The New Official Republic of Ireland Football Thread

Game of opinions and all that but I think we know all we need do about Jack Byrne. The right type of player, but he’s not good enough to influence games, even at this relatively low level.

He's done better in an Irish shirt than anyone else we've tried in that position of late. Genuinely think he'd have been a hundred times better than Smallbone in that position on Friday (although that wouldn't have been difficult). I don't think Jack is a better play than Smallbone, but he's a better fit for our team right now than anyone else.

Anyway, it's not going to happen so it's a pointless argument.

He's not even consistent in a Rovers shirt according to my mates who go. He can dazzle, but he can also do nothing. He's not what we need.

Apparently Cullen, the midfield lynchpin, had a 57% pass completion last night. I don’t even…

Where do you go with that? Jack Byrne would be even less as he's a bit more advanced.

Kenny has made very little progress and failed to cement even that small amount of progress. US holding our own against France and folding against Greece is typical of us this last decade or so.

Jack Byrne being our new Wes Hoolahan is a good metric of the downward slide were on.

Someone who could hang onto the ball and pick a pass wouldn't have gone astray but yeah it was just bad performance all round.

All round is exactly right. They were lacking in almost every way you could think of.

Sounds like you're a real expert. I bow down to your mates' vastly superior knowledge. ;)

Yiz all don't like Jack, fair enough, but until we get someone in the team who can do what he does best, we're going to continue to struggle to score against the minnows, let alone anyone half decent.

Are you new here?

Not new enough to know that getting the Holy Trinity of Irish posters to agree on anything is some feat. I'll take it.

Byrne isn't even the best playmaker in LOI, but it's a bit late and a bit low to be capping Forrester at this stage

Get ta feck ya wee shit.

We're not your ditzy hipster mates, who would be impressed you knew a Shamrock Rovers footballer.

Took you a while to come up with that second line, did it?

Yeah, I'm working, have a mortgage to pay there Little Lord Fontleroy.

Get a Mars bar or something into you and get them sugar levels sorted ya moody brat.

I really think we're suffering at all levels the past few years. Even the years of Dundalk getting a shot at Europa are well gone.
You could say that they're not getting the same chances to develop in PL teams like the past (Keane(x2), Duff, Brady etc), as PL teams are finding better value abroad.
But honestly, I don't think the base quality is there, and we're going to have wait a while to fix that.

We've a population of 5.5/6m, it should be enough to get a good pyramid (like rugby has done), but the whole FAI shenanigans have probably set us back a decade, maybe even more.

Yep, it's hugely structural.

It was a shambles when I played, and the GAA was only slightly better and Rugby wasn't an issue. The latter two have exploded since.

It's more than the FAI shenanigans, it's the lack of an overall structure. The FAI, the LOI and schoolboy football are all separate. It's a madness.

As a Rovers fan, I watch them week in, week out. I go to every Irish home game. So yeah, the whole posh twat thing is funny and all (despite it being wildly untrue), but not when it's used to invalidate my opinions on football. It's a little tiresome to be honest.

Anyway, it's Fauntleroy you illiterate tosser xo

I'm a club secretary of a cycling club, and there's a similar level of disfunction. It's incredibly frustrating how the managing bodies are just left to run themselves without any accountability. It inevitably leads to failure.

Have a little read back and see who invalidated who first there petal. What did you expect in return?

Don't you live northside near the coast or somewhere like that? That's some dedication then

Very frustrating. And undermines so much of the huge amount of work done mostly by amateurs.

I expected and had hoped for the original response, not the edited in second line. :smirk:

Northside!? Jesus focking Christ.

Anyway, mostly watch Rovers on the auld tv streams, but I do get out to Tallaght as often as I can.

I've had a few WhatsApp messages saying he's getting sacked tomorrow. Unsure how reliable.

He'll only get sacked if there's a better alternative available.
Otherwise he's there til the end of the campaign.

I like Kenny's vision but I don't think we've the players for it.
We're poor at keeping the ball and creating chances, so that means our only option is to be hard to beat.

We concede too many chances and goals under Kenny and we'll never score enough, so we're destined to have poor results.

We're lacking a goal scorer, a creative no 10/AM and pace in wide areas besides Ogbene.

I'd like us to go back to 4-2-3-1 formation and hard to break down. We've good defenders and GK. I don't see the point in 3-5-2. You just get outnumbered in wide areas.
Often I see our wingbacks receive the ball and they've no option in front of them.

I do think Kenny's been unlucky with freak goals and COVID and a poor group of players.
I like his positive attitude and he's built a young squad.
He might get fired and someone else reap the benefits of his work.

I think there's talent coming also.

Turned to the auld fella the other night when Chippy said he doesn't "know much" about Mikey Johnston and said he has to go.

I'm old and multi-tasking. It can be days between thoughts. I did well there.

We are the opposite of each other, I got out of Tallaght and go back as infrequently as possible.

His disdain and disinterest were all he brought the last few years.

I'd give my right arm for a 25 year old Wes Hoolahan in this side.

Or sacrifice Smallbone

We are gonna have Big Sam by the end of the week aren't we?

The just subbed off a pensioner, he couldn't even finish the first half. And we're struggling to break them down.

He needs to go, simple as.
Yeah, unless there's a change in system in second half that leads to a clear improvement and some goals, he needs to go. Even if it gets to 2 or 3 nil, while the performance remains similar.
