The Reality Draft: Main Thread (Finals)

Noon tomorrow for me and Viva as the starting time Ed.

Any time suits me @antohan I've work 9 to 5 but I'm on a computer and shouldn't be too busy. Also this is my starting team:

Great team. Really nicely balanced and I love that midfield, Tigana is one my favorites in these drafts. I think you lack a little bit going forward but that's just my feeling in comparison to other teams.
By the way, why not change Kohler and Popescu so Kohler will cover Zambrotta's defensive weakness?

Will change that, yes.

Yeah I'd say I lack a bit in terms of creative playmakers, I probably would have taken Figo if he was available in the last round, but with Batistuta I think this team can play pretty direct and be successful at it, also, the full backs will over lap and allow some freedom for del Piero and Donadoni,

You could have tried to accomodate Popescu instead of Cerezo in that role but I don't think dropping Cerezo would be a good move given how he frees up Robson and Tigana.

Not sure on Donadoni's role here though. As Viva said, you lack a bit of oomph upfront. One option would be to try a gamble with Koke and Del Piero in a Christmas tree.

Having Koke in there weakens the team in terms of 'greatness' and getting votes.

Donadoni would be a right winger, basically, wouldn't be as high or narrow as del Piero on the other side, which the image doesn't really show, actually.

A bit of a chicken and egg thing, isn't it? Did Passarella have a style that happened to work in that system or did he develop a style that worked in that system?

Probably a bit of both.

Aye. And another thing I remember is that Passarella's CB partner Galvan was really, really mental at times and not at all positionally responsible - certainly no McGrath - and so curbing things on the ball made sense in '78.

That said I think it was Passarella's style anyway, whilst he'd occasionally move up the pitch he did not have the technique of someone like Beckenbauer who was much more comfortable doing more expressive things in possession.

This at 11.10m is a typical example of what Passarella would do when he advanced forward

He receives it from the left back and shows some nice skill to get away from two players before playing a simple pass and looking for the return. When it doesn't come you can see him just jogging back into position. But really even this isn't too common, first and foremost he was just a fantastic, dominant defender - the playmaking was secondary. Also of course he'll start ahead of Campbell Anto, he's a far better defender.

He does feature more along the left side to be fair.

Reason is that he wasn't a centre back, he was a sweeper/libero and in the catenaccio/zona mista the left back was usually more of a wing-back, while the right back wasn't a full back at all - instead a right centre back. Scirea should play as a libero/sweeper, centrally with each centre back outside of him being comfortable defending as full backs on their respective sides.

Scirea would push up in to the opponents box at times during games and very often push up to a defensive playmaking position when the team had possession.

Yes - what this man says.

But to get out my old hobby horse again, we have to consider what sort of player he was - and how he'd fare in a system different from the one he excelled in during his peak. Same goes for any player. Can Scirea do a job - nay, one hell of a job - as a "mere" CB in a standard four man defense? Obviously - yes. His defensive nous is immense, his purely defensive skills (such as tackling) likewise. So, yes - he can play CB alongside another CB and be utterly brilliant, there shouldn't be any doubt about that.

Left or right? I reckon he'll do well on either side. But he was a right footed player, as far as I know - so I guess Van Gaal, at least, would've played him on the right.

It's good to have Popescu on his strongest side given what he can offer moving forward on the ball.

Immense player going forwards... his footwork during that goal for Tardelli in the world cup final..., but one whose attacking forays will have to be slightly limited in my team.. if he does wish to go on an attacking venture, he can do so down the left flank and Belodedici can tuck into CB or if he wishes to help out in midfield when in possession, Zanetti can stay back and form a three. Davids would hold.

I know that I'm starting to sound like a broken record, but I really need to know when the game is going to happen if it is to happen at all. @MJJ
If I won't know soon, I don't know if I can manage to fit it in this week

@Theon - maybe you know something?

Well, considering I am four hours behind, I would be looking at starting around 1/2PM GMT so I can be there at the start and also a couple of hours before the end.

I preferred your other formation with Cole as LCB :annoyed:

That's grand so.

The perfect position to track Ljunberg.

Now way that I can do this on a weekend though, I will be moving.
Wednesday preferably, Friday is possible and Thursday is bad, but acceptable.

MJJ's internet hasn't sorted, so I'll do the game. I've just got home from work now and it's going to be like this all week. Fair enough about the weekend if you're moving, so it'll have to be Friday. @Edgar Allan Pillow
