The MMA thread

Ugh. Rome is a legendary wummish sport radio show host. Not sure how it would work with Rogan. If true, I'm willing to bet Ari Emanuel is behind it.
I think we could be heading towards three man commentary teams, something like Jim Rome plus two from Rogan and/or ex fighters (Stann, Hardy, Florian, Cormier, Cruz). Hardy said recently that his new contract has him doing more work in the US.

I reckon Jim Rome will be there to give it a mainstream feel, introduce the card and fighters but ultimately, because he knows feck all about MMA, the analysis side of it will be left to the colour commentators.

He needs to fight TJ again though. He certainly didn't won that fight (a draw at best).

If he starts calling the shots a la Conor would be quite shitty, specially if he starts picking easy fights. (A semi retired Faber and a easy pick on Garbrandt (according to many))

It's up for debate but I have to disagree. Cruz landed more significant strikes (head, body and legs), he landed more takedowns and had complete octagon control. TJ was coming forward a lot but that doesn't mean he was winning the fight. The fight was a long time ago so I can't remember how I scored the rounds but I remember at the time thinking it would be crazy for anyone watching tat to score 3 rounds for a TJ win or even a draw... it was 3-2 or 4-1 Cruz.

Maybe my mind is cloudy as we are nearly a year removed from the fight but I'm pretty certain it was a clear cut win for Cruz.

In terms of picking fights, I'm sure the UFC are also gunning for these ones Cruz has been engaged in. Trilogy fight with Faber makes sense for them and now a mouthy upcoming 'star' who's in fairness created a lot of buzz for the fight. TJ doesnt do much talking and him joining the MMAAA hasnt helped his cause. I'd like to see Lineker get a shot, the man first needs to drop those burgers though.

I think your mind is a little bit cloudy at least :D, specially if you think Cruz landed more significant strikes to the legs. TJ almost chopped one of Cruz legs...

But to the bottom of it, it was a super close fight with no clear winner. When that's the case, you go with the Champion. That's how it should be. The challenger needs to make a statement to take the belt.

Would you have given the belt to Gustafsson? You could argue he did more than what Cruz did to deserve the victory, but I was glad they gave it to Jones. Maybe Gus won the fight (for a little margin), but the didn't do enough to win the belt, and you see it was the right decision looking for how he did on his next fights.

If TJ were a marketable guy, he would still be the champ.

Anyway, it seems TJ made peace with it so i should too.

Looking forward for tomorrow fights.

I had TJ winning that fight too

Was pretty surprised so many agreed with the decision after the fight

Also I don't think TJ was anywhere near his best that night, although that was most likely down to Cruz

Cruz should win handily enough via decision against Cody...but the TJ v Lineker fight is tough to call

Oh yeah I remember the leg kicks now haha but I still had Dom win that fight 3-2. Our of curiosity, what rounds would you gave TJ?

I think Gus did amazing but Jones won that fight.

Cruz is destroying Garbrandt in the build up to this fight. Such an underrated and undervalued personality/character, he's been brilliant at selling his fights since he got healthy again. Been great to have him back healthy, takes the division to the next level.

There trashtalk during the Sacramento card was so weird. I don't get the "Cruz is brilliant at it" he's alright and has some good lines but I think he benefits that most people in his division who he has fought are just terrible. Faber got the better of him most times in their most recent fight. These 2 have done a good job selling the fight though and are in fairness getting some mainstream attention.

Don't get the problem people have with Nunes not getting loads of coverage. Cos a) She is the main character in all the Embedded basically b) Ronda returning is huge and a huge selling point. I've never understood why people have this weird thing against UFC with selling their fights with the most marketable asset on the card. Ronda is more popular than Nunes (and every other UFC fighter not named McGregor probably) so why not sell it as her coming back? It would be more strange if they didn't.

Hendricks weigh in stuff is a joke, should either move up a weight or be cut. He's looked poor in his last few fights anyway.

Not sure who wins the main event, if it's Ronda it'll be early but I think she may struggle.

Brilliant at selling his fights, not just trash talk. Since he returned at the start of this year he's got me pumped to watch all three of his fights. Dillashaw/Cruz was a great fight IMO. Dillashaw/Faber had great build up due to their history and this fight with Garbrandt has had some great build too. "most people he's fought in this division are terrible" is directed at trash talking and not the actual fighters surely?

Obviously Rousey is the main draw but bigging Nunes up a bit more has its advantages too. Imagine Rousey loses the fight and quits (which certainly isn't impossible). At that point they'd likely regret Nunes not having the same profile that Holm did when she beat Ronda. It's not like she doesn't have a story to sell either given she's the first openly gay champion. I don't think boosting her profile would hinder the promotion of this fight either.

Yeah he's fought some of the best in his career definitely not doubting that. It was targeted at trash talk. Although saying that he has defended the belt against an over the hill Faber and Garbrandt is a few fights to early to be fighting for a title. It is pretty clear he doesn't seem to want the TJ Rematch at the moment.

I do like the guy by the way just don't think he's this excellent savage at trash talk. He comes out with some good lines I'll definitely agree with that but the weird Sacramento face off thing him and Garbrandt both seemed awful. In fairness to Cruz is doesn't help when others are so bad at it he really is feeding off scraps with some of the stuff Garbrandt and also Dillashaw came out with.

I don't know I think it's fair what they'e done. Ronda is arguably their biggest star and is the main event on this card. She is back after a huge lay off and attracts most fans to the sport whether casual viewers or die hard viewers. For me they'd be stupid to sell it any other way than her return. Nunes is on the poster and is the main attraction of embedded stuff and does have air time.

If she does beat Rousey then I'm sure they will hype her up more as she'd be the undisputed Number 1 champion. The belt has been like a hot potato the last year or so though so maybe they're being cautious.

I think it depends how they promoted her. They've only got limited resources and there's so many hours in the day. The justification for them is that out of everyone on the card Ronda sells. I think more people would buy fights on her return than watch a champion just cos she has an interesting back story. Like I said if she wins I imagine they'll show her store more in her next fight as she is the new queen of that division really and would of beaten 2 pioneers of womens MMA back to back.

fecking hyped for tonight!

What are people predicting?

Smolka
Kim
Dillashaw
Cruz
Rousey

Main one I'm curious about is main event. Should be a good card though.

Oh I don't think he's excellent at trash talking either, he's good but not one of the greats. I just feel he's slightly underrated in it though and as a personality. There's more interest in the division IMO with him as the champion.

I have the same for the main card. Lineker is on a tear and I still need some convincing that TJ is as good as some people believe. I'm leaning towards TJ but he's been knocked out by Dodson before so it wouldn't surprise me if Lineker landed one of his big bombs and knocked him out.

I've got Cruz but again, it's tough to discount the power that Garbrandt has and his victory over Almeida was outstanding considering how good Almeida has been. No chance I can bet against Cruz though, different level of fighter IMO.

Kim hopefully in dominating fashion, love this dude.

Rousey in one round. Nunes was rag dolled at times by Zingano, if Ronda get's a hold of her, I think this finishes very quickly. It honestly wouldn't surprise me to see Ronda come out and try to prove a point and stand with Nunes though. I guess we'll find out tonight.

Dom Cruz trash talk is different to McGregor. Whereas McGregor takes the piss out of his opponents, Cruz makes them feel childish and beneath him. That kind of talk can easily rile someone up. Especially someone with small man syndrome like Cody.

That line: "I bought a house off of beating people from your team" was pure class.

Don't know if you're a gambling man but if so Sky Bet have a price boost on Ronda Round 1 by submission 11/4.

I've put a 10 pound acca on it with Cruz, Dillashaw, Magny and Thatch all to win. Returns 200 quid.

Agree re other points as well. I think it makes for an interesting card, there could be a few surprises.

Yeah it seems to rile up the likes of Garbrandt and worked on TJ as well. If Cody comes in swinging for a KO aimlessly I think Cruz eases it really, he may land one but plenty have tried and failed in the past. Garbrandt isn't anywhere neae the ability of most of them really.

Hadn't seen that, may stick a few quid on it later mate. Somebody tried to talk me into betting on them not to touch gloves which is 1/3 but I'm not crazy enough to bet big money on two fighters not touching gloves, even though it'd be a surprise if Ronda did.

What time are we expecting the ronda fight

Around 5am. I'm pumped for this card but no way I can be stupid enough to stay up and watch it as I'm off for an all dayer for New Years Eve. Will have to be one where I wake up at 8 in the morning and watch the entire event while avoiding contact with the internet and human race

You can tell he is completely in Garbrand's head. The latter will probably come out and go for an early knock out, much as Aldo did with McGregor.

Well they don't pick the winner at the end.. Are you suggesting they score any close rounds to the champion?

Why not just score who you thought won each round and then go with whatever the scorecards give you at the end? If the judges thought Cruz won 3 rounds to 2 then it's fair he gets the win, whether it was a close fight or not.

I think the clearest rounds were 4 and 5 for TJ. Having said that you can definitely give the first 3 to Cruz. Similar with Jones/Gus, the clear rounds were 4 and 5 for Jones, but you can make the case for Gus winning 3-2.

Around midnight New York time.

Cheers lads.

Doesn't look like the stream i use to watch on, will show this event, so I'd be super happy if any of you could share a river with me in pm.

Strange start to the night

Defo should be DQ. He was technically a downed opponent

That was strange...

Lookng forward to Big Burger vs. Magny, wonder what state the fatty will be in.

Trying to figure out how slow my stream may be. I'm in the first round of Thatch v Price?

Lovely stuff. Missus' flight was cancelled earlier and won't be here until Sunday now so I'll be watching this all night and football all day tomorrow

Doubt I'm gonna last too long tonight so will be watching most of it on the morning

This is getting silly... not even 2 minutes, and 3 eyepokes

There will be an interesting story behind the Goldberg thing

Dana and him were quite close I thought and he fought quite hard to keep him a few years ago when Goldie was looking to move on

Could well be the new owners who have made the call

Rogan will almost definitely follow.

I think Anick is fine and it should be him but apparently some guy called Jim Rome is been tipped to get the gig

Yea I think Rome is one of those sports personalities you either love or hate...has a very popular radio show.....really not sure how he will do as a commentator....may take quite a few events for him to get use to calling fights.
