The RedCafe Boxing Thread

Tonight begins a nice little collection of some good fights coming up after what seemed like a bit of a stale period over the last few months.

All this tonight:
Lucian Bute vs. Glen Johnson
Allan Green vs. Sebastien Demers
Alfredo Angulo vs. James Kirkland
Chris Arreola vs. Alonzo Butler
Ricky Burns vs. Michael Katsidis
George Groves vs. Paul Smith

Anyone watching Katsidis vs Burns? Burns is boxing well and mostly keeping Katsidis off of him so far. Starting to inflict some damage at the end of the third round too. Katsidis is one of my favourite fighters but he's taken some beatings lately and he's struggling again tonight.

Im surprised nobody has mentioned Angulo Kirkland. They beat the shit out of each other then Kirkland beat the shit out of Angulo for 6 rounds.

Def lived up to it's billing and if you get the chance catch it, if not pm me for a link or something

I would very much like a link.

Surprised this isn't being discussed:

Floyd being called out for ducking Pacquiao. Both come out looking stupid but Floyd makes a right tit of himself. Bringing up the host's skin colour and then playing the race card :wenger:

That MGM booking on May 5th is a joke too. That's not how fights are made. Just very weird.

Floyd is an idiot. Not exactly news. Have you seen this?

According to Top Rank's CEO Bob Arum, WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. is attempting to close a deal to face Erik Morales, the WBC champion 140-pounds, on May 5th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. A few days ago, Mayweather's adviser, Leonard Ellerbe, said Mayweather was planning to return on May 5th of next year, and they already had the MGM Grand on hold. Ellerbe said Mayweather was looking to fight the "little fella" but Arum says the little fella is not WBO champion Manny Pacquiao, but Erik Morales of Mexico.

“You know who the little fellow that they already approached? It’s Erik Morales,” Arum told the Manila Bulletin. “And Erik will confirm it – absolutely. Erik has been approached to make the fight. He’ll take it for the money. I’m sure he’ll take it for the money. Why wouldn’t he?"

Arum's information may not be as crazy as everyone believes, because several days ago in the Mexican press - Golden Boy Promotions head matchmaker Eric Gomez was directly quoted as stating that his company was trying to make a fight between Morales and Mayweather, and both sides were very interested.

“I don’t know who’s gonna buy it (Mayweather vs Morales). But that’s the whole nonsense is all about,” said Arum. “He (Mayweather) was on television last night. They say, ‘Why don’t you fight Pacquiao?’ And he says, ‘Take the test, take the test.’ What the f-k is he talking about? Everybody knows that’s not an issue anymore. He will not fight Manny Pacquiao. And who cares. There are some better guys out there for Manny to fight.

“They bull----ed the MGM to get the date, to get May 5. So they cut us out of getting May 5. But we don’t need May 5 because we’re not fighting a Spanish guy next. But they want May 5 because they’re fighting Morales.”

Wow, had not seen that. That is fecking hilarious

What is Floyd doing? He's literally ruining his reputation, which has already been damaged a shitload over the last couple years. Nobody will buy that fight apart from the Flomos.

Down goes Frazier. :(

He was only diagnosed in September with liver cancer.

Boxing back then is legendary. Now we have punks like Mayweather who are the pinnacle of the sport yet are afraid to fight someone.

One of the old all time great fighters! Some epic battles to look back on. Sad end. :(

Absolute legend of the sport and 67 is no age to go. Only ever bettered by the brilliance of Ali and the immense power of Foreman.

He Ali, and Foreman define what heavyweight boxing should be about they would have made mincemeat out of the likes of the clowns you see competing in that division these days.

I really hope his death doesn't go without massive tributes. RIP to him.

Outstanding, against arguably the greatest boxer of all time.

To be fair for all the criticism of Mayweather (rightfully or wrongly) he's offered to pay for the funeral so it's a bit harsh to call him a "punk"

Still a sad loss, his 3 fights with Ali were well before my time but I've seen them since on TV, the 1st and 3rd are classic great fights which you just don't see anymore, especially not in heavyweight fights. RIP.

'What it came down to in Manila,' Jerry Izenberg, a leading American sportswriter, says now, 'wasn't the heavyweight championship of the world. Ali and Frazier were fighting for something more important than that. They were fighting for the heavyweight championship of each other.'

Makes the current crop of heavyweights look like a bunch of pussies.

This is the Madison Square Gardens fight isn't it?

I understand that Frazier was in hospital for several weeks afterwards from his injuries but Ali left after few hours against doctors orders to stay for a few days so as not to loose face.

Remember when Frazier was on The Simpsons?

"Webster's Dictionary defines 'excellence' as the state or condition of being excellent."

:D That's how I'll remember him. As excellent. RIP Joe.

How anyone can like this absolute cnut of a human being is beyond me.

If he died I wouldn't mind it.

 What a complete and utter tool. Pretty much re-affirmed all by himself what people have been saying about him ducking the fight against Pacquaio. Touchy bastard ain't he? Oh and the whole race card thing was just pathetic.

My homepage should link to streams ( they won't appear until an hour before) for pacquiao marquez. If it doesn't follow the main url to other sports.
