Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Romance and Cigarettes.

Very strange film. All star cast with loads of folks from the Sopranos, Kate Winslet, Christopher Walken...but it's a musical. But it's not your average musical. It's just very "WTF is going on" at first but as the film goes on and you start to know the characters better it's really quite funny and moving. Very enjoyable in the end. Not what I expected at all.

7.5/10

The Unborn

This film cost me 2 hours of my life that i'll never get back, I saw a trailer and thought it looked promising - never has a trailer been more deceptive! An absolute waste of a film - only slightly saved by the lead female being quite fit. There's nothing positive for me to say about this film other than that - don't waste your time.

1/10

Made in USA. Been wanting to get my hands on this one for years and finally was able to. Unfortunately I was immensely tired and couldn't pay as much attention to it as I would have liked. Typical Godard I would say. Would need to watch it again to get a better view on it, but it was good from what I saw.

the lives of others - fantastic movie, especially for the ones that have been under socialism/communism at some point in time

Saw this. It was good fun but rather clunky as a film. Personally I would have preferred to just have the actors singing - regardless of how good they were, without the recording playing over the top. It had some good lines though.

The line ""Somebody cuts my dick, it better be for vengeance" is poetry.

Agree with all that. Though Tony Soprano's singing wasn't exactly brilliant was it?

Shiner. It's got everything a gangster movie should have: gangsters, cops, boxing, guns, yet it doesn't really stand out in my opinion. It's interesting to see Michael Caine not being the man on top like he's been so many times. Worth a watch.

I really liked Watchmen. Long but I got into it so time didnt seem to drag I suppose.

Thought the story line was very clever and fitted well, and you felt like you get to know each character just well enough.

O and the latex bird was class. Not her really, but the costume.. O yes,

I was shocked with how fine Ackerman was in that movie, the dark here suits her well

I felt the same way, really liked the movie. Thought it was well writen and for the most part the acting was good but that kid was so dull and hapless - theres a scene where hes trapped in the basement and hes screaming for Clint to let him out and i really thought he ruined the scene as it should have been something more powerful but it was let down by the kid.

Good movie though i'd recommend it to anyone

Just seen it and agree with all that. Really enjoyed it, one of the best films i've seen in the cinema in a while.

I don't really know... When I think about it, it seems like it was a deep, character driven piece of art. But when I was watching it, I thought it was boring. The old Michael was annoying, suicide predictable ,...

At least there was naked Winslet in it.

The Damned United.

A film of David Peace’s novel about Brian Clough’s 44 days at Leeds, which is one of the best British novels of this century. Wisely the movie doesn’t try and take on the whole multi-layered book but takes a limited slice through it and comes up with a very fine result which will extend its appeal beyond the football fan.

Sheen is fantastic as Clough, and the brown tones and ancient football of a long ago 70s are cleverly captured. Apparently some of the more critical passages about Johnny Giles have been removed from the book after a threat of legal action, and his role is played down here. A few minor bloopers intrude, like Colin Todd being weighed up as a midfielder and Dave Mackay still playing for Derby when he’d actually retired, but these are minor quibbles.

There is also slight feeling that Sheen and Spall (Peter Taylor) are rather more charming screen presences that the real prickly Clough and touchy Taylor. Colm Meaney is superb as Don Revie, so good in fact, that when Revie himself appears in archive footage towards the end your first thought is ‘that’s not Revie’. Highly recommended (but read the book first).
