Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

12 Angry Men (1957) Excellent movie. Full of suspense. Great atmosphere setting it within one room. Very well written script. Characters interacted well. Never watched any of them before. Powerful performances. Henry Fonda and Lee J.Cobb particularly stood out but everyone was superb in their own right. @BeforeKeanetherewasRobson Thanks for recommending this :) If you hadn't mentioned it I wouldn't have watched it as I don't normally watch older movies. 8/10

You've just watched it today? That was quick. Glad you liked it.

There are some good older films but I think you have to be very selective as a lot of 50s films were very much 'of their time'.

You may have seen them but All about Eve, High Noon, The bridge on the River Kwai all very good films.

12 Angry Men is indeed a stone cold excellent film.

In terms of older films to watch, Casablanca, Wild Strawberries and maybe one of the Powell and Pressburger films (The Red Shoes or A Matter of Life and Death) jump to mind.

Gomorrah (2014 - Ongoing) TV Series

Ciro disregards tradition in his attempt to become the next boss of his crime syndicate. The internal power struggle puts him and his entire family's life at risk.

Based on true events and an original book by Roberto Saviano. This is truly a modern masterpiece of storytelling. If you liked Soprano's, you will love this. Superb performances all round. This one is on the level of The Wire, Mad Men, Breaking Bad and Soprano's.

Just finished watching it before I wrote that post. Never heard about All about Eve or High Noon. Heard about Bridge over River Kwai but never watched it. I'll have a look at those ones you mentioned. I normally like heist movies, gangster movies, psychological movies, like some Westerns and very much into true stories. But if a movie sounds good I will probably watch most genres. Thanks for recommendations :)

Although I prefer modern movies, I just read about Wild Strawberries and it sounds interesting and will probably watch it in the next few days. Thanks for mentioning :)

Ex Machina

Coder at a major Search Engine wins contest to visit his CEO’s isolated forest home. There he discovers AI and is asked by the CEO to test for real intelligence

8/10
Between this and Interstellar for film of the decade for me. It's almost perfect.

Shadow
A once beaten army commander trains his doppleganger as he plans to take control of an empire whilst two rival clans battle. From the guy that directed House of Flying Daggers and Hero. Looks amazing. Every shot is like a Chinese ink painting with the way the shots are composed and the washed out black and white colour palette with splashes of red for when there is blood on the screen. The fight scenes were astonishing. The story was also intriguing. Only criticism is the opening 20 or so minutes, I was very confused what was going on. Once your get past that, it's fascinating. Think I'll enjoy this even more on a second viewing 7.5/10

Never heard of this. Sounds interesting. Will take a look at this. Thanks for the review :)

If you fancy old films try Seven Days in May too. Some Like it Hot, Best Years of Our Lives, Strangers on a Train.

The Odd Couple's excellent too.

Edit: Damn, that's a comedy.

The Third Man.

I'm not a particular lover of old movies, although I think I could start getting into them. I like most types of movies especially Tarantino's ones but don't like romcoms. Thanks. Just had quick read Strangers on a Traiin sounds exactly like my kind of movie and will definitely worth soon. Best Years of Our Lives sounds ok as does Seven Days in May. I watch quite a lot of movies thank very much for the recommendations :)

Third Man sounds interesting as well. Plenty to start watching. Cheers :)
It does sound interesting and has rave reviews, this thread got me watching some old films, there is plenty of excellent old films out there, Hitchcock is a good set of very good films, Dial M for Murder , Rear Window, Vertigo are just a few. I have been recommended Double Indemnity also.

Used to really like Hitchcock when I was younger can only remember bits of Psycho, The Birds, enjoyed a Lady Vanishes. Thanks for mentioning them :) I've heard them but not watched them. Will put them on the list and watch soon. Might get back into Hitchcock but haven't watched any of his movies for over 20 years.

Vertigo I miss-typed this as Vertiho initially and thought that'd make for an interesting porno spin-off. It's almost impossible not to be taken in by the non-porn Hitchcock version, in which every shot and every moment is so perfect and loaded with meaning. Currently working our way through this list.

The Girl On The Third Floor
Whilst his wife is pregnant, a man renovates their new house, not knowing that it's haunted. Awful, boring movie. CM Punk plays the protagonist, but he can't act. It tried to be funny, it wasn't. Just slow with nothing happening. Some violence and creepy imagery in the final 20 minutes but I was well checked out by then 2/10

The Gentleman is probably one of the best Guy Ritchie movies I've seen in a long time. Up there with Snatch.

Little Women is rather lovely. Not sure how annoyed by it the book buffs will be.

I hadn't read the book but thought the film was fantastic - it's very rare a two hour film can introduce an audience to that many characters and make you actually care about what happens to each one. All the performances were great (even Emma Watson, who I don't really rate based on the films of hers I've seen).

My lass and her sisters/mam all grew up with the book and loved it too so I doubt there's too much for book-fans to twist about.

The Divine Fury

It is a South Korean film about an MMA fighter helps an exorcist fight evil.
It was dubbed so may have lost a bit, but I enjoyed it, it was the Exorcist meets Ghost Rider, sounds like it would be a disaster, but it was actually pretty decent.
The two main actors, Ahn Sung Ki and Park Seo Joon. The big generation gap was well handled
It is absolutely bonkers and should not work, but is absolutely does! The balance between drama, horror and action has been executed perfectly

8/10

Great film but I don't think its better than Incendies, Arrival or Blade Runner.

Denis Villeneuve is probably the director of the decade.

Colossal (2017) - Really weird take on a Godzilla movie, tying it into alocholism and manipulative relationships. The bar owner guy is creepy. 8/10, mostly for originality.

[I think it's original, I haven't seen any other Godzilla films completely but IIRC they're at most metaphors for environmental damage]

JoJo Rabbit Hitler as a comedic device is a bold choice but it actually works well most of the time. One scene is tear inducingly funny and worth the admission price on its own. 7/10

Hustlers - How the feck is Jennifer López 50? Seriously. She’s stunning in this movie. I didn’t really pay attention to the plot. 6/10

Uncut Gems

An absolute frenzied 2 hrs of cinema. Was fully absorbed for the entire stretch and it includes a career best turn from Sandler who just nails the adrenaline junkie to a tee. Nice to see Eric Bogosian back on the screen too. The Safdie brothers are building up quite the catalogue although I do wish they'd turn the soundtrack down at the start and end of their films. Doesn't really add anything imo and just grates.

Also Wayne Diamond, wtf  Instantly had to Google who the hell this cat was.

There you go @Ubik, a sequel as requested.

Excellent, looks like it could happen quickly as well. Johnson seems like the nicest guy in the business.

Also makes me laugh that this has made more than Rise of Skywalker in China.

Gemini Man
An virgin over-the-hill hitman faces off against a younger clone of himself. I think this was filmed at a strangely high frame rate as the whole film just didnt feel right to look at. Most of the VFX work was shoddy as hell also. The plot was quite predictable... having said all that, I was entertained seeing Will Smith take on the Fresh Prince. Some of the action sequences were done well 5/10

Is the fact he's a virgin relevant to the plot?

Ang Lee has a thing for 120 fps at the moment.
