Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Did I review Everything, Everywhere all at once? I'd give it a 10/10 too if not. No idea what to say about it outside its very funny.

I don't know if it's actually a 10/10, probably not. But i see so much mediocre crap at the cinema (I saw Jurassic World the day before and my god it was horrendous) that just watching a film that was different and fun and interesting probably bumps it up a couple of points.

Hustle

Yeah all the story beats are predictable but that's what you want in a feelgood movie right. Adam Sandler is great in what is basically the basketball Rocky (well actually more Creed considering Rocky was retired). Really enjoyed it and has to be the best movie Netflix have put out surely?

What We Do In The Shadows - excellent Taika Waititi mockumentary about four vampires flat sharing and the random hijinks they get up to over the course of a few months. 7/10

I loved that movie so much. Laughing like a drain throughout. I was never able to get into the TV series follow-up though. Not sure why.
That’s on my to watch list next but I’ve heard it misses it’s mark. Strange considering Kayvan Novak and Matt Berry are in and generally are top comedic actors.

It was basic to be fair. Been there done that even the flow and acting seems copycat.

Good movie dont get me wrong but best on netflix?

Probably the fact that adam played an ok character seems to be adding to the rating because we all know he was horrid in comedy.

I enjoy it by the way. Like you said feels good. But creed is better

Not the best on Netflix, the best they've produced. Haven't seen Power of the Dog mind.

Adam Sandler has always been a good actor. If people only know him from his 'comedy' movies that says more about them.

Heard from who? It's received pretty much universal critical acclaim. I much prefer it to the film.

My friend who recommended the movie and has seen the tv show. I’m still going to watch it regardless.

Yeah, exactly. Might be just me though. I know it’s gone down quite well in general.

There was something about the kiwi accent which made the dead pan humour in the movie so funny to me. Which got lost with the new characters in the TV series. I was a massive Flight of the Concords fan, mind you.

The Lives of Others

As a german that was born in West Germany in 1987 this movie was far too long on my "movies I have to watch" list.

It really feels surreal that such a cruel system was in place not that long ago and just around the corner.

The story was great, as were the actors. It's a slow paced movie driven by its narrative and the dialogs. So anyone expecting Hollywood-esque action scenes might be disappointed.
But for anyone that wants a good impression (at least as far as I can tell everything pictured is very close to reality) about the life in the GDR should watch this movie.

9/10, easily one of the best german movies, if not the best

Quality flick.

Great Movie. Sandler churns out a lot of shite and Netflix got a lot of flak for his huge deal. Hustle, and Uncut Gems are great movies though. Probably worth the deal on their own.

Spiderhead 8/10
Not special, but does what it’s trying to do exceptionally well. A saggy middle and they could have taken more from the source material relating to the drugs. But it was solid as a whole thing.

The Grand Budapest Hotel

I don't really like Wes Anderson movies. I like how Wes Anderson movies look but that's about it. So I've only watched The Darjeeling Limited and The Royal Tenenbaums, and had to force my way through Fantastic Mr Fox because the kids love it (although Tenenbaums was alright I suppose).

I fecking LOVED Grand Budapest. It's quirky, farcical and yet it's got a lot of moments that were bloody hilarious. The plot was a great ride as well, plus it helps that Ralph Fiennes is center stage to knock it out of the park with his performance. Mixed metaphors be damned.

Might need to give this Wes guy's other stuff a crack.

9/10

Check out Moonrise Kingdom. It’s the one he made before Grand Budapest and I really liked it.

Firestarter (2022)

Re-make of an 80's horror.
This one was pretty weak, poor plot , Zac Effron was dreadful.
Ryan Kiera Armstrong does her best with weak material and almost makes it work.
Shame really, like the original, it could have been so much better, the book is excellent
Only plus point for me was the John Carpenter Music,
The 1984 original with Drew Barrymore, David Keith, Heather Locklear, Martin Sheen and George C. Scott, is a much better watch.

4/10

The French Dispatch

Lea Seydoux gets her baps out.

10/10

Moonrise Kingdom up next.

@The Firestarter 4/10 so would not bang, agreed.

Incendies. Another Villeneuve film, from before he went to Hollywood, and this ons is really good. His usual type of great shots and camerawork, combined with great acting and, this time, a story that really works.

To their surprise, twins find out when their mother dies that they have a brother and that their dad is still alive, and that they have to go from their home in Canada to Lebanon (not identified as such, but clearly Lebanon), where their mum grew up and they were born, to find them back. In what unfolds, they learn a lot about their mother's life and the drama of civil war.

The story's details were a little confusing sometimes (well, for me; it was super clear to my wife!), but it is very well developed and the drama is very impactful. I'd really recommend this one.
@spontaneus1 @Hectic :lol:

Unbelievable film. The main character is incredible and the poignancy breaks your heart.

Massive Talent was great, I thought. Did not expect it to essentially be a buddy movie but Pascal and Cage nailed it.

Have a real loathing for Wes Anderson films. Don't know why but he just annoys me. Feel he is all aestetic over substance.
That particular movie went downhill really quickly after that part. It basically consisted of people talking really fast with French chucked in now and then. I usually can't get into his stuff but Grand Budapest really was brilliant because it was less fart sniffing and more pushing Nazis off of cliffs.

The Post - some called it ‘All the President’s Men’ lite, but it has enough gravitas & substance to stand alone very well. First film I’ve ever seen Tom Hanks smoke in, but he had to playing Ben Bradlee.

Tenenbaums, Grand Hotel, Moonrise Kingdom, Life Aquatic are all great. Rushmore is pretty good too. French Dispatch was showing off way too much.

But I love George Clooney as a fox, so what do I know.

I didn’t really like French Dispatch either (compared to some of this other work). Reviewed it not to long ago saying the same.

Rush Hour - awesome silly fun with the excellent Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker. I wonder how much of the dialogue would be construed as racist by today’s standards. Anyway, it’s great 8/10

Rush Hour 2
- not as good as the first one but still in the same vein of great action scenes, and some great dialogue. Chris Tucker’s high pitched screams are hilarious. 6/10

Heat

Rewatched after many years. A real slow burn, intense film that is much more than a diner scene between two legends. Really well worked, the direction, the way it looks, the fact you can smell and feel LA, it's a really good film with a great cast. Longer than I remembered but I really enjoyed it on repeat viewing. 8/10
