The notion that we will fail to attract top players if we don't make the CL

Now transfer window is up, let us revisit this. Forget about Di Maria for a second as people may say he only joined Man utd for the money.

Now let us look at Falcao:

1)This guy is playing in Monaco, one of the most beautiful cities in the world, you might not think it makes a difference/petty to a player but south american teams choose Spain over England for the weather and the city. He is didn't care, sill came.

2)Monaco is also a place where so little tax and he is probably earning 3/5 more at Monaco than Man utd because of the tax.Which player would do that? Yet he still moved here.

3)People say why would a player move from a Club that has CL football to come to Man utd? What do you know, As Monaco have CL football this year, yet he still came here to man utd.

So, he is earning less money/shity weather/shittier city (let us just admit it)/No CL football. Yet he still came to us. People may say maybe other teams passed him on, but then why did he not stay at Monaco considering all the factors mentioned above? I know I would stay.

It makes me like Flacao even more know. Yet the Media don't mention this at all.

Hey! The home of the industrial revolution, computers, particle physics, communism, co-operative movement, indie music, tits, fanny and United I'll have you know!

But yeah I agree, it's been reassuring to see the calibre of player we can attract despite our current position. We all know we are one of the very biggest clubs in the world but we've really shown it this summer.

For some reason I really have the impression that Ander Herrera, Blind, Rojo and Shaw really wanted to come here and it wasn't solely about money.

Different players have different motives. Its not always due to money.

Money talks
This.
He already had money at Monaco, and even more than at Man utd.
Monaco didn't want to pay his wages for a season, hence offering him about. He's getting the best deal he could have gotten this summer. City and Arsenal weren't going to pay those wages. Madrid proportioned others. Plus Mendes.
It was a convenient deal, with him being paid what he wants, and also Monaco getting him off the wage bill.

PSG was the only other potential destination for Di Maria, who was pretty much shown the door at Madrid. And we were willing to pay him very well. FFP has helped us this year.

The other guys are all getting a huge step up. No brainer for them, even without Champions League. We're still a huge draw obviously. And once we put the money forward and sell our vision, we stand as good a chance as anyone (other than Bayern, Barcelona or Madrid)

I did have serious doubts about the Glazers, but I'm really happy with the owners putting the money in this summer. Hopefully we shouldn't need to spend like this for a while, but we now always look to improve, even if we're doing well.

Falcao, Blind, Di Maria and Herrera all had CL football at their previous clubs, yet chose to sign for United anyway.

We're not out of Champions League forever. It's overplayed.
We're still a Champions League club.

Some print media say United are second choice for two newly signed players.
That's old news, I thought. Di Maria may well have joined PSG, had they stumped up the cash. Shaw to Chelsea, and Falcao - Madrid.
Most players have a preference. No shame in not being the club they'd most like to go to, in an ideal world - as long as they give their all here.

Laughable notion. I think we just gave everyone who supported that notion the middle finger.

How are teams supposed to fear us if we don't flex?

Monaco is a sinking ship and the players there know it. United is the opposite proposition at the moment. Anyone would leave unless their earnings would be significantly dented. Mendes tried to find a place for Moutinho as well, but not enough time. He'll probably leave in January and Monaco will disappear into mid-table with their 5k fans.

Falcao just tweeted n said, "Moving to @ManUtd was my decision. It's exciting to play at the world's best club and in such a competitive league."

...is absolute nonsense. Footballers have short careers. 99.9% of them only care about money, and this has only been exacerbated by the increased importance of agents, who obviously are only in football to line their own pockets.

You've just summed up modern day football and the transfer window in one sentence. You sir deserve a medal.

City managed to get the likes of Aguero, Toure and Silva in fairness.

I'm not sure how important being in the Champions League is, we've been in every year and yet we've still continually struggled to get big names and the same with Arsenal despite them always qualifying. The main thing is that we'll have to be complete hypocrites about City and just throw loads of money at these players and to try to convince them that we will be back competing in the next year or two. That said, I'm not completely confident the club will be quite as loose with the purse strings as is suggested nor that players will really believe that the club will be challenging again straight away.

It's about the money. Being in the Champions League means jack shit if you're making in excess of 150k/week. Most players in the Champions League don't make that anyway. Aston Villa will attract good enough players if they spend their money on crazy wages...so will any other club.

Tottenham could have signed Blind and Herrera. Those two are awful examples.
No they could not. Maybe Blind but not Herrera. Give me one example when a good player which Bilbao didn't wanted to sell went to 2 (Liverpool) or 3 (Tottenham) tier club.

Not only that Bilbao don't sell or don't want to sell their best players, their best player are usually local lads (ok Herrera is Zaragoza product) or lads who support Bilbao because they are very important to basque people.

Rojo too. Sporting had only just qualified for the CL for the first time in a few years. 5 out of 6 of our signings gave up CL for at least one season to come here. Good window!

Maybe my opinion on you is wrong. Maybe sometimes you do make sense and posts like the above are just isolated incidents. I can't really be an objective judge, what with bursting out laughing every time I read what it says in your location.

It matters, but not for the big 4 clubs (United, Madrid, barca, bayern) they will always have the money, history, support and constant backing to continue at the top therefore its allways going to be a safe bet.

Shaw was overpaid and overpriced, Herrera was overpriced, di maria had a solid 10m whacked on the fee, rojo and blind were fine at market value, falcao was cheap as feck on a 6m loan fee, and this 350k a week is nonsense, its just under 200k as someone worked out earlier.

At the end of the day, money talks. If we want to get the big signings we need and want, we will have to do a PSG/City/Monaco and go Sheikh-spending style on players. Simple as that really. Whether the Glazers will go this length however remains to be seen.

Spot on there, no other clubs matched your offers for Shaw, Di Maria & Falcao so they all came. I think Gary Neville said the other day you've lost your negotiating strength so just need to do whatever it takes to bring the players in.

There was an Agent on the radio the other day and he was saying that all his clients EVER care about is "the size of the cheque"

Tottenham have recently signed Vertonghen and Eriksen. They definitely could have signed Blind (not ahead of you, obviously).

Who are these tier two and three clubs? I'd imagine most don't have the money to spend £30m on a single player without it wiping out the majority of their transfer funds.

Blind yes, Herrera i dont see handing in a transfer request to join spurs, Chelsea managed to take Willian from them even after he had a medical. LVG rejected Tottenham for us.

Given the choice between United/Chelsea and Spurs, no player will pick Tottenham. United and Chelsea are bigger clubs.

My location is a joke.

It's a snowball effect I think. One top player joins and others follow because a) they'll get great wages and b) clubs with top players usually compete for the trophies.

As ever, you won't get all your targets and I'm glad we're not going solely for star names. A good mix is what's required.

If you have money and a project that appeals to the player then it is possible for you to get them. City signing silva and toure in 2010 is a good example.

You happy with Welbeck?

I reckon he'll finally fulfil my prediction of becoming the new Henry.
Yep, I think he's stalled the last couple of years - he's got all the stuff and can put it together now.

Tell you what though, I said that back in April, and never in my wildest dreams would I have predicted the signings we have made this summer to be walking through the door, especially Falcao!

So the paper headline should be ......."falcao says no no , to more dough , and factor 4, at Monaco , to move to wilmslow , next door to Gary Barlow "

..... Er taxi !!!
