The MMA thread

I think it's fair to say he would need a dedicated camp and a long run-in to prepare for a 5 round fight. These guys are elite athletes who train to peak at specific times and short notice will have prevented this. However, his baseline fitness should have been plenty good enough to get him through two rounds, especially when he spent most of them lying on top of McGregor. The fact that he seemed so unsteady on his feet at the end of that second round had to be down to damage done in the exchanges rather than a lack of cardio conditioning.

Mendes says himself he always keeps himself close to fighting shape. His weight is always good and he doesn't have a problem cutting. His teammate Faber also says that they are always fit and ready to go.

The damage to the body from the kicks had to be the reason for Mendes' tiredness. Nothing else makes sense. He was wobbly from the kicks after less than two minutes. He was breathing heaving at that stage.

There is no way Mendes suffers from a lack of conditioning anyway. He's in unbelievable shape. He should last two rounds.

And Mendes wouldn't have taken the fight if he didn't think he was ready. Losing against McGregor was a huge risk that he wouldn't have taken. Losing puts him way back for a title shot realistically as he has lost two in a row now. Edgar will definitely go next, and then it may even be someone else. He could have waited and just taken on the winner of McGregor and Aldo.

He may even have to fight Frankie next.

Holy shit, John Kavanagh said on the MMA Hour that they didn't do one live round of wrestling for the whole fight camp because of McGregor's knee. He said it was fine when it was time to fight but they didn't want to risk it in camp at all.

That's massively impressive if true, massively.

Hey folks I'm in Portugal with very limited wi fi

Has there been much fallout or interesting mma news since the McGregor fight?

He didn't sound sincere. It sounds like an excuse.

I'd respect him a lot more if he just came out and said that two weeks was not enough for them to prepare for a wrestler of Chad's quality but they couldn't let the Irish fans down and cancel.

See no reason not to believe it's legit. McGregor isn't one to make excuses, he didn't try to make any excuses or even want to discuss the injury after the fight. Expect what Kavanagh said was true. I don't think it matters either way though.

It was reported a while ago he injured his knee, he was even asked about it at a scrum before the event. So it makes perfect sense.

Does it mean with more time on the mat wrestling this camp he could have did better stopping Mendes taking him down? Not necessarily, since Mendes is elite at that but it still shows the nature of McGregor that he'd get in and fight despite it all.

Aye, even if his knee was fine he probably wouldn't have been able to improve much in the two weeks he had for Mendes, doubt it had any real effect on the way the fight went.

The point I'm making is, there was nothing wrong with being out wrestled by Chad.

I'd rather his coach had just come out and said Mendes is a top wrestler and McGregor needs to improve his wrestling. There was no excuse for Connor to not even attempt to get up and salvage something from the round or work of his back. He even asked Herb Dean to stand it up despite doing very little to nullify Chad's game from on top.

McGregor didn't make the excuse because it's likely BS or it's an injury that his camp are trying to play up because of his lack of wrestling being exposed.

And yes, I'm a Connor fan.

Conor.

Fedor is coming back. Not sure I love it but will watch obviously. I'd guess at Bellator being the destination.
I'll pass.

Him loosing 3 straight and looking worse each time was sad. A 40 year old Fedor attempting a return would just be too difficult to watch.

Any pound-for-pound ranking that has Rhonda Rousey on it can't be taken seriously.

The whole point of the p4p rankings is to rank fighters across weight classes. Part of that involves disregarding factors outside of their control (height, gender).

Ronda should absolutely be on the list.

Spot on. I've noticed her critics are generally dudes who are probably insecure that she can beat them up in 30 seconds or less.

I've got no doubt that she could beat me up. She still shouldn't be on that list. Did some research and she's not on the pound-for-pound rankings for Sherdog, Tapology, ESPN, or MMAJunkie. I'm assuming UFC put her on theirs strictly for marketing purposes. Tbh, I find rankings to be a bit pointless and an entirely American concept (especially pre-season rankings which always seems silly).

How do you suggest people do this? She's allegedly a woman. Now I have to imagine how she'd fight as a man?? :wenger:

She's easily the most dominant fighter in the women's field, and as MannyB correctly pointed out, the rankings aren't about whether #4 can beat #7 up, they are independent of gender or other factors like weight class.

Yep. The list would include just a bunch of heavyweights and lightweights otherwise.

No you really don't...

Do you have the same difficulty disregarding height and weight?

Correct.

No it doesn't. @ height.

To an extent it needs to be factored in relative to each weight class. Tall at 145 is 5'9, tall at heavyweight is 6'11.

If my aunt had balls, she'd be my uncle. If Serena Williams had a penis, would she be the greatest athlete ever? These are questions that can't be answered. So according to your logic, why isn't Rhonda Rousey #1 on the pound-for-pound list? She's been inarguably more dominant in her fights than anyone else on that list. My whole point is that the UFC included her on that list for their own marketing reasons.

I don't think there's any real point to P4P lists other than something for people to argue over on the internet. That being said, Ronda's competition hasn't been anywhere near the same level as basically everyone else on that list.

Probably because the lack of competition in her gender/division, which is likely down to a combination of how good she is and the fact that women's MMA is still in its infancy.

Exactly. Ignoring the obvious genetic strength differences between the sexes, do people honestly believe she has a better skill set than the likes of Barao and TJ who fight at the same weight?

Her stand up is appalling.
