The New Official Republic of Ireland Football Thread

I still say that I far, far prefer this to a Martin O'Neill style grinding side and can totally stomach this is if leads us to continuing to transition into an actual team.
He’s in charge 3 years and he hasn’t improved anything. Absolutely shocking tonight against an average team.

You're deluded if you think things haven't improved.

Offers work rate, defensive stability, good crosses and tenacity.

Doesn't offer much movement off the ball, his legs are gone, gave the ball away in a dangerous area at the back and nearly put a corner out for a throw in on the far side.

P33 W9 D11 L13 under Stephen Kenny.

Its a terrible record. No deny it.

Out of another tournament but we play the ball on the ground at the back a lot more . Great improvement indeed
9 wins in 33 by him now .

Gave the ball away once.
Yet offered a lot more on the ball.
But each to their own.

Dreadful game. Slow, poor passing and lazy play. No urgency, no width, nothing in midfield.

Greeks got ahead and went down at every opportunity, wasted as much time as possible.

And look at the fecking players he has at his disposal.
Context is not your friend in this argument, and unfortunately for you context is key.

A young team growing all the time and playing the right way, rather than sitting back and hoping for a counter with a long ball.

Sheer sh*t on a stick from our donut team. Sadly, we’ll just have to wait for quality players to emerge and fill that midfield hole.

Shite. Utter shite. That's us fecked with nothing to look forward to.

The really frustrating thing about us is that we game-raise against the best sides (but not by enough to actually win) and then turn to shite against the sides who you'd give us a chance against.

I was hoping that we'd build on our excellent performance against France, but as usual it feels like one step forward and two steps back.

And while we are definitely doing a better job of keeping the ball on the deck than we were previously, we still don't look well coached. Our off the ball movement was atrocious today and you won't get far as an aspiring keep-ball side without that. Poor showing.

Hope Doherty never plays for us again. Pure shite. We need a left back too.

What areas ?
We are reliant on goals from set pieces. Our midfield was destroyed tonight.
Get Kenny out .
The thing is though, it doesn’t really matter who the manager is in respect of the main issue affecting the Irish team for the last decade or more - the sheer lack of quality in central midfield.

Cullen was one of the best players for the runaway best team in the Championship just finished. He'd walk into the Greek team so I don't think it's just a personnel issue- I'm starting to have doubts about the coaching staff; there is no lack of endeavour out there but it just looked like 11 lads who had never played together this evening, no cohesion whatsoever.

Playing the right way ? They played like they just met each other for the 1st time . Our midfield might not have been there tonight . They were shocking .

Same shit from Kenny. Zero attack intent. Zero penetration.Zero ideas.
Yeah we can pass a bit better but his report card is atrocious and for me he should be sacked after we draw 1-1 against Gibraltar at home on Monday after 900 sideways passes

That post would be no less accurate if the last three words were deleted.
Yeah but it’s the midfield where the lack of quality has been most noticeable and most keenly felt.

Forget it, buddy. I'm a big Kenny fan but it's shit or get off the pot time. No defence for that performance. None of the stuff I thought we were building on display tonight, no bravery on the ball, no increase in tactical awareness or ability to adapt in game. Shocking, depressing stuff. This was Greece, tier 3 in the Nations league, they outplayed us all over the pitch. Every player bar Bazunu exposed to some extent, Kenny powerless to react to obvious tactical problems. The beginning of the end.

Kenny is hardly the only manager who can play passing football, for all I've wanted to give him a chance, I've always been a bit mystified how intertwined his employment and Ireland's prospective style of play have become. How many years doesn't count as giving him a chance at this stage?

Random fact. We haven’t beaten a team with the same seeding as Greece in our group, away from home, since 2010. 13 years ago. Generally agree with what you’re saying but the result alone isn’t some kind of historic low point. If anything it’s fairly standard.

EDIT: Might actually be 2003? Was on Second Captains earlier. Had a few beers and memory is fuzzy.

Woeful, showing no signs of improvement, nothing to be gained by keeping him on.

We don't have the players there is little he can do with this team

We have a good keeper, Nathan Collins is a potential great so is Ferguson but bar that we are so average.

The midfield especially is poor and together with the full backs create nothing at all

If only we had held onto Grealish and Rice we might have done something.

Clearly improved? What are you talking about? Specifically where have we improved? Have you seen his record? Just getting outplayed easily by average teams. He needs to leave.

He has a below average team

As usual with these things, it is presented as some sort of binary solution. Either stick with Steven Kenny, the only man to ever get the Irish playing football, even though he’s managing a team of semi-pro cloggers, or go back to your caveman, Packie-kicking-it-into-the-clouds stuff.

And in terms of people saying that the quality of the players is so low that it’s impossible for him to do anything, I suspect not that many other third seeds will have a keeper who was a PL first choice until last month, two centre halves who’ll be in the PL next season, an experienced PL right back, a midfielder promoted to the PL as one of the best players in the championship and a young striker who’ll probably go for £80m if he has another big season. Every team around our level is fundamentally flawed. Framing our flaws as so fatal as to absolve Kenny of any responsibility for results is far too generous. IF there’s been progress - which I think there has been, for whatever it’s worth - the direction of travel doesn’t exactly make success look inevitable if only we just persever with him.
