The MMA thread

Oh, I'm not denying that at all. The guy is very smart, he knows what he's doing. A big part of his quick rise to the top is due to these things he does and says. I can live with a bit of arrogance as this is the ultimate macho sport but clowning around like this will make the more neutral viewer root more for his opponent than him. Of course he won't give a shit as it will only make the fight more exciting and his purse bigger.
Well yeah, I'm sure he's happy to be the bad guy. Same as Chael Sonnen.

I've seen a fair few Irish people hating on McGregor on social media these last few days, which is interesting. We tend to hate confident people.

I think that he has a little bit too much confidence in his own abilities but i like him as a fighter and he seems to be a likeable person.
In his category there is a huge gap between Edgar/Aldo and the others, he will maybe realise that, later.

I've watched quite a few documentaries/interviews with him and when he's not trying to sell fights he seems like really nice guy. He's blatantly putting on a show to put bums on seats, although the bravado does seem to be based on genuine self-belief. Be interesting to see how he copes with his first defeat in the UFC.

Although, to be fair, he wasn't undefeated when he joined the UFC. The last bloke who beat him is another Irish fighter, Joseph Duffy, who gets his UFC debut in March.

This is always interesting for me. I wonder how different Mayweather would be if he lost.
I quite like guys who border on cocky/arrogant in MMA and boxing. It adds to the spectacle for me. But when they do face a loss and they find an excuse (David Hayes's toe etc..) I lose a lot of respect for them. Would rather they just take that loss on the chin, admit they lost to the better fighter on the night and move on. No harm.

You'll find most champions in Sport (especially combat sports) have that same level of uber confidence. I'd say Connor is from the Neville Goddard school of self actualisation.

When you're competing at the top level in sport and in MMA in particular it serves no purpose to have anything other than 100% confidence in yourself.

That seems to be a problem with English people as well. If someone dares have a bit of self belief they're arrogant and people "can't wait to see them lose" always seems a bit odd, especially when the person in question tends to back it up. It's a trait of the media to build someone up with what seems like a hope or desperation to just shoot them back down again. Seems we'd rather back a "plucky underdog" than someone who's actually good at something.

"Tall poppy syndrome" Weird the way it affects so many English-speaking countries but not Murka.

Well he made $220,000 for an easy fight with Siver, plus whatever Reebok and other sponsors are paying, and did a huge number of viewers on Fox so it's working for him either way. I think he's great to watch and I am firmly aboard the hype train! I really think he can beat Aldo.

It's not only english people, Jake White (World champion with the springbok) is the new MHRC "coach-consultant), and after a mistake on his behalf, he thought that Oyonnax was a Pro D2 team (second division) and mixed them up with Montauban, and now the Rugby press and the other team's fans hate him for his arrogance.

Damn Irish, they ruined Ireland!

On Mcgregor I don't think he is ready to beat Aldo. There are still flaws there that someone as good and experienced as Scarface will exploit. If he does lose though I can see him coming back stronger and wiser and winning a rematch in a year or two.

Gustafsson vs Johnson is upon us. Another great fight.

who wins?

Im thinking it can go the same way Jones vs Cormier. Johnson to dominate the first rounds, with a big chance he can finish it, until he run out of gas. If Gustaffson can survive the first 2 rounds, i think he will take it by managing the fight using his long extremities. Or maybe a submission... Johnson loves to get submitted with a rear naked choke.

Perhaps Redmond should not have taken this fight

These have been all 10-8's IMO, but I doubt the judges will score it like that

Yeah I enjoyed it

Neither went nuts looking for the win, but totally understandable.

Massive for Bader, but looking at the division a Davis win would have probably been better
