The natural successor: Has Neymar blown it?

Money got the best of him, right from his shady Barca move. I also feel him playing in the same team as Messi worked against him. Should have joined a club where he would have been the main star player.

In the public perception? a bit, yet in the field? Messi is the type of player that enhaces your game, he would have help him (like he actually did in barca) to gain greater heights. He should have stayed longer, win more, even get better in terms of a more composed and calm game and maybe later leave. He left too soon yet at the same time, now we all know what freaking mess was Barca internally, so that didn't help either.

He was also offered a boat load of money at PSG - 220m buyout? He could have chosen better football clubs tbh but no, he had to go after money. Such a waste.
Not sure at that time what are his options. real Madrid ? Not a chance. EPL Big 6 ? Bayern Munich ? Wouldn't pay that much for him even if the fee is slashed in half? Juventus ? Seems like PSG is the only club willing and could afford paying for his transfer fee ?

MSN still the best forward line I've ever seen.

Neymar was an incredible footballer. Ironically, the carefree nature in which he played rarely results in a long career or wise career moves. He just wanted to play football and enjoy himself doing it, we need more of that in the game - instead of the little machines that Pep creates.

It's definitely unfair to call Neymar a failure for not living up to Messi and Ronaldo, but considering how he was seen as a given for next in line after them, in the long run he's definitely been surpassed, at least by Lewandowski, maybe by Mbappé, Benzema. By Modric maybe? Will he leave a greater legacy than Suarez? Or Kroos, Salah? Spending years out to lunch really has him closer to the Hazard/Bale tier than might have been predicted even while he was at PSG.

It's not a question of if he had more or less fouls, the thing it's that some of those fouls ended really bad for him with really bad injuries.

Sometimes luck it's not on your side, Messi got lucky quite a number of times, even when just a kid...he also has another build, closer to those of Romario, Maradona, Tevez, Aguero, bulky little fellas, that obviously helps too and Ney was more on the slim side of body type, not extremely lightweight a la Saviola or Aimar, yet not as stocky and closer to a tank like many of the mentioned.

Certainly one of his metatarsal fractures occured while running, as did one of his bad ankle injuries where he was tackled but not especially hard and nowhere near the ankle that turned badly. Id really have to know how many injuries were the result of deliberate bad challenges before i could say he was 'kicked to bits' any more than any other player.

In any case, i dont want to continue a hypothetical about neymars injuries - overall I just dont liked the type of player he represented, all flash and diving, then he saw money and took it, willingly going to a subpar league at 25, and certainly didnt have a constant stream of love from psg fans where his perceived effort and commitment was concerned.

I cant talk about him as some sort of unfulfilled heir or legend, when No, he didnt have the appetite for it.

To each to his own regarding taste in players, you don't have to like him at all.

Yet he was quite a targeted player due to his style and had bad luck/timing and even some really bad intentioned fouls on him that in time brings problems. Also injuries not due to direct fouls, are injuries at the end of the day, his carreer was quite hamppered with any type of them.

I won't go as far as not having the appetite and he is not alone in terms of also living the life, even among players from his period.

Also like it was said above, his carreer it's still quite stellar, same happens with Ronaldinho, there is a perception due to their ability that they didn't make it as far as they could and they still did it grand, VERY grand in fact.
Also that as far as they could includes so many things outside of the reach of any player, Maradona could have had a greater carreer, even Messi if we just use what they've done and correct a couple of stuff that wasn't that great, not few times that stuff was even out of their hands.

What truly fecked him was the foot injury before the 2018 world cup. What he did to come back from that in time to play in Russia permanently compromised his body

How much money has he made out of the Saudi stint? Did he do anything at all in that league?
He milked the Sauds for roughly 200 million pounds (untaxed) across 18 months in which he played 7 (seven) games and scored 1 (one) goal. I struggle to find words to describe this robbery
