pixar have made yet so that gives me a good feeling for this film.

Assassination Of A High School President

think the story was good , it had something different from other high school movies
boring in some parts though
5.5/10

The Invention of Lying. If it wasn't for Ricky Gervaise, this movie would barely be worth watching. Gervais does a very good job in this very forgettable film. There's about 10 minutes of funny stuff, 90 minutes of tedious stuff.

There is no way it could be that good

I had high expectations for this one but I was left a tad underwhelmed by it in the end. It is visually appealing and the animation is as good as anything Pixar has done but the story and the jokes aren't what I expected. The jojes are lame and repeated ad nauseum. There is a brilliant montage in the beginning of the movie that is quite emotional and well done. Worth a watch but definitely not in the top draw of Pixars work.

Bruno - 7.5 /10

Sacha Baron Cohen has got balls, in more ways than one. Lots of real, unscripted scenes, the last one in the cage is absolute classic. I thought the pace was much better than Borat as well, it seemed like Cohen has better understanding of how to 'work' the Americans.

The Girlfriend Experience. Steven Soderbergh returns to his low budget indie roots in this movie about an escort. While I do like Soderbergh's movies, this one just didn't do it for me. I found myself checking how much time was left more than a few times. Impressive that they shot it in 5 days I think it was, so I'll give them that.

visioneers --- give me my life back

Heard it stars that pornstar Sasha Grey? Pure filth, she is. Has to be a cokehead

I thought it's funny parts were absolutely hilarious watched it stoned back in July and hadnt been stoned in a good while and was literally falling out of my seat crying at some of the shit that was going on.

Didnt like it all. A few funny parts but the rest is just meh. I dont understand all the stuff about showing his cock, what exactly is funny about that?

Broken Embraces. Penelope Cruz is stunning, mesmeric, spellbinding. the rest of the film's not bad either.

That was just one scene. Watch carefully the reactions of the two guys sitting next to Bruno just after Harrison Ford tells him to f-off, they're like laughing and then their expressions suddenly turn grave when the cock comes on, genius! The funny things about the movie is by far the reactions of the people around them. Like when the gay converter preacher gets all passionate telling him how he can be famous by convincing other homosexuals to turn straight, and Bruno asks if he's coming on to him, cuz he sounded hot... the guy's face is priceless.

What's Eating Gilbert Grape and Don Juan de Marco. 8/10

Gilbert Grape is brilliant. Di Caprio's acting is superb, all other actors are very good as well. A bit annoyed by Juliette Lewis, reminded me too much on her character in Kalifornia. Good, lovable story.

Don Juan- Johnny Depp's accent was very good. Very positive atmosphere, funny and romantic. I had some trouble understanding Marlon Brando's lines, though.

Has anyone seen The Boat That Rocked? That Richard Curtis film that released a while back. Any good?

Matrix Reloaded is on iTV 2 now....It's the most dire piece of cum stained mouldy crumpet crumbs I've ever seen. ...Oh, hold on, Keanu is about to bring Bondage babe back to life....Oh Christ this is terrible

Looking for Eric For once there is a reasonably uplifting Loach film and LFE is none the worse for it. Great performances all round make this a great film for everyone but the wonderful use of Cantona as a muse is brilliant, funny and touching in turns. 9/10 and only slightly less if you don't know Manchester or aren't a United fan.

Sikandar
Indian film about about a boy that finds a gun in Kashmir and how that changes his life. The first part of the film was pretty good but as the movie continued there were many holes in it. The acting was for the most parts solid.
I don't know if the film was actually shot in Kashmir but whatever the location was it was very beautiful and the cinematography was pretty good.

Reloaded was decent I thought, Revolutions was the one that was shit

Vertigo - About time I watched this one. It was very good but I thought the twist kinda ruined it, got a bit tedious after that and things like the hotel scene remained unexplained. - 7,7/10

Fallen Angels - A lovely movie, stylish and captivating. There's something spellbindingly about it that made me really like it. - 8/10

Yeah loved Fallen Angels too.

Some films I've seen recently..

As some people I know (and usually trust) really seem to love it, I saw Rules of Attraction expecting it to be a good film so bare with me as I feel the need to vent.

The good. Quite nice presentation. Cool score, loved a cheesy German hip-hop track in there that was just hilarious. Shot well.

The awful. If there's some point to or theme to this film at all I guess the whole film is some sort of exaggerated critique of today's youth culture or whatever, but it just left me depressed and I can't say I enjoyed watching it. At all. There's no real structure and though some of the dialogue and random details in the film are quite clever, I just felt like.. what's the point? It's just fluff if there's no decent story to tell. A bit like a slightly more sophisticated Larry Clark film that still survives on shock value alone.

That pointless Dick character who just appears briefly towards the end really takes the cake though. He's just awful. That whole bizarro Scarface scene is just fecking terrible and goes nowhere. I like Bret Eason Ellis stories usually, but this one did nothing for me. Bloody film buffs.

State of Play

Decent thriller. The story is very good but it's tediously formulaic in places, but that's to be expected. "Let's get a decent love triangle in there" "Let's get a rookie female character that fights her way up in a tough world". And what was the deal with his low-tech black and white screen computer  Nice Saab too. That's seriously going to far to prove a point.

Entertaining movie nonetheless.

Beautiful Girls.

Beautiful film. Absolutely loved it. Great dialogue and well acted. Can't believe Scott Rosenberg, the guy who wrote this film, also wrote dross like Gone in 60 seconds, Con Air and Armageddon.

It amused me.

Oh and Inglorious Basterds wasn't all that it's made out to be by most people. Some clever dialogue as usual, but I can't say I really loved it. What I did love though was the scene where he uses David Bowie's 'Cat People'. That was a great moment as I'm a huge Bowie fan.

Absolutely worth watching but no Pulp Fiction.

Public Enemies

First of all if you're not a fan of Michael Mann then I imagine you'll not get much out of this, so give it a miss.

As a fan of Mann I can say this wasn't one of his best. Sure, all the ingredients were there - gorgeous cinematography, gunfights that leave your ears ringing, cops vs crims, poorly written female parts but there was just something missing that left the whole thing rather cold.

Depp showed good charisma in the lead, Bale was Bale and it had a cracking beginning but it just didn't grip me in any way. The same themes were covered in Heat to greater effect and aside from Depp, none of the characters were particularly involving. I enjoyed it enough but in the canon of Mann it was more Michael Mainstream than Deep Heat.
