The natural successor: Has Neymar blown it?

He really regressed this season, been by far his worst season in the 8 years. Think he'll fade away soon. Poor career choice to move to PSG.

Just caught the last few minutes of Milan vs Salinaterna. It was end to end very similar to a Premiership game, was impressed by Milan Đurić, reckon there would be a few bargains to be had from this relegation bound side.

Should he leave PSG at this point ? It's unlikely he's going to win the champions league there.

He has already won it once, I don't think he cares much about winning it again.

The entire point of the ''PSG project'' in his career was for him to be the main man and win them the CL.

Not only is Mbappe viewed as the bigger star now but despite PSG's spending, they haven't been able to pull it off.

I guess he can still have an impact on this World Cup.

Doesn't matter.

Injuries have derailed him and have caught up to him. He looks a step slow.

Shouldn't be a big problem. Today's players have the biggest technology, medical care and nutrition help in the world.

That doesn't matter at all.

Once your body fails you in top level sport, there is no recovery.

He most certainly is.

Brazil's likely record goal-scorer. CL top goal-scorer during the MSN treble season. Numerous memorable performances for club and country. Plenty of other accolades.

Yeah definitely overrated.

But I am pretty sure you and other Spurs fans on here were arguing Kane is a better footballer, so I will bow out from this discussion.

Also football looks like a chore to him now maybe he has genuinely lost all passion for it and isnt the first brazilian to have his peak years early and have a huge fall off. Injuries sure but I believe mentally he just is interested in other things and doesn't show joy to play like he used to.

For PSG, all the players don't seem to care
I bet I saw Messi and Neymar show more desire for Argentina and Brazil. Watch the last Copa and see what Mesi and Neymar were doing for their NT and compare to PSG
Wijnaldum Verrati and Ramos all look better when not wearing a PSG jersey.
That is why Mbappe should exit quickly and not waste his peak years in that circus show

I think Ashley Cole was a guy who understood it well then.

He gave his peak years to chelsea, then moved to Roma, when it didn't work out he went to the states, and then on to Derby.

Not saying Neymar should do that, but players can often fail to realize the real level they're playing at.

Has anyone seen his documentary on Netflix? Is it worth watching?

It is good if you're looking to know the story of his life and some interesting behind the scenes things.

If you're looking for an in-depth analysis on his career, that's not the place to go, but i'd say it's worth a watch and if you don't like it, just stop.

Sounds a lot like Rashford.

The sad thing about Neymar is after Ronaldo and Messi he is easily the most talented of the past 15 years. I remember watching this guy at Santos and being absolutely blown away and jaw dropped at every clip and game. Then he Moves to Barca and proves his quality yet again.

However his move to PSG has been and absolute disaster, injury after injury and far too inconsistent. He reminds me of the futebol version of Kyrie Irving, left LeBron (mess) to go have his team so he can be the man but the problem is he isn’t the man.

Back to those Santos’s days though…man him and Ganso were some of the most exciting young players I had seen.

Is it still on Netflix ? I’ll give it a watch for sure

Well it depends on how you choose to view him. For example :

Competitior/natural successor to Ronaldo and Messi? Then yes he is very overrated.

As a footballer though? He is anything but overrated. Many world class seasons, top goals scorer in the history of Brazil (granted a over whelming majority is from friendly games) Key player in a CL winning team.

Neymar is far more talented than Irving is and nowhere near as problematic in the dressing room.

But yes, his move to PSG failed.

The injuries have taken their toll on him.

It's a shame as he is one of the last truly great technical players who like to put on a show and demonstrate their skills. His diving and sister shagging made me not view him in as positive light as I probably should have but it is what it is. Great player none the less, could and probably should have been greater than he was but you could say that for many players.

As I said in the Messi thread with Mbappe leaving them it should allow the team to have a more balanced setup with him being the focus of the attack. It feels like he has undeperformed based on his talent and he also comes as not the best professional, so he needs to start taking his club carreer more seriously from now on. It's just not the fact PSG hasn't won a UCL, a lot of good teams don't win it but the manner in which they tend to go out.

He has earned a lot of money (just behind Ronaldo and Messi), and score alot of goals for Brazil in many international friendlies.

His peak was from year 14-18 (age 22 to 26), when he consistently hit nearly 30 goals and around 10 assist per season. His best season is probably 14-15, when he won CL for Barca scoring 10 goals in the CL campaign.

But ever since his moved to PSG, it started to go downhill. He was always out injured/partying/vacation/visiting his sister, although he still performs well on the pitch, he is unable to reproduce the total output due to his rather limited number of appearance (average plays only 29 games per season).

This season he is 30, he has 4 goals 5 assist in 19 games. Even a 37 year old declining Ronaldo playing in disjointed team and tougher league does far better than him in terms of total output.

I think he is done.

What a disappointment of a career. He had unreal potential, and I mean legit unreal. He’s had some very high moments, but for what he should have been, he didn’t come close imo.

At the end of the day, his move to PSG proved to be a career-killer instead of the recognition booster that propelled Zlatan Ibrahimovic into something else. Speaking of impact upon the game, it's safe to say that Robert Lewandowski has been the worthy successor to Ronaldo and Messi in terms of pure dominance and ability to create something out of nothing.

I will let Kincade speak for me about Neymar in 11 words.

Individually, in isolation, he has/had crazy attributes. But if you're talking about trying to build a team around him, getting a manager who can improve him but convince him to sacrifice certain individual impulses for team success, good luck.

In a way, this mirrors the Phil Jackson triangle offense implementation with the Bulls at the expense of MJ's scoring output. Different sports, but systems are arguably even more important in an 11 man sport. He's a solo act and probably is more suited to an individual sport. And the off field drama is just too excessive.

Well said, he should never have left Barca. That team would have won 1 more CL at least and many more La Ligas

Probably due a title change. He doesn't look like the player who's about to take on the mantle anymore.
