The Overlap - Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

I lose respect for Ole every time he speaks. All he does is throw others under the bus to save face, he's a pure snake. No wonder our dressing room had a lot of backstabbing while he was here. It starts from the leadership and trickles down.

Thankfully it stopped under Ragnick. Oh, wait.

Strange take - I feel he invites too much blame on himself because he's too nice.

The Haaland thing, with his size and pace, and coming from a market where we've had success over the years, shouldn't we have been contacting Ole about him and not the other way around. Any scout watching him surely could have seen how a big, physical, quick striker with an eye for goal had potential to be a success in the PL. We signed Dalot after 6 games for Porto first team, Diallo had 4 games for Atalanta, Pellistri came from one season in the Uruguayan Primera. All those players were scouted on potential, feels like we missed out on this one.

We missed out in a monumental way unfortunately

Ole was referring to when Haaland was at Molde. I am pretty sure that Haaland's father didn't get close to 30m at that point. What prime United would have done was to offer him a very attractive (game play + financial) package which would have made it worth their while to move here rather then Salzburg and then Dortmund. The Haalands would have accepted because prime United was a guarantee in terms of developing top tier young talent. Once he hits the 24-25 years of age then Haaland would have moved to Real/PSG for crazy money just as Ronaldo did a generation before.

The only issue here was Raiola. Prime United were wise enough to stay away from the man

Exactly how it should have worked but Utd ignored Ole on this like a bunch of complete clowns

I can believe that players stopped running and stopped believing, because we could see it and we can even see it now. So how these guys can even be allowed to play for United is staggering. First sign of that and they should have been shown the nearest exit.

This whole don’t want to be captain thing for this or that game means none of them should ever be captain. Our recruitment has been terrible over the last decade.

Good interview. He was very honest and open.

Ole is a good guy, but lets face is, he was never Manchester United manager material. He doesn't have the experience, charisma or aura for it.

He was a substitute teacher. The kids loved him to start with, but they soon started taking the piss.

I long for the days where we'd come from behind to win games. Didn't that happen a record number of times that season? I can only remember us doing that a couple of times under Ten Hag. Usually if we don't score first then our players look defeated.

Yeah it happened a hilarious amount. I don’t remember specifically but at one point I’m pretty sure we conceded first in some stupid amount of games.

The board and scouts said no to haaland for 20 million euros but was OK signing Antony for 85 million

It is human nature to drop standards if you start to lose faith in management. It happens in regular workplaces and it happens in football.

And unfortunately, you cant give all the players the exit. They are on long contracts and have a massive market value.

I wouldn't go so far, but definitely seems like he's learned no lessons. Seems to believe that he did everything right, but it just didn't work out.

Which is infuriating. Every man and his dog has an opinion on Ole's managerial prowess but even the staunchest Ole out agree that Ole knows his while in terms of scoring goals. The very thought that he was ignored on that regard is infuriating.

The part about him being a player -- loved it.
The part about his time being our manager -- feck me. He's either a fool or loves acting like one.

So which games was the regular captain missing for that other players didnt want to be captain for? The timeline blurs together at this point and other than the few games at the end of the season when Maguire was injured I dont remember him missing too often and hes never struck me as the type of player to avoid responsibility by not being captain in certain games.

Get Ralf Rangnick on next and let him go scorched earth.

We should have paid close attention to Haaland, Ole or not. Ole putting in a word means nothing. Who knows how many shite players Ole also wanted. Maybe he'd lost credibility by that time. Point is, we'll never hear about his terrible suggestions from Ole, so I'd take the good ones with a pinch of salt.

Yeah completely agree

The other key takeaway from this interview for me (not that it was ever in doubt) was that ultimately he wasn't the right manager for us. He can talk about some issues with the players but all the sound bites from him suggest to me that we were never going to progress as he wanted to, even if recruitment had been better.

I also wouldn't give the club too much flak for not taking up Ole's advice about Haaland at Molde. I'm sure the club with have loads of experience players who are coaches, calling them up telling them to sign player X as he's going to be world class. For all we know Ole had raved about other players who turned out not to have careers at the top level too.

No, the club hierarchy and decision makers deserve to be shat on.

I've not listened to/watched this particular interview, but he's said a couple of times that he basically offered Haaland to us on a plate while he was still Molde manager, for like £4 million max.

We spent £20 million Dalot, based on half a dozen appearances for Porto, £15 million on Dan James based on a single season in the Championship, £10 million on Pellistri based on a single season in Uruguay (and because Forlan told Ole he could speak English), and £20+ million on Diallo based on four appearances for Atalanta.

We either sent a scout to watch him, who reported back that he's nothing special, or we simply ignored the offer. Both of which are absolutely criminal.

Which specific people do you think he threw under the bus in this interview?

It's not about throwing specific people. But didn't seem very reflective. I got the impression that he doesn't seem to think that he did anything wrong. Like circumstances conspired against him all the time.

Roy pointed out the stupidity in his logic of going toe toe against City and Liverpool at OT despite Ole being aware that they are much better teams. Ole didn't agree that that was a mistake. He just kept saying that at home we must dominate etc.

Same thing with the Ronaldo signing. At no point did he seem to believe or say that was a mistake or what he'd learned from it. Just said that Ronaldo agreed to be rested a game for every 3 played and then sulked when he got rested. So the mess made by his return was all Ronaldo's fault.

With Sancho, he just brushed it off with I didn't spend time with him, so can't say anything at all beyond what his favorite position was. Like what exactly was his plan when signing him, what did he see in Sancho as a person that suggested this was a man utd player, no insight into things like that.

That is a complete pisstake and most posters would agree. But if you had said this about Jose, you would have had lots of posters cheering you.

What about Roy driving nine hours through Norway to check in on Ole? Some man.
Under all that piss taking he seems like a good mate. The first 10 minutes was brutal though

“have you thought about a job in America”
“Disneyland?”

Some pretty interesting...hints here and there. You wish the format of the thing was different - you'd want someone to keep pushing him on certain points. But - of course - the format is what it is. It was never going to be a hard hitting Q & A about his time as United manager.

Enjoyable, though - sure.

Keano's reaction when Ole brings up Fred

That’s all well and good, but the poster I quoted specifically said he keeps throwing people under the bus. So I’m curious which people he actually did throw under the bus in this interview.

That is not true. He said it was a right decision at the moment, but in hindsight it did not work for him and it did not work for Ronaldo. Which is a decent take.

And my point is that he may have also offered other players who didn't do that well after they moved elsewhere. We'll never know. Managers would never share that info. I mean, look at the almost-signed-for-Wenger-X1.

Plus tbf, signing Haaland for 20 million from Molde is a no brainer only in hindsight. We also signed a generational talent in Martial who failed to reach his potential. So I understand the club being a bit wary about this kind of gamble. But the lack of consistency is baffling when we then go and pay the kind of money we did for Antony.

Ole recommended him a year before he took the job himself.

Lots of love here for Ole(even as a manager, which is weird)people can be quite naive because they love how someone talks. There is a clear reason he is out of job, and that's because he is not very good manager. Same as his mate Gary.

Saying that, he is our legend and I like him in general, he is one of my favourite players in United's history, but that's different to his time as a manager, I know he wanted United well but he wasn't good enough. I would like to be United manager, just because I am fan it doesn't mean people should like me as a manager either. Even these interview don't really make him look anything more quality than he made himself as a manager.

Saying no one wanted to be captain, and taking digs at players, but he continued to pick his favourites every game is funny how he contradicts himself. Ronaldo thing is funny too, same as his comment on Cavani. He doesn't even explain why he signed Ronaldo then? Is it because they are mates? Because that's exactly how it looks after his comments and all that fiasco.

I doubt he was recommending us every young player they had. Haaland was developing a reputation at Molde anyway.

Also, Martial cost us something like £40 million up front. It's hardly a gamble when you're signing a young player for a tenth of that.

That is not true. He said it was a right decision at the moment, but in hindsight it did not work for him and it did not work for Ronaldo. Which is a decent take.

This is observable reality. But I would've liked more insight on why he believed bringing him back was a good idea in the first place. Felt like a wasted chance, that's all.

Did Ole just hope that Ronaldo will score us so many goals that we can afford to basically defend with 10 men in 75% of our games?

He mentioned Ronaldo potentially mentoring our young strikers. But then Ronaldo shouldn't expect so many minutes and why did Ole agree to this kind of an arrangement? Not to mention Ronaldo's never been known for his passion to nurture young talented teammates.

Ole recommended him a year before he took the job himself.
Yeah but don't you know, he may have also recommended a hundred garbage players. We can't prove he didn't, so he's already accepted his version as reality.

Like what exactly was his plan when signing him, what did he see in Sancho as a person that suggested this was a man utd player, no insight into things like that.
That is, if he was the one who suggested to the club to sign Sancho. As Ole clearly explained, he gets a list from scouts and he gets a vote to veto if he thinks that a player is not good enough. Sancho at Dortmund was not bad.

Yeah but don't you know, he may have also recommended a hundred garbage players. We can't prove he didn't, so he's already accepted his version as reality.

Is it more likely that he recommended us basically every player on his books at Molde, or a young player that was clearly very gifted?

Not sure what digs you are referring - after managing United for 3 years, ofcourse he will have some stories to tell. Saying no one wanted to be a captain for certain games without naming any names is not really a dig. He was quite dignified and was very soft in any criticism.
He already answered your question on why he kept on picking his favourites. These were the players from his perspective who were doing what they were consistently and giving him 7/10 on the pitch. You can disagree with his view on their performances but hard to argue with the logic.

But I would've liked more insight on why he believed bringing him back was a good idea in the first place. Felt like a wasted chance, that's all.
Again, Ole had a veto decision to make.
The club said Ronaldo was available to move. Ole had to decide very quickly. So unless he could predict the disaster, or had a solid reason to think one of the top scorers of all time would scupper the team, he could not say no. He also mentioned that he thought the likes of Rashy, Greenwood and Sancho would benefit immensely from Ronaldo's experience and work ethic.
