The MMA thread

I like Charles Oliveira he's an exciting fighter, but I think this is where Pettis stops the rot and picks up a win. Maybe even a nice KO. I think Lauzon is gonna win handily. The main event I'm not sure, you'd think age has to catch up with Maia eventually, I could see Condit finishing him late by being very careful to keep a long distance and wear him down. On the other hand, his takedown defence is said to not be the best and Maia is just a beastly grappler, so it could be another fight like the one against Matt Brown.

Pettis needs a win, and an impressive one at that. Dude went from looking unbeatable to a mess in a heartbeat.

Yeah I hope he wins. The weight drop might do him a few favours. I think it was confidence more than anything. In fairness to him he had a RDA fight who might would struggle against I'd suggest and was a close fight vs. Alvarez.

Looking forward to seeing COndit back as well

Firas Zahabi makes a pretty good case as to why Conor won in his latest YouTube video. Everything comes down to round 2 and despite Nate's strong finish, Conor's two knockdowns trumped whatever Nate did at the end of the round, which in his view gave Conor a 10-9 and a 48-47 overall.

Conor won round 2. You can't be on top for 3 and a half minutes, knocking the other guy down twice, and then lose the last 90 seconds with a barrage of punches without being knocked down. The round is scored over 5 minutes, not 90 seconds. Most experts admitted Conor won the round and the only ones bitching are the McGregor haters.

There were several points where Nate had him on the ropes and Conor was in real danger of losing. Nate could eat Conor's punches all day, he's a bleeder and it takes a lot more to finish him than Conor can deliver. I don't think Nate was ever really in danger, Conor did not push him that close to his limit. Conor gassed again. With a full camp, total focus, and 5 months of prep the best he could do was a controversial split decision. Hollow victory for Dana's meal ticket.

Conor did gas but came back and recovered. He won the fourth after gassing in the third.

Nate got knocked down three times, of course he was in danger. McGregor chose not to get embroiled in a ground game and he was correct in doing so.

It wasn't controversial at all. Conor won 3-2 in rounds, it was that simple. He won most of round 2. Just because you end the round on top, it doesn't mean you win the round. The round is 5 minutes long, not 90 seconds.

And it wasn't a split decision. There was nothing split about it. Not one judge gave it to Nate. It was a majority decision.

Hollow? You really are a whiny little bitch when it comes to all things McGregor.

Well you can if the barrage of punches is relentless enough to do major damage your opponent. That obviously didn't happen in this case, at least to the extent necessary for Conor's two knockdowns of Nate to be invalidated.

Obviously if Conor was knocked down a couple of times it would have been different, but he wasn't. Scoring wise he wins that round all day long.

I agree. The only difference among the judges was round 3 where one of the judges had it as a 10-8 to Nate, which resulted in him scoring the fight a draw.

Personally I think there has to be more for it to be a 10-8 but I can understand why one would score it that way. Some people thought the first round was a 10-8. I personally thought both were 10-9 although if one was a 10-8, it was the third round.

Round one could've been a 10-8 had Conor not elected to not step away from Nate after he knocked him down. Round 2 could've gone in that direction as well. A bit of ground and pound on top of a knock down could've done just that. However, it was clear Conor was scared to go ground for fear of gassing or being submitted like in the first fight. That was a tactical choice he made, so a 10-9 based strictly on the knockdowns and significant strikes is the best he could've hoped for.

I agree.

Conor was right not to engage on the ground also.

I don't think he's the same after his ridiculous fight with Robbie Lawlor. Gonna get well paid to beat people in Bellator.

Or maybe he's just running away before CM Punk starts battering people in the UFC welterweight division.
:D He's going to get his ass handed to him so badly it's going to be ridiculous. By an unkown fighter nonetheless.

The only bitch is Conor McGregor, who should have been docked points for RUNNING AWAY from his opponent.

Nonsense. He disengaged to catch his breath and reset himself but immediately engaged with Diaz afterwards. Your bias is pretty intense.

I'm a Diaz fan and can't stand McGregor but Come on man stop being deluded.

McGregor won round 2 clear cut. He won the fight 48-47, the judges got it right for once. As for running away, don't be silly. These are professional fighters, they don't run away. He was creating space and resetting. He went straight back in as soon as he reset, nothing wrong with that. Next you'll be calling fighters pussys for blocking punches and defending takedowns...

I am pretty sure that Diaz could have won that fight if his blood didn't cover his eyes round 4 but that's a different story. On the night, McGregor had the better game plan and deserved to win.

Ridiculous comment. Resetting against a guy who is wildly swinging at you is the obvious thing to do. I see you chose to answer one line of my post rather than all of it.

Seriously, who the feck promoted that guy? Talks crap in every thread I've seen him in.

On the fight, I rewatched it today. McGregor was better in 1, 2 and 4. His round 5 performance was actually better than I remembered it, but if you want to give that one to Diaz (who also definitely won round 3) I don't think that would be hugely controversial. The fighter with the better game plan won.

"Do Bronx" Olivera made weight at 143 this morning (if i heard Anik correctly..)

shocking considering how many times he missed weight.

edit. re watched the whole thing. Should be a classic fight night. Plenty good fights.

I hope Pettis wins but Oliveira really looking menacing.
Ill be backing Maia too. I like Condit but i want to see Maia and his bjj fighting for the title.
Lauzon should avenge that loss too.

And good to see El Fuerte Barzola from Peru in the card. I think he gonna grind a victory.

ps. Paige ass

I rematched it all today

And round 3 was definitely not the 10-8 that some have discussed

In fact both fighters had good moments for the first 4 mins. It was only the final min that Diaz really dominated

A 10-8 round in my mind is one when a fighter dominates for all 5 mins and nearly finishes on a couple of occasions

I think someone mentioned that joe rogan got overly excited about McGregor tiring and it may have influenced some people. I agree, his commentary on the night certainly had me thinking the same

Yes! Barzola with a great performance

edit. got robbed by the judges... incredible and disgraceful. That was totally fixed, no doubt about that.

Yeah, to be honest my memory of round 3 had been affected by all the Diaz excitement, having rewatched it, while I give that round to Diaz, Conor was a lot better than I remembered. He had about a minute and a half in the middle of the 3rd, after an early flurry by Diaz, where he looked better. Which was probably longer than Diaz' good spell in 2 which had all his fans raving.

I thought Sam Alvey was going to put his fists through the floor finishing off Casey there. Fair wild swinging going on! I wouldn't say he's all there either.
