The MMA thread

I think Mighty Mouse is mightier now than he was back then.

I'd certainly agree with you, but I think it shows he isn't as dominant when upping the weight class (as would be true for just about anyone).

And Cruz showed against Dillashaw that he can still hang with the best fighters. As good as a fight it may be, I don't see a different outcome.

Look at the size difference though. No wonder Cruz could throw him around like a rag doll.

MM has learnt a lot and improved in every department since that fight almost 5yrs ago.

Dillishaw, as good as he is, isn't a proving ground for MM. The fight between them was close, and since then, Cruz has been out of the loop [injured] for some time whilst MM has gone from strength to strength; it'd be a huge task for him to take on MM any time soon.

The weight class thing is an issue, also. As champions, there's no onus on MM going up to BM or Cruz dropping down. So I'm not sure the fight could even be made without a massive financial incentive for whichever party to gain/drop to meet the other.

I'd like to see MM go up and fight Dillishaw as a test fight to see if he can hack it at 135. Dodson recently moved up and seems to have adjusted nicely, so no reason Johnson can't as well. I just think the size issue would come into play if he fought Cruz again - as in MM would barely make 135 and Cruz would walk into the Octagon at about 145 ish after rehydrating.

Judging by his recent Twitter posts I think McGregor is gonna have to vacate his belt, he is obsessed with fighting Diaz.

Also he's getting more and more Kanye by the day.

Although Dodson and MM are the same height, Dodson is heavily muscled and much more suited to filling out at BM - Dodson had to cut to make FW (I'm sure I recall him saying the cuts were one of the reasons he went up) whereas MM was fighting in a class he shouldn't really have been in. I'm not sure it's then fair to expect to see the same MM out there at 135 as we currently see at FW after so long out of the division.

He's clearly a natural FW, as Cruz is a natural BM, so it's compromising either one of them to meet the other.

There is a reason MM left the bantamweight division despite being well ranked. He could mix it with the best in terms of technical striking but ultimately lacked the power to worry them and was too physically small to defend takedowns against the best in the division. Cruz severely exposed this and it would have been the go to strategy of his later opponents if he hadn't dropped to fly.

He has since done very well at a more natural weight class but it is a reasonably weak division that is in its infancy. MM would still get thrown around by bigger men who know how to wrestle and still doesn't possess the power to make them reluctant to walk through his punches. Despite previously fighting at a higher weight it's not like he is even big for a flyweight, he will always be short and if he couldn't pack on the mass and muscle when he had no choice but to fight at bantamweight why in the world would he be more capable of doing it now.

Since he fought McCall no one has come close to challenging him in the division, part of that is because he is very good but is also due to the lack of quality in opposition. It's nowhere close to being on the level of how it was for Rousey but he benefits from the same phenomenon, he sparkles infinitely brighter by virtue of being surrounded by what is mostly a sea of turds* in a division yet to truly find its feet.

I do like him and enjoy watching his fights but think it would be infinitely more sensible for him to wait for a genuine challenger to emerge at flyweight. The last thing the division needs is for him to follow Dodson (who has genuine KO power) out of it.

*hyperbole.

McGregor's Twitter is a hot mess. Sounds like he's spending more time getting pissed up than training in Iceland.

Well Conor's head would implode if he goes more then a couple of days without getting any attention.

McGregor is coming across like a guy who's girlfriend left him for a stud. UFC 200 looks like a great card for the purists, much better with this main event than an inconsequential one featuring him and Diaz. He needs to get over himself.

He isn't scheduled to fight any time soon so why bother training for one?

Actually what's going on? Is he holding some sort of weird Q&A on Twitter for himself?

Just throwing out random statements on Twitter to remain relevant while everyone else is trying to promote 200.

So some new fight possibilities on the horizon...

TJ Dillashaw vs. Raphael Assuncao at 200. Another rematch on a card stacked with rematches but I'm ok with this. TJ has gone from strength to strength since he lost that SD against Assuncao... bit of a risk after such a long break for Assuncao though... Think he'll lose this one unfortunately.

Robbie Lawler vs. Tyron Waitley. He's done it. Woodley has waited and campaigned and got his wish. Hope ruthless uppercuts this douche over the cage and into the spanish announcers table.

Barboaza vs. Giblert Melendez at UFC Fox 20. Should be a fun fight, throwing the winner into the title mix.

Add Holm/Shevchenko and Rumble/Teixeira to the list too. Both apparently set for UFC on Fox 20 on July 23rd, Holm/Shevchenko apparently the headliner.

In a weird way it makes sense for the Holm fight to headline. Rumble's fights are normally done in the first round or two anyway and Holm and Shevchenko can both take a while to get going, especially Shevchenko. 5 rounds should make it a better fight.

Holm's a much bigger name to a more casual audience than anyone else on the card as well so she probably brings more interest.

Likewise I can't exactly see Floyd submitting Conor with rear naked choke if its MMA rules.
Definitely. Which I why I don't see where they could meet in the middle. It would be a freak show, like the time Ali fought that Sumo Wrestler.

Maybe a two round fight with one round boxing and the other MMA. They can toss for which goes first.

If that was the case, McGregor would win because Floyd hasn't got KO power.
