Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Decision to Leave (2022)

Caught this at the cinema earlier. It's the new film from Park Chan-wook (Oldboy, Joint Security Area, The Handmaiden, etc).

It's ostensibly a crime drama but also a romance thriller, something of a melange of genres that suits the film's constantly mysterious style. I made a mental note to say it combines the obsessiveness of detective work with the abstraction of personal attraction, but for the life of me I can't figure out a way to word this without sounding like a pretentious twit. What I can say though is that the set design is absolutely gorgeous. Chan-wook is always hugely underrated in this category.

It's the sort of film where, at first, you'll want to figure out whodunnit but then later realise whodunnit isn't important because solutions to problems are secondary to the plight of human existence - a conundrum you can't really "solve". The type of movie for people who enjoy their dramas deep and the journey as the destination.

4/5
Been wanting to see this, glad to see you enjoyed it. Sounds great.

Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile - 0/5

I thought flicks for kids usually had some redeeming element for adults? This was pure, unadulterated ass. Difficult to sit through. None of the kids in the cinema I was at were doing things you'd expect kids to do, like laughing or dancing. I'm imagining they were as offended as I was. Avoid at all costs.

Ah thanks for this. My son really wants to go to the cinema this week during half term. Maybe I’ll just take him to see black Adam. There’s literally no new kids movies!

Black Adam

It was OK, nothing spectacular. Takes a long time to get going and I don't feel like I got anything from it which I hadn't already got from multiple other DC or Marvel movies.

I didn't feel like there were any standout performances but because it has been released in the same year as Morbius and Thor L&T, which were frankly awful it felt like a 6/10.

The Banshees of Inisherin

Really enjoyed this, equal parts funny, interesting, sad and in awe at the stunning setting of the film.

The 4 main actors (Farrell, Gleeson, Condon and Keoghan) are all fantastic and have real chemistry, and I love the barmy nature of the plot.

Something I'd definitely recommend and would 100% go and see again, easy 8/10.

The Lost King

This was better than I thought it would be, really interesting story and I think that Sally Hawkins does a fantastic job of portraying Philippa Langley and her struggles to get people on board with her efforts to dig up Richard III.

An incredibly smart woman it has to be said and I think the film really does her story justice, 7.5/10.

You're either Halle Berry, Patrick Wilson, or Roland Emmerich.
Halloween Ends

Was that really what they came up with for the last film in what is maybe the greatest horror franchise in history.
It was dreadful, the worst out of the whole lot.
It was no Halloween film, it was more like a romance with some Halloween elements thrown in.
Massive let down.

2/10
I've not read one good review of this.

Me Time
Kevin Hart gets to spend a weekend away from his kids and wife and parties it up with his best friend Mark Wahlberg in wild fashion. I like Kevin Hart and Marky Mark is decent in comedy roles. The movie had its funny moments but with these two actors and the premise, it needed more than low grade humour to stand out from the pack. It's pretty average 5/10

The greatest horror franchise in history only contains one good movie. Which hasn't aged particularly well due to being copied a billion times.
Everything past the first film ranged from forgettable mediocrity to total shit.

Yeah, Nightmare on Elm Street & Child’s Play at least have some weird interesting meta-sequels… 80%+ of the Halloween ‘franchise’ is straight garbage. And boring straight garbage at that. feck, even Scream has a respectable hit rate.

He probably meant like it was the grandaddy of horror franchising as opposed to being the actual best horror franchise.

I'm sure hes right. I just never really understood it. Kind of mystified why they're still being made.
Jaime Lee Curtis is quite cool i guess.

I've never been a fan of slashers or Halloween as a franchise personally. Texas Chainsaw and the first Scream were the only slashers I enjoyed. Oh and Nightmare On Elm Street if that is considered in the same sub genre.

Halloween 3 is a great film

Forgot about that one
Wasn't it aliens taking over with hypnotic chocolate or something crazy?

I take it back, horray for the holloween franchise.

Yeah not a huge fan of slashers either. Particularly the more grounded ones.

If I remember correctly the bad guy sells a pumpkin mask that melts people heads when a certain advert plays on tv and Stonehenge pops up for some reason. It’s mad but a lot of fun.

Is anybody going to watch the new Park Chan-wook movie?

i saw it, it’s a good 7/10 movie but not up there with his best, for me

But I did enjoy it and probably out of all his films the Hitchcock influence shines through the most, it had a slick noir-like tone running through it..

For sure. I liked it more than The Handmaiden but not as much as Oldboy and Joint Security Area (criminally underrated film that).

Halloween, Halloween III: Season of the Witch, Halloween H20, Halloween (2018), and Halloween Kills are all bangers. Nightmare on Elm Street had some absolute classics like the first film, Dream Warriors, and New Nightmare, but I find them less watchable as they are completely batshit mental and garish (at least with Dream Warriors and New Nightmare). There's something oddly relaxing about Michael Myers relentless metronomic pursuit.

Resolution
Two blokes in a wooden house, one a crack addict, his mate trying to help him kick it. Strange stuff happens. 7/10

The Endless

Set in the same universe as Resolution. Wooden house, crack addict and mate make a cameo. Strange stuff happens. 7.5/10

They're both pretty good, low-budget timeloopy sci-fi if you like that kinda thing. Hadn't watched 'em for a while, but The Endless popped up on iTunes for me so I dug them out again. I can't decide if you should watch Resolution before, after or halfway through The Endless.

Taxi Driver
Decided to revisit this classic. Love it. Such a good performance and direction. Might actually go back and watch all the classics. Trying to get my wife into them but her comment after the movie was "I preferred yesterday's movie" which was Me Time starring Kevin Hart & Marky Mark. I think I married the wrong woman  Anyways... Brilliant film 8/10

While I never really care about reviews, this has 6% on RT! Tbh it could be worse, I went to see a special screening of Dr StrangeLove with a family member and 20 minutes into the film I turn to ask them their opinion and........yep they are fast asleep.

Imo Scorsese best stuff for starters is his documentaries - Italianamerican and American Boy(Both free on youtube interested).

I'm gonna try show her Donnie Brascoe next. I think that's a nice entry style movie. Very well made but also has a more straight forward plot. Plus Johnny Depp. But tonight, I gotta sit through whatever tripe she chooses

Fair point, first 2 are decent. 3rd one is better if you think of it, not in the Halloween franchise.

The Endless is especially good. Real Lovecraft vibe to it.
Edit: By which I mean cosmic horror not appalling racism.

Great movies. Synchronic is decent too. I never saw Spring, but I've just googled it and it's on Amazon for free even if you don't have a Prime account. Might check it out tonight. https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/video/detail/B0872HC16X/ref=atv_dp_share_cu_r

I liked spring
I feel like i'd be spoiling it by saying anything about it but its quite unique.

A romantic comedy where one of the love interests is a horrifying monster

I felt a couple of the 'trips' were too far in Synchronic, which in a way is completely irrational considering the premise of the film, but I thought it was alright it at the time. I only watched it the once, so: Is he definitely time-travelling, or literally tripping?

I've never got around to Spring (although am familiar with the plot). I've seen it get mentioned whenever Benson / Moorhead films pop up but normally with polar reviews so hadn't bothered to watch, but I'll give it a go.

Edit: Spring is 1.99 on iTunes, if you don't have access to Prime, or have an aversion to free streaming like me.

If she chooses a Marvel film, you should invite @Sweet Square to join you guys.

She's seen them all so no, that didn't get picked. She picked some random horror called The Accursed (which I'm ok with watching) but my daughter woke up in the other room and was struggling to sleep so we didn't actually get to really watch anything.

Banshees of Ed Sheeran

Really enjoyed this. Don't go in expecting laugh out loud funny like 'In Bruges' though. It's definitely a more thoughtful meditation on friendships, small town (island) life and growing old. Performances all round are great with Kerry Condon and Barry Keoghan stealing the show for me. You've seen those performances from Gleeson and Farrell before as good as they both are. Also, the animals. I think one of the funniest scenes was just a shot of a cow staring in through a window. Brilliant.

Edit: I think it's gonna be one of those films that stays with you as well. Can't stop thinking about it today.

When I was watching it I was trying to think where I recognised Kerry Condon from but didn't realise until afterwards that it's from Better Call Saul. She was really good in this. It was the same with Barry Keoghan and I couldn't remember where I'd seen him before. Turns out it was in Dunkirk.

That scene with the cow made me laugh too

That's probably the only thing I've seen him in where he isn't playing some kind of "weirdo" in all honesty. I was quite sympathetic to him in this. His Dad was a proper prick.

Emily the Criminal

An adequate 90-minuter. Acting is fairly solid throughout, especially the lead, the story is OK but occasionally a little unrealistic. Not really important, but the film doesn't say when it's set, though I'd guess 10-15 years ago or something like that. I couldn't date it via the cars etc, but she was buying plasma TVs at one point* - it's just if it was set 'now' I don't think the story'd work so well, although I'm not Drawfull the Criminal, so yeah.

*flip phones and iPhone 11/12/13s so God knows

6.5/10 (a 7 at a push)

Mulholland Dr.

Dunno why I've never got through this before (outside the intro credits being too off the wall for me), having watched it yesterday I think I made it to the audition in an office scene in the past. Naomi Watts was excellent (apart from the opening, which was far too much into the hammy direction IMO, but overall the film was a good bit better than OK: I was straight on Wikipedia after to see what I was supposed to think. Going to watch it again for sure to (hopefully) spot things I've missed*

The Silencio scene was a highlight, especially 'cos I'd forgotten everything the compere had said by the time she was half-way through the song so was caught off guard.

*Too many loose ends at the moment knock a point or a half off, but...

8/10

Barbarian

Went into this only knowing the bare bones synopsis and tbh that's probably a large part of why I enjoyed this so much. I can't even liken it to a certain film without spoiling it. Suffice to say if you like horrors/thrillers then stick it on your list and don't read anything beforehand. @Dirty Schwein - let me know what you think.
