The Overlap | Chiellini: Roy Keane, Sunderland & Messi vs Ronaldo | The Overlap on Tour: Unseen Ep 2

It’s different because they have to feck off on international duty, they don’t have to feck off to a different continent for shits and giggles, even though they can. If you’re not performing well, maybe it’s not the best idea to do it just because you can.
You wouldn’t take a break or go on holiday if you were under performing at work? Or if your company was struggling? Each to their own I guess.

Not sure my line of work is all that comparable to a professional athlete where his body is essentially his most important asset.

Doesn’t really matter much. Long hours on a flight to a different continent, the difference in time zones, takes a toll on your body, Gary Neville is right about that, which is why it’s frustrating for clubs when players return back late from international duty and they’ve been away to south america/Asia. So yes, it is vastly different to do it for shits and giggles and when you’re essentially forced to do it

To play devil's advocate, likewise, being in shit form and surrounded around internal/external pressure takes a toll on your mental state. Going away or doing something enjoyable can be equally or perhaps in this case even more practical than 'preserving' what are already pretty elite athletic bodies.

Agree to disagree but long haul flight is long haul flight whatever the purpose, and you aren’t forced into international duty - you can decline the call up like Ben White has done amongst others if you don’t want to be involved with the national set up.

Like fecking off to Belfast for two days of partying, and generally go clubbing in Manchester?

Yeah, i don’t see it.

It’s just stupid choices.

They can still call you up and you risk getting banned if you don’t show up. Also, most players would like to represent their country.

I've always thought that Keane is a terrible pundit, basically constantly using a series of rinse and repeat buzzwords and phrases such as 'character', 'leadership' and 'desire', but is great in and well suited to a low key, relaxed environment like this.

And now with nothing better to write about the mirror has splashed Nevs comments across the back page claiming ‘Utd stars under fire’. Gary needs to be more aware of what he is saying and realise that his opinions write headlines. He isn’t helping the club move forward.

Good on Neville for creating a theme out of thin air before Amorim even had the 1st game.

It's not really thin air though is it. He's taken a player who has shown multiple cases of poor professionalism and questioned his decision to take a 11 hour flight to the a destination with a 8 hour time difference for a very short duration, where he crammed in a stop on the opposite coast to watch some basketball too.

He acknowledged its not breaking rules but questioned the impression for the coach who he's yet to even train under. It was a fair observation for a player known for going off on a bender and missing training the next day because of it.

I'm not aware of that, has that happened often?

All fair, but as someone said in here, Neville should be aware how does his comments come across and that media cant wait for snippets like this. Maybe he should have let this one pass.

In any case hopefully Amorim will not tolerate things like this.

The missing training, reporting as "ill" because of a night out has happened only once. Tardyness has also happened before where he was dropped. You wonder the other facets that may have been swept under the carpet but we can't hypothesize on what we don't know.

What we do know is that he took a 11 hour flight to Portland over a 5 day trip which has an 8 hour time difference, and he went to New York for a bit after for recreation. Timing wise it's just weird, he's only able to choose this because he's not near good enough to get in the England team - and he has a new coach coming where first impressions are vital.

His priorities are clearly wayward, whether he was free to choose to do these things or not. And I don't think Neville put a foot wrong in putting that question out. He's making a dead obvious observation.

Agreed, he acts as if he doesnt really care.

Doesn’t he go clubbing quite frequently as well?

Doesn’t he go clubbing quite frequently as well?
Maybe, and he's welcome to.

The thing thats being missed is that when a player plays well they can get away with a lot of things. Keane said this on the Overlap too, he has no problems with it but when Neville asked "even when your team is 13th?" he was told something like "we weren't though so whats the problem".

Rashford has been quite poor for over a year. If Trent did it tomorrow no one cares, because he's a very good player for a team top of the league. Rashford is in an opposite situation, and he can still do what he wants but getting eyebrows on certain decisions is inevitable.

Doesn't matter too much to your point but given even Gary corrected himself in his interview with Ruben today, it's worth mentioning that neither player went to Portland. Rashford was in New York which is not as long of a flight nor as big of time difference.

How did you interpret his response?

It was perfect. Made it clear that he thinks it’s ridiculous for the players to piss off on a jolly like that, mid-season, without pointing the finger at the players themselves. Exactly the angle needed from a new manager who needs to create expectations but also keep the squad onside.

I agree. He also makes it fairly clear that the standards he’ll be setting won’t leave much room for something like that happening again.

Fine, in my books 8 hours flight with a 5hr time difference for 5 days is daft. Ive done the trip a few times and I know the jet lag that can be hit

Just watched the episode, great stuff as usual.

"It's a powerful image"

Think they need to get a different United fan on, McKola has been meh but inoffensive so far but he came across as a right prick in this one.

No way!!! I love that guy. But......what the hell he has with football in any sense? What an odd choice for guest
It doesn't matter now. They've gotten big enough to where Neville will just get celebs on to promote their shit. In this case, Gervais and his tour.

Cross-brand synergy, innit.

I don’t remember him ever mentioning football, apart from saying “I bloody loves football don’t I”, but chances are Stephen Merchant wrote it anyway
