The MMA thread

What a farce. I love watching his fights but at least honour your responsibilities - I respect Khabib for doing it and always acting correct and decent.

Khabib doesn't think he's going to make weight. He's stressed.

Dana hates the idea of a 165 division because he thinks people in the 155 and 170 would go up/down to get easier fights. But that's precisely what he did with the women's 125.

You'd also think an organisation that rapidly hands out and strips interim & full belts to sell fights would be okay with adding another set.

They should force him to cut weight one day, the fat cnut. People are almost dying cutting weight ffs.

Could've always been the plan by Dana to not have them talking over and through each other again cos it wasn't nice in NY.

Hey! A school mate of mine just asked two questions. DIdn't even know he was there. Class

Where on earth did you pull that from?

You could see it in how annoyed he was and how eager he was to get out of there. He left sooner than he would have had McGregor been on time.

McGregor was about half hour late. Khabib said before the press conference that he wasn't going to wait about. Also, Khabib didn't look annoyed, he just wasn't putting up with the usual McGregor bullshit. Also Khabib was 166 on Tuesday -- he's making weight.

Was he half an hour late? Jesus, I didn't notice.

He even admitted to being angry, but alright. :)

McGregor is surely telling porkies about earning $50 million for this fight on Saturday. I’d be surprised if he banks one third of that when it’s all said and done. Illegal streams will put a huge dent in any prospective PPVs.

He said he was angry at Conor in general. Like when he was asked about what he said about Dagestani people and his family. I understand it, but still, -- I don't think Khabib made a right descison to leave. Just plays into Conors hands -- at least the perception of the fans.

Conor has a punchers chance in this fight. A very good punchers chance, but a punchers chance nonetheless. He either compromises Khabib early, or stops Khabib early, or he is eventually gonna get taken down, and brutalized.

The only thing that would surprise me in this fight, is if Conor won via stuffing Khabibs take downs consistently throughout the entire fight, stopping him late or winning a decision. Conor winning via early stoppage or decision because he hurt him badly early, or Khabib via gnp/submission/decision due to gnp wouldn't shock me at all. That said, I'm probably 80:20 Khabib on this fight. Conor winning early wouldn't shock me, but I expect Khabib to win in dominant fashion.

I find it hard to see how Mcgregor can turn things around if the fight starts going against him. Even if he manages to survive being taken to the ground he'll come back up absolutely exhausted, a big problem for an explosive striker with well documented energy issues. The more tired he gets the less danger there is in his punches and the easier he'll be taken down again. He won't be able to use kicks tactically as he did against Diaz either. Even if he isn't finished I could easily see the fight becoming an avalanche of takedown after takedown.

At the moment I'd be 60/40 in favour of Khabib but if he scores an early takedown I'd immediately jump to 80/20.

I'll put money on Conor getting the KO. I think he will have his chances, and he rarely needs many to take advantage.

If Khabib tries to strike with Conor, he gets KO'd.

Khabib will have to be very careful closing the distance to get the takedown. If he shoots from far away, Conor gonna evade him easily and probably hurt him too.

So he needs to get into striking range first, but Conor is the master of using reach to his advantage. Khabib will definitely eat some shots trying to get in, but will be enough to hurt him and slow him down?

Even if Khabib can get a hold on Conor, he needs to be very careful not to eat some vicious elbows to the temple while pushing against the cage.

Then, even if he gets the takedown, there are no guarantee he can keep Conor down (he failed to keep Iaquinta down). Back up again. Second round starts on the feet too. So Conor might have enough chances to catch him.

For Khabib to win, his obvious path is to keep Conor on the ground and GnP the feck out of him for the first 2 rounds at least. I don't think Conor could come back from that. Also he can get a submission probably at any given time if in control (but he wants to punish Conor).

Saturday anything can happen, is the only truth. That and that I'll be nervous as feck. Cucuy and Conor hopefully end up victorious!

Real talk - if Conor connects with any of his punches in the first round it could wind up being a very quick fight. If Khabib manages to take Conor down it will be hard for Conor to get back up. I know he thinks his ground game is underrated but he's going against the best in the business so I can't see Conor having much of a chance after round one or possibly up to the half way mark of round two. He will gas at some point just as he did in Nate 1 and if that happens I can see Khabib absolutely mauling him on the ground for the rest of the night.

Are you redefining terms here?

Khabib has no chance standing; Conor has no chance if it goes to the floor.

That's not a punchers chance!

I think people will be surprised by the gap in quality between the two fighters, a bit like Alvarez McGregor which was up there with one of the most one sided title fights ever. I just don't see McGregor not knocking Khabib out in the first round.

I agree .
Conor is world class fighting while moving backwards v Khabib who only moves forwards in a straight fecking line with zero head movement.

Khabib doesn't finish fights, Khabib would have to take him down for 5 straight rounds for Conor to stand no chance? They're stood up at the end of every round too lol.

Nah I reckon he's waiting for this fight to be over. If Conor wins he'll give him the chance of being a 3 weight world champion. If he loses he'll move up and open the 165lb division. I think his ideal scenario is Nate wins and Conor vs. Nate opens it up, if not then maybe GSP is an option. I don't think they want to waste the beginning of the division on Nate vs. Dustin even though it does make sense.

Isn't that more on the fighters? Dana isn't forcing them to cut weight, they use the size difference to their advantage. Whilst he's not discouraging it he's not forcing anyone in to any weight class to my knowledge.

Agreed. It'll start to look like the first Nate fight if he doesn't land something early.

Not a huge UFC fan but a McGregor one, that's the only reason I watch MMA.

Reason I'm not a huge UFC fan is exactly what this match is: One man wanting to fight standing up and the other looking to dry hump on the ground. I can't stand UFC when it's two dudes who spend most the match on the ground, if I wanted to watch that shit I'd watch WWE. None bias rule, but there should be a time short time limit of how long you can be on the ground/against the cage before the ref breaks it up. Would be proper Ultimate Fighting and not Intimate Wrestling.

But hey, that's just my opinion.

Surely kickboxing or muay thai would be more for you then? The whole point of MMA is it's mixed martial arts so multiple disciplines. It seems you only like certain ones (which is fair enough no problem with that) and then you won't be a huge fan of MMA.

They do break up fights if they're against the cage as well with no action, it happens all the time. Watch the Woodley vs. Till fight anytime they got near the cage it was split up...probably to soon really.
