The next Ballon d'Or winner that isn't Cristiano or Leo

Nah, Muller isn't 'fashionable' enough to win it. He's not a player that everyone would appreciate and isn't flashy enough. Personally, I think he's a class act, though.

He is a player who is well appreciated by other players and coaches though and they do make up a sizeable element of the voting

The FIFA Ballon d'Or (French pronunciation: [balɔ̃ dɔʁ], "Golden Ball") is an association football award given annually to the male player who is considered to have performed the best in the previous year. It is awarded based on votes by coaches and captains of international teams, as well as journalists from around the world.

Great player in my opinion though and still only 25

Easy!

Gareth Bale.

A shame Ferguson only put in an insulting bid of only 5m for him.

I absolutely love Muller, one of my favourite players around but I would be astonished if he ever won it.

Danny Wellb.... er.... has someone already made that joke then?

The next 3 years or so will still be between Ronaldo and Messi.

So what will happen 5 years from now, I guess Neymar, Bale or Hazard would win it.

Unless something bizarre happens then its Messi and Ronaldo to share it between them over the next few years.

After that Bale, Hazard or Neymar probably.

In 4 years time, Ronaldo will be 33 and Messi will be 31. While Bale will be 29, Hazard 27 and Neymar will be 26.

I don't really mind the bias towards attacking players but FIFA does seem to play favourites sometimes and does seem to heavily favour the El Classico players (how many times have we laughed at their team of the year?). Neymar seems like the kind of player they love so I expect him to win 1 or 2. I actually thought he was overrated but he was really impressive in the WC given the shower he was playing with. He plays for Brazil, so will always get game time in the WC, is one of the most marketable players around and is the right age. Plus, he is actually very good. So of those 3, I'd expect Neymar to win it more.

Also, I did think about Suarez but in 4 years time he'll be 31 (and serving a 5 year sentence probably).

A keeper? Big Dave or Courtois if United or Chelsea have great defensive seasons in the PL & CL.

I don't think they will by the way, just throwing it out there.

Players realistically capable of winning it within a couple of years, if Ronaldo and Messi were to both perform poorly/suffer injuries, on evidence so far would be Neymar, Bale, Hazard, Suarez, Aguero, Reus, Di Maria plus a couple others. Certainly helps playing for a club like Madrid or Barca as well, hence if Aguero signed for one of them his chances would greatly increase. Others like Sterling could progress to be capable of winning it but not in the foreseeable future.

Sterling is gonna get nowhere near the Balon d'Or. Vastly overrated.

Slightly more talented and intelligent than the average flavour of the week fast English shortarse but still not vastly better than Walcott, Ox, etc that came before him.

Suarez and Neymar won't win it for as long as they remain in Messi's shadow at Barça, even if they're playing better than him, Messi and his reputation will still carry over. Same for Bale at Madrid with Ronaldo.

It's just gonna be the same two for at least the next few years at least. I think both might move on from their current clubs eventually.

By the time the Messi and Ronaldo duopoly has broken up, Bale will be hitting his prime.

So... Bale or Neymar.

Gonna go with Neymar. He's already a FIFA darling (whilst at the same time being brilliant and also already playing in Spain).

Most have been said already. I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Pogba and Gotze yet, though.

g Seems a lot harder for central midfielders to win it with the inflated goal and assist tallys these forwards are putting up. I don't think Gotze will ever hit such a level, either.

The ballon de or lost all its significance once the fifa took control of it, today is just a PR competition for de Barcelona and Real Madrid newspapers. The two giants of Spain are the cancer killing football.

Ballon'dor was not fool proof before FIFA took over.

Can't see anyone else having a look in for a good few years yet so that rules out the likes of Robben.

My money would be on Neymar or Bale. Would love to say Di Maria but the whole squad is going to have to seriously up its game to give him a fighting chance.

The heart says Müller, the brain says Neymar.

That's rich coming from a supporter of a team that has spent 7 billion just last summer.

I think it was a more innocent and down to earth award when France Football was in charge of it. Sometimes a player won it after a great season and sometimes was more like a recognition to a carrer, for example, Iniesta and Xavi would have won a few awards if FF was still in charge.

Fifa made it into a bizarre grammy-like award and on top of that you have newspapers like Marca, As and Sport who turn everything into a big Cabaré, "who cries the loudest between Real Madrid and Barcelona", that is the premise of the ballon d´or right now.

Hazard needs to find a bit more consistency if he's to ever win it. At his best he's probably third or fourth best player in the world behind Messi, Ronaldo and possibly Suarez, can be absoloutely unplayable at times, or else good but not eye catching.

The next winner will be the one who scores most though, that's what it comes down to in the end it seems.

They just happen to have the two biggest stars in the game.

Before FIFA took control it was voted for by journalists only, which meant that someone could blow everyone away and then they'd lose out because the journo's would vote based on an 8 game tournament over a month.

Manchester United doesn't have the communication and media structure of Real Madrid and Barcelona, not even close
