The Redcafe Champions League Draft

I purposely didn't mention him by name hopefully my hint was not too obvious sorry about that.

I was having a laugh Jaffy, if anyone got worked up about that they need a chill pill pronto.

I wonder where the line is drawn though, I didn't comment on the whole Gallas thing as, even without mentioning names, what I was about to say would immediately trigger thoughts on 1-2 players who haven't been picked as much as I immediately thought about Chiellini.

Is that allowed or not?

Just don't name names, not arsed what else you do.

We are up to the 8th pick and the draft has gone fine so far, so I think you're overcomplicating it.

Chiellini's pick had nothing to do with Joe's post. Was always going for him

Great pick mate! The depth of quality at centre back in the late 1990s/early 2000s was insane. There's still a few good options knocking about too.

Yeah, that's something Aldo mentioned re: Ronaldo and Messi which is hugely relevant. Ronaldo destroyed some of the best centre back pairings ever seen, there certainly was a consistent top quality across the board at club level, something that is completely absent these days.

Yupp I know akash, was a good pick.

Let's just drop this now anyways! The aim of this game was to have a bit of fun during work etc, so lets get back to talking about football :)

Nesta---Ferrara

Yep, which is why I can safely say that Batistuta is the best striker in the draft apart from R9! Ronaldo and Messi don't count..

Abgloma is a fine pick. If he was on the go today only Lahm would rival him.

You seemed to be implying thats what used to happen in previous drafts.

No, just that there has never been that degree of overreaction. People were careful, the occasional slip happened but no one went overboard over it. I certainly don't remember people having to delete or edit their posts.

I know that, I had suggested Montero to you and you said you preferred Chiellini, which is why I could vividly remember Joe's post. Jaffy's was an absolutely valid post, I only brought it up as a way of indicating "where do we draw the line?".

Names, fine.

Nesta---Ferrara

Awesome pair that indeed. EDogen is quickly becoming my favourite with that spine, I love those two and Hierro-Luis Enrique in midfield.

Two non-CL winners in those four, and all four final worthy.

Only one non-CL winner, Ferrara won it in 96 I think.

But yeah he is looking great, I know who I would get to finish that team off as well. I do think you slightly overrate Enrique though.

Desailly/Blanc and Nesta/Ferrara are the strongest CB pair and both sets share the same nationality, definitely a bonus in doing that.

So that's your plan when you face Jake and kps? Messi and Ronaldo don't count?

Not overly highly, below those two certainly. Probably Raul or Sheva level?

Mmmmmmm. I would ignore the Raúl bit as Raúl had more to his game than just being a striker. Romario was very special at certain things. I think he would be formidable in the current Barca side. If I had to pick a striker from this draft to play in that team instead of Messi it would certainly be him, not Batistuta, not even Ronaldo.

Strikers are odd creatures, their quality and effectiveness is strongly related to the way the team goes about playing and creating opportunities. That's where my first draft pick would have been Ronaldo, he is far and away the best in the sort of setup I prefer, but if you had tiki taka possession football I bet he would fall asleep halfway through the game.

Unfortunately this pair may suffer if people remember their time in the PL.

Of course, I keep forgetting they won their first of three finals. Such a great side that one.

With Hierro next to him, I'd rather have Luis Enrique than Keane, and that's saying something.

Absolutely.

I was thinking before though that everyone has a couple of players who will be underrated, I reckon Ferrara might for example. Crespo will almost certainly be underrated compared with his peak at Parma, going to be a hard sell because people will associate him with Chelsea.

Romario was probably the best finisher i have ever seen. I used to be absolutely shitting myself when he played against United if he got a chance around goal. If he played for the current Barca side feck knows how many he would score.

Exactly, he was mentally three steps ahead of any defender, had an extraordinary ability to operate in tight spaces and was absolutely deadly.

Yup, incredible team. The best of the three sides didn't even win it, with Davids etc.

I suspect that is why Gio went for Montero over Ferrara, because he wasn't there in 95/96 season so has no CL win.

Yeah I definitely think you overrate him a bit, even with Hierro I would take Keane everytime.

There's a name leaping out at me too that would round off that team beautifully.

Hope not. With them together as a pair, people will think of France '98 & Euro 2000 rather than PL. I'll have to remind them!

I don't know what it was about that final with Madrid but I remember thinking football had finally changed forever. There was something about the pace of it all that just made me feel like that. Finals weren't supposed to be played like that, team were supposed to be conservative, tight at the back, pass the ball around... yet at some points I felt I was struggling to keep up with what was going on. I have never watched it again, maybe if I do I'll just go "huh?".

Montero as a non-CL winner is an absolute steal in round 7.

Yeah I definitely think you overrate him a bit, even with Hierro I would take Keane everytime.

United bias, and he certainly would get more votes, but Luis Enrique was a better proposition going forward. Keane was no mug, but Luis Enrique was a cut above. His goalscoring record was akin to Lampard's but with him not taking penalties or free kicks! Truly phenomenal player.

True. He made a huge difference to them. Took the club up a level

He just oozed class. I never meant him as a controversial one, when I mentioned dividing opinions I was precisely thinking about how you should avoid the thoughts of Blanc at United and not even try sell Desailly at Milan, but rather sell Desailly-Blanc for France.

They were so proficient, they looked like they didn't need to break sweat to make short work of rival moves. For once, French arrogance you would bow to.

I guess I never took to Romarios as much as others did, it would be a close call who I would have between him and Sheva and I bet most would disagree with that.

How often did he play vs Utd?

Frankly Montero was a perfect fit for Ferdinand and Zambrotta. There is a deep pool of centre-halves including Ferrara and amongst them there were two or three non-Champions League winners who stood out. Irrespective of that factor Montero was such a good fit that I would likely have gone with him in any case.

It's a frightening thought, I suspect he'd be tearing open the record books in the same way Messi did.

When people are looking at my midfield pairing, they can either look at the two of them together at Liverpool, where they did quite well. Or at Barcelona and Madrid, where they have been brilliant in my book. Especially Xabi.

I didn't know Neville was picked. Shite. Paul McShane will have to do I think.

What final is that anto? How good where those Juve sides?
