In anything, it's his blandness that rubs people the wrong way, it's falsely offensive but it's so boring and out of touch, it's just sad.

There is a very strange thing with a section of the public.

If a comedian, musician, anyone creative can't keep producing incredibly good and original material spanning decades they become disliked.

You can see it here. Some have taken it really personally that his stand up isn't that great. Just don't watch it.

Exactly. Most artists struggle to stay at their best, especially when their early stuff is so good. Usually because you can only draw from personal experiences to a certain level and once you've "made it" everything changes.

Look at Eminem, Gervais, Russell Peters, 50 Cent, Neil Blomkamp etc.
 
It's really not difficult to understand.

Gervais has produced nothing but shit for about 15 years. His tv shows and his films and his standup have all been fecking dreadful since then.

He also comes across as a right wing arsehole mocking trans people and constantly complaining about "woke". I think he's said or tweeted some form of the sentence "you have the right to be offended and I have the right to offend you" about 8 trillion times in the last few years.

His standup is a mix of him explaining how he totally pwned someone on twitter, mocking trans people, lazy edgelord humour about rape or dead babies and then stealing funny things Karl Pilkington said 20 years ago.

And by the way, I was a huge Gervais fan originally. So it's got feck all to do with jealousy or anything like that. The Office is maybe the best comedy ever, the XFM shows still make me laugh and Extras was mostly very good. He's just got really lazy and shite.

It was an ok episode, even though it was strange having him on this particular show. I don't find anything Gervais has put out since Extras particularly funny, and in some cases downright unfunny, but he seems like a good guy even though his "common man" schtick comes across as trying too hard.

I liked the part where he was talking about Bowie and how the whole Extras episode came to be, but it just made me miss Bowie even more.

He was never particularly good at stand-up, he just had a built-in adoring fan base from his TV exploits, and so has wrongly become one of the biggest names in stand-up.

I really don’t like Michael McIntyre’s stand-up, but with him I can at least tell that he’s honed that craft and understand his standing.
 
Can anyone tell me the transphobic comments made by Ricky Gervais? I'm sure he made them because many people say this but I don't know what he said.

Never been a fan (outside of the Office, which was good, but not as original as everyone made out at the time).

The stand-up thing is interesting. I've never watched any of his stand-up, but a think a lof of people dislike the fact that he never actually was a stand-up comic prior to his success with sitcoms on TV. The fact that he had fame meant that he could just all of a sudden decide to become a stand-up. To hear actual stand-ups talk about it, it takes years of gigging basically every single day to become good. Going through the inevitable, soul-crushing bad gigs, etc.

Maybe his stand up is funny, I doubt it but I don't know. However, he certainly didn't pay his dues with regard to that craft.

Call him out all you like but worth remembering he started out on Ch.4 with a stand up slot on the 11 o’clock show.

From what I understand he did do some stand-up before Animals, but clearly he hadn’t achieved much. I’ve been at it for five years and it is a bit annoying seeing his lazy stand-up get such huge rewards. But then I have fellow comics who love his special, so it’s not universal.

I just know I couldn’t spend more than 5 mins watching Supernatural before being annoyed about him doing jokes he’s pretty much done before, with his usual artless delivery. Not too far off his Brent persona.
 
Loved the office, although it wasn't as original as some like to make it out to be. Alan Partridge had already been doing that type of show, 2 great shows nonetheless.

Yeah he's not very well liked amongst other stand ups either. Frankie Boyle and Stuart Lee don't like him.

I think it's part of the reason he's never done panel shows either. He's not very popular outside of his own clique.

I agree with most of that. He was much better with Merchant and Pilkington in his corner but they don't speak to him anymore.

I still don't see him as right wing though, he urged people to vote for Corbyn in 2017, He has spoken out against tax avoiders and he said this fairly recently,

You mentioned nurses. There’s that line in the final episode of ‘After Life’ where Anne (Penelope Wilton) says that angels live among us in the form of nurses who work hard to pay their rent.

I did put it in there as a nod to the key workers. I owe everything to the welfare state, I was the fourth kid of an immigrant labourer. We had no money and lived on a council estate. I wouldn’t be where I am if school wasn’t free, if healthcare wasn’t free. But I never felt poor because everything I liked was free. I liked school, I liked learning. I liked nature and hanging out with my friends too, but all those things can’t be enjoyed if you’re not well. That line was a semi-political nod, and I think more and more people throughout the pandemic began to appreciate what’s important. I called my family twice as much as usual and I think you do appreciate these things. For me, it’s about mortality too, as you get older I do think life is precious ’cause it’s finite. Every day is a higher percentage of my life than yesterday! That’s not morbid, but I can’t buy time.
