The New Official Republic of Ireland Football Thread

Frankly embarrassing. The rush to recontextualise things by the media after a meltdown over a 'horror tackle' that 'hospitalised' a player is pitiful. The women's game has a better chance of growing when it can be talked about on the same terms as the men's without having to tiptoe around things for fear of being called sexist. It was absolutely abysmal to call off a match 23 minutes in, worse to release a statement saying the reason was the game being 'overly physical' and now worse again in light of this footage. People clamoring to say it wasn't the only tackle, well it was the one that was described as the final straw and it's simply a nothing challenge. A bit late, and nothing more, you can argue that the irish tackle at the start of the clip is just as tough.

They simply didn't want injuries and shouldn't have arranged the friendly if they were that scared of it. It's a ridiculous story on every level, from the friendly happening, to the call off, to the mental gymnastics to justify the hysterics when it happened and does absolutely nothing for the women's game.

Were this the men's team I would say absolutely the same thing and be embarrassed by the decision.

If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen. Joke, obviously.

Christ we’ve all seen some men’s games where someone has broken a leg so badly that it’s hanging on by the sock. They played on

Have just seen the video. One player has basically stood on another's foot... this actually led to the game being abandoned?

This is a friendly though. Imagine 20 minutes into one of our pre-season games and two of our players are out of the game with possible serious injuries due to reckless tackles. I would hope the manager would think about calling the game off. It's not like there were fans watching that would be missing out, the whole reason for a friendly before a tournament is to get ready for the tournament. If half your team is going to get injured in the friendly, then it is doing more harm than good.

That tackle was apparently just one of many bad challenges. Two bookings in the first 20 minutes of a friendly match is very unusual, so would back up their version of events. The whole thing is a bit weird though. Pauw is under an unusual amount of (partially self-inflicted) pressure at the moment, so probably not thinking too clearly. I suspect this whole tournament is going to turn into a bit of a disaster for us.

How many occasions have you seen what looks like a nothing foul from one angle, look much worse from another, especially one more close-up? Everyone jumping to say that it isn't 'that bad'. She ended up in hospital for scans and in a protective boot for God's sake. None of us have seen any of the other tackles or incidents that led to the decision so perhaps, for once, we should all just shut up and believe those who were there? If the Colombian FA release the footage for the whole game and it turns out that it wasn't as bad as reported, I'm happy to say I'm wrong but the fact they've only leaked footage of the one tackle suggests they're not going to. I wonder why?

Didn't the Colombian manager say 'let them eat shit' when there were complaints. Charming if true.

The girls in green gave a decent account of themselves in their opening game, could have snatched a draw with a bit more luck.

Yeah also it was a friendly for a bit of fitness, right before the WC. Two yellow cards and your best player carted off to hospital within 20 mins. Why take the risk?

I’m sure it’s been confirmed that only England are guaranteed automatic qualification (makes sense as they are providing the bulk of the stadiums & facilities). The rest of the host nations will need to qualify.

we'll still miss out

I dare to UEFA to put the 5 host nations in the one qualifying group and watch the world burn.

Ah feck off, really?

Kenny out

Think it should just be given to England to host. Makes no sense for you guys, us(Scotland) and Wales to be partially hosting it too.

I'd have more respect if England just agreed to host it themselves. I mean, it'll be turned into an English tournament anyway, the same way Euro 2020 was, so they might as well just be honest about it.

if it was the GAA this is exactly what they'd do, and each match would have 2 legs and go to replays

F**k off like.

Ah here, surely there's a case for telling him to feck off
Play the long game, boys. He gets to 31 or 32, England will feck him off. Due to the Saudis lobbying for an international transfer system, we’ll swoop in. He declares for Ireland, mentions how proud his granny would be, posts stuff about the Ra on Twitter and then scores a hat trick in a Nations League game, instantly becoming our third best player ever. With at least 10 more years to jump the two in front.

Looks like Pauw might be on the outs for the Women anyway. No word on her contract yet and possibly falling out with players, on top of the Athletic reports hanging over her.

To be fair there's no need to treat Bellingham any different than anyone else, it's not like he pretended he wanted to play for Ireland, did in fact play for Ireland but suddenly declaring he was English and wanted to play for them instead.

Should bring in mandatory national service for English footballers who want Irish passports.

Would be another great move for an Irish international if it happens!

Yeah, fair play to him. This is the thread to celebrate him as well as covet him I suppose.
