The New Official Republic of Ireland Football Thread

Newstalk interviewed The Black Pearl before the game.

After sleeping on it I’ve come to the conclusion that we’re winning the World Cup, or euros. Or whatever that game was to qualify for.

An FAI Spokesperson said: “During the second half of Ireland Under-21s’ international friendly with Kuwait U22s in Austria on Monday evening, we can once again confirm that a racist remark was made to an Ireland substitute by a Kuwaiti player. The comment was heard by a number of Ireland players who reported this immediately to match officials as well as to members of the Ireland and Kuwait team staff.

"Due to the nature of the remark made and with no affirmative action in relation to it from our opponents, the game was abandoned. FAI staff and players were fully in support with this decision.”
"The FAI has offered its full and unequivocal support to the player who was subjected to racism and to his team-mates. We again confirm that we will be reporting this matter to FIFA and UEFA. The FAI does not tolerate any racism towards any of our players or staff."

FAI CEO Jonathan Hill said: “Our position here is very simple and unequivocal. We take a zero tolerance approach to any form of racism and we fully support the actions of Jim and his team. No player at any level of football should be exposed to this type of situation.”

Ireland U21s Head Coach Jim Crawford said: “I fully support the FAI’s stance to take this matter to FIFA and UEFA and hope now that the correct and appropriate action is taken. I’m proud of the stance our players and staff took to stand by one of our own. No-one should be subjected to racism, football’s beauty is its inclusivity and we won't let racism ruin our game.”

The Kuwait statement says the game was in Slovenia and the Irish says Austria. 'the feck is going on?

The q8 statement also says the game was abandoned for excessive roughness and tension reasons but didn’t mention anything about racism. Maybe the tension was caused by them being racist?
I wouldn’t trust those q8is as far as I could throw them anyway.

A few decent moves in the offing for the Irish lads.

I'm gonna say it, I'm not overly convinced by Collins. Wolves signed him for 25 mill after not a hell of a lot of appearances for Burnley. Any time I saw him play for Wolves in the first half of the season, I wasn't overly impressed. He never seemed very commanding at the back. They were struggling at the bottom of the table and he also got himself sent off v Man City with a ridiculous kung fu style tackle on Grealish. Sunday league shit.

Then Lopetegui comes in and one of the first things he does in the Jan transfer window is sign Craig Dawson from West Ham and drop Collins. And sure enough, Wolves become more solid at the back and comfortably move out of relegation trouble.

But obviously Brentford must rate him highly if they're after him, and if Wolves are holding out they obviously see a place for him in their squad.

He's a good ball player, I'm just never convinced with him defensively. Which is a problem obviously, for a defender!

Mad awkward. Bit niche though, surely no one under the age of 40 is getting the reference?

Is anyone going back and watching crappy parodies from 20 years ago? Even then they won't have seen the original ad.

It’s hardly niche is it? You google wazzup and it’s all over it and is surely a pretty big meme. It pops up all the time, it’s a classic.

I’m under 30 and saw the movie in theatres and remember the commercials too.

Maybe just maybe, I'm just not down with the kids. I was sure this was the first one which would have been in the Cinema in 2000. Was it 12A here then?

That’s so so bad. Although I guess that’s the point? More likely to go viral that way. Assuming there’s any point to this news going viral?

Anyhoo. Good on him. Good move.

Yeah, good side with what looks like a competent manager.

The movie scene was a rehash of a Budweiser ad. Which was a few years earlier, I think?
That Budweiser ad may have been the most viral piece of pre-social media advertising ever. It was everywhere for a while.

I also remember someone (possibly Coca-Cola) trying to subsequently emulate it cringily by producing an ad using "Chihuahua" as a catch phrase. Quite sad really.

Lots of Irish players getting PL moves or moves to better clubs within the PL. Promising.

Mikey Johnston out of the September qualifiers. :(

Disappointing because he's been probably the only bright spark in what has been a fairly sterile attacking threat. Not that I'm expecting much from these qualifiers anyway.

In other domestic news, Rovers were terrible on Tuesday night - I do wonder if Bradley's tenure might come to an end at the end of this season. Pat's got a lifeline last night with a late goal. Dundalk on tonight against a side called Bruno's Magpies, I saw it on Twitter and genuinely thought they were referring to Newcastle.
