The Overlap | Chiellini: Roy Keane, Sunderland & Messi vs Ronaldo | The Overlap on Tour: Unseen Ep 2

I quite liked the Everton fan who had been on it for years previously.
Aye, Baz is a good egg and knows his football. StillRyan isn't the most knowledgable when it comes to football but he's one of those feel good people that are in football/the media space.

Insert not his biggest fan meme...

...but thought it was an okay episode. Glad they addressed Gary and his cringey awkward ads.

There's been some good from most fans. Older Everton fan like you say. I think McKola is pretty level-headed. Some are terrible though like Charlene who basically just uses her time to moan about how the world is against Arsenal. She's quite clearly got some sort of defensive inferiority thing because you can tell how easily she gets rattled. They've also never had a non dickhead City fan. I always have to skip them.

Do they exist?

I usually think McKola is okay but he came across as an arsehole in the last fan debate.

Rory is shite. Charlene does come across poorly too. Think the Liverpool fan they have on is good and I like the Villa fan too.

Not a fan of Jill Scott but have to admit I laughed out loud when she said 'what's your password, 1999?'

Why all the hate for Gervais from the cafe?
I was wondering that too. He must have rubbed some the wrong way I guess. Maybe he’s too offensive for some. Nothing wrong with comedians being offensive and controversial in my opinion. All I know is Extras and the Office are the in the top five of funniest shows I’ve ever watched.

Always feel its sad how he just dismisses how much Merchant did for the early stuff - which in my mind is the best - Wright had to actually ask specifically about him and Gervais basically said he got them access to a tv crew...does anyone really hate Gervais?

Interesting episode, not being naïve to him doing it to get back into the public eye for a mass tour of the UK but would like to see these non football guests now and then.

He's been guilty of very lazy comedy in his standup material that is befitting of your standard out of touch old man at the pub rather than a stadium selling comedian.

Personally I find his shtick tired and lazy... He hasn't moved on in 20 years. I've never found him particularly offensive but he does seem to play into it to try and seem relevant.

You’re literally describing every stand up. They are try new things and try to be different when they start. They give a shit and try hard. Once they make it they don’t care anymore. 20 years ago Gervais was still trying to make it. Russell Peters is another example. He was so good 15 years. Now I barely chuckle over the course of an hour. Gervais is still better than Peters.

cos he used to be good and has the talent to be better. he’s just phoning in performances and doing the same tired old routines that weren’t funny the first time round. he’s like a comedy rashford.

Somebody gonna get hurt real bad!

Eh, he was doing this lazy comedy in 2023 in his Netflix special. It's not funny and just shows you to be a shit human being.

United have turned shit and barely turn up in any game, do you hate them?

Ricky Gervais will always be a legend for The Office UK and his Golden Globes ribbing of a-list celebrities and their hypocrisies.

Except Afterlife broke records and so he has complete creative freedom from Netflix. Can’t quite see Amorim saying to Marcus “You’ve been pulling up trees so go out and do whatever you want on the pitch.” Surprisingly Amorim seems to be saying the complete opposite about Marcus.

Good on Ricky for calling them out at the end for being free loaders as well as Harry/William and Madonna.

he broke records by targeting the audience he used to despise and were the butt of his most creative and genius work.

High bar I see.

Mostly jealousy I would presume

Jealousy is always such a bizarre reason. I've very rarely seen someone hate on someone due to actual jealousy  It's like something a child says to respond to someone not liking them.

From my perspective, he was good and funny. Obviously still has tendencies to be funny but I do think he was helped a lot by working with Stephen Merchant. Gervais hasn't stayed as grounded (I had to unfollow him on Twitter years back because all he did constantly was cherry pick praise for his shows and Retweet it - for what purpose except ego stroking?) and has form for punching down on society with his jokes, like the trans community which James Acaster called him out for. Plus all his work has declined in quality and he seems to struggle to get past the thing most comedians do now which is talk about how people get offended and cancel culture instead of just getting on with it and doing your jokes regardless.

In short I don't hate him, I don't wish him bad like I do others but he's just meh now and a bit up his own arse for my liking. He used to mock the person he is today.

I love the UK office and really enjoyed Extras.

I like Gervais's early stand up work too, however I didn't like any of his most recent stuff, he seems like somebody that spends too much time on Twitter and makes lazy trans jokes and outdated quips about Korean's eating dogs etc.

He hasn't moved with the times and he's in danger of becoming a Jim Davidson or Bernard Manning that's telling jokes twenty years too late!

Well I suppose if everyone else is lazy it's ok then..

Yes much of modern mainstream stand up comedy is the same guys from 20 years ago that now have nothing new to offer, and nothing actually insightful to say about the present day world. They should have been mostly replaced by people that have something relevant to say, but that hasn't happened. It's a great time to be alive.

Also he's a millionaire that punches down.

Being a millionaire and being a stand-up doesnt really mix.

He was a comedian and a writer before he was a millionaire. Seems a slightly silly observation to be honest.

He’s also fairly self-deprecating in interviews too. He always calling himself stupid, tubby, loser etc… That’s not somebody who ‘punches down’ with any kind of malice - he just takes the piss out of all without exception.

Probably because his shtick has only become more relevant in 20 years in my view, but takes all types I suppose!

Almost all the really good ones are though, that's how they become millionaires, by being good at stand up?
