Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Barbarian

Went into this only knowing the bare bones synopsis and tbh that's probably a large part of why I enjoyed this so much. I can't even liken it to a certain film without spoiling it. Suffice to say if you like horrors/thrillers then stick it on your list and don't read anything beforehand. @Dirty Schwein - let me know what you think.
I am desperate to watch this but it's my daughter bday this weekend and next week I'm in a massive campaign at work... I hope it's still in the cinema the week after. Really really want to see this.

Mulholland Dr.

Dunno why I've never got through this before (outside the intro credits being too off the wall for me), having watched it yesterday I think I made it to the audition in an office scene in the past. Naomi Watts was excellent (apart from the opening, which was far too much into the hammy direction IMO, but overall the film was a good bit better than OK: I was straight on Wikipedia after to see what I was supposed to think. Going to watch it again for sure to (hopefully) spot things I've missed*

The Silencio scene was a highlight, especially 'cos I'd forgotten everything the compere had said by the time she was half-way through the song so was caught off guard.

*Too many loose ends at the moment knock a point or a half off, but...

8/10

The Radiohead of movies. I understood how great it was. Did not enjoy it at all really.

+1 for Barbarian.
Probably not a classic but close enough to be worth a watch

Recently rewatched this absolute classic for about the 5th or 6th time and I still absolutely adore everything about it. It's a genuine masterpiece which goes under the radar massively in the horror film genre.

Based on a short story by Stephen King for those who don't know anything about it or haven't seen it and stars John Cusack and Samuel L Jackson. Its a psychological thriller which mainly deals with grief with a nice dose of the supernatural thrown in for good measure. A very intelligent horror film and might be one of the best I have seen. I just wish they made more films like this.

9/10.

Banshees of Inisheran or whatever

Irish cinema has really taken a nosedive these past 10 years. Hasnt been a good movie since the Guard. And even that was only ok.

What a shite movie. Boring story, boring dialogue and a shite ending. Such a stupid waste of time.

I just discovered that the writer/director of this, In Bruges, Seven Psychopaths, etc. has been banging Phoebe Waller-Bridge since 2018. If they don't co-write a film or a TV show or something I'm going to be livid.

The Banshees of Inisherin.

Absolutely loved this. Fantastic performances from all the main actors. Colin Farrell and Barry Keoghan are the stand outs. Very funny but also incredibly dark at times.

8.5/10

I just watched In Bruges again tonight. Still think that's the best thing Farrell has ever done. The scene where he breaks down in the park after nearly killing himself genuinely chokes me up. I think if he wins an award for this I wouldn't begrudge him it but it would whiff off DiCaprio Revenant vibes for me.

I too recently rewatched it - it's great, one of my faves - and discovered there's two completely different endings. I'd forgotten that the disc has a director's cut (which I'd watched the first times presumably) and the iTunes version has only I assume the theatrical cut. At the time, I thought I was going mad, but if you've only seen one it's worth checking out the other. I think today I prefer the iTunes version.

It’s a very good movie. Alternative title should be ‘World’s hardest escape room’.

Those movies are great. What the hell were they thinking with this. All the other reviews on here that are praising it are paid off. They have to be .

Yeah the ending where he hears his daughters voice on the dictaphone and his wife hears it too is my favourite. Very chilling.

Skyscraper

Dwayne Johnson being Dwayne Johnson, but good CGI and a decent enough take on the fire in a tall building disaster movie/evil genius plot with only one or two moments of incredulity. I'd not watched it for a while and had forgotten how bombastic the soundtrack is: it's definitely one to piss the neighbours off with.

After Midnight

A low budget, well-acted hour and 20 minutes or so, of which an hour and 10 is just about worth watching. I don't know, it feels like they had a bundle of scripts and mashed them together and yet it almost works. Basically a guy is left by his girlfriend, and appears to lose the plot. A big negative for me is that sometimes things are better left to the viewer's imagination (not talking about FX work, it's low budget and is what it is) and the first 90% of its runtime does that well enough. I'd have rather it turned out to be him going mad or her being a shapeshifter as is mentioned as a possibility than the denouement they went for. It'd've been a better film for it.

Things Heard & Seen
A couple move into a secluded new house for the husband's career and then their lives unravel as the husband's dark secrets appear alongside the terrors that took place in the house years prior. Well acted (really liking this James Norton dude, seen him in a few good roles recently) and it was all shot well with a decent atmosphere. But the story was a bit conventional and felt like it needed to try to dig more into the friction between the two leads. I did like the left turn it took in the finale though. Decent but had potential to be much better. Think the supernatural element actually held the movie back 5.5/10

Could be that. Or could be you've just got poor taste. Just saying like.
Maybe. But there's nothing entertaining about this movie. The dialogue was bad. Tried to do the that moment from Bruges about the cnut kids twice, but it's not nearly as well done. Story was just stupid, tired of these "day in the life" stuff tbh. There was maybe 2 funny parts in the whole movie and they were both with Brendan and the priest. Collin acted well and also the young lad, can't remember his name. Popular actor nowadays. And the ending I was like "ok? What now?". I KNOW irish cinema is capable of actually making a great movie. But this ain't it.

Aaron you have such awful taste in movies and tv.

The Northman
Technically, amazing. Looked fantastic, good performances, sounded great. lots of action and violence that felt like it meant something. But my big issue was the audio levels of the dialogue. Everything was mumbled or whispered and I could barely hear anything and had to keep rewinding the movie to keep up. Became really frustrated by that and it spoiled the film for me massively 5/10

What rating would you have given it if you didn't have hearing issues?

Saw this and actually jumped out of my seat when the jumpscare happened. And then again a 2nd time soon after:lol:. That has never happened before. Surprisingly good movie.

The Thing

Popped a few diazepam pills before going to watch this at the cinema and yeah those helicopter shots are really something. Anyways it's gross as feck, it's filled with atmosphere and still brilliant. Carpenter will always be the master of horror.

The Infiltrator

A true story about a customs official who infiltrates an arm of the Escobar empire undercover. My then girlfriend who was the director of concierges at a well known hotel on St. Pete Beach got to run the green room for Bryan Cranston who plays the lead. Really cool guy, she said.

Story stays pretty true to reality. Didn’tbro that well in the theaters but received good critical reviews. A quality watch for those who are into true crime movies.

I assume a few points higher. Have you seen it? What were your thoughts?
I was just being a dick

But yeah I saw it, this is what I said about it at the time:
Thought it was extraordinary. Amazingly well done epic, with great performances all around and sublime cinematography. Also feels like a film that will age extremely well.
One of the best films of the year hands down for me.

I was talking to my mate and he also had issues with the audio/dialogue levels. I think it was mixed with a cinema Dolby setup in mind so probably those who watched it at the cinema enjoyed it more. I might give it another go with headphones on the future because it was fun in all honesty. Made me want to constantly shout after watching it

Yeah I saw it at the cinema and don't remember any issues with the sound design. If anything, I remember it being one of the strong parts of the film.

Dashcam
An American vlogger visiting London has the night from hell when she agrees to drive a sick woman to a hidden location. This has all the ingredients to be a really fun "found footage" style movie. Gore, suspense, eerieness etc but the main character was so fecking unlikeable and obnoxious that is really hard to want anything else beyond watching her die a horrible death.

Not sure why they made her such a douche bag, it really ruins the film and seems to be the complaint from just critic reviews too. The actress is playing herself (she's an actual vlogger)... What were they thinking?

Also, the characterization makes no sense. Like she goes through so much torment, barely escapes a situation with her life against a demon... Then instantly proceeds to start making jokes. Then she narrowly escaped being chased by a killer and enters a house for shelter and instantly starts making jokes.

This could result have been a 6 or 7 but because of the protagonist, I can only (being generous) give it a 4/10

Lone Survivor

LTTP and everything, and I don't know how I've never watched this as have owned it for a long time. Probably the most visceral war film I've watched in a while if not ever, and whatever questions it raises (depictions of Afghanis, etc) I thought it handled the story well. All the roles were believable, the use of subtitles kept to a minimum (knife/duck is funny), the sound and acting really good and it felt as real as I guess a film can get.

Probably considering everything going on right now, this hit harder than I thought it would and it really exposed the insanity of war to me. Enjoyed is the wrong word, but I did. Great film.
