The MMA thread

I think if that was a title fight the ref gives him a few more seconds to try and regain his senses and show some defence but he can't have many complaints, caught with 2 clean shots.

Adesanya is finished at the top.
Yeah, his punch resistance has totally gone. One shotted where in the past, he would've taken that hit and would've most likely struck back with a counter of his own. Now shots like that fold him like a deck chair. Consequence of getting punched in the head for a living.

He came into this focused and in great shape, which makes it even clearer that he's not able to handle the top level anymore. Can't be far off retiring as the fall from grace from here might be too much for a formerly dominant champ to handle, plus it's undignified to start getting fed to up and comers.

Very poor looking PPV tonight. The rematch between Strickland and Du Plessis does not interest me at all, Strickland is one of the most boring fighters to watch, Dricus is entertaining but in a so-bad-its-good kind of way.

I am interested though in the womens title fight, Weili vs Tatiana Suarez. Suarez was so hyped when she came in, big frame (for strawweight) with great wrestling, but thats almost 9 years ago now, that injury that put her out for over three years was very disappointing. She's come back strong though and hopefully can have 2-3 good years in the UFC at the top of her game. Hoping for an interesting fight where Suarez gets to use her wrestling. She and Weili are actually quite similar in height and reach, which was surprising, Tatiana just a bit bigger. Ultimately unless she submits Weili I think she'll lose, its her first 5 round fight and Weili is much better on the feet.

Not much to talk about for the rest of the card to be honest.

I don't know why but I have an irrational liking for Zhang Weili, whenever she fights I'm giddy.

Hoping for Tatiana to wrestlefeck and submit her.

Been a fan since her TUF days and watching her destroy Alexa Grasso live here in Chile back in 2017.

ps. anyone watching BKFC. Nice liver shot KO just now.

So, who to root for

The racist, homophobic, nazi sympathiser, Trumper or the White South African, Trump and Musk fanboy who almost certainly will become more and more controversial in time

I’m hoping for double KO and both to pop for steroids (although I don’t think they test anymore?)

I'm just gonna choose to not watch tonight because they're both so unlikable.

Should DDP be winning in rounds 1-3 or not?
I think whoever wins will likely be by decision again.

Cheers. That’s what I was thinking but checking the odds it looks like DDP heavily fancied inside the distance but unsure about that. Went for him to win by decision again.

One dimensional fighters will always struggle when facing decent competition.

That cut on Tatianas knee is deep!

Felt like a bit of a letdown from Strickland really. Spoke about it being a war in the build up and just never felt like he went for that, just more of the same from the first fight they had. Don’t need to see that fight again.

Good performances by the champs - was impressed by Weili as I usually am but I was surprised by how tired Suarez got very quickly, those takedown entries were often very slow which made them much easier to defend.

Dricus fought a smart fight, just was much more diverse with his attacks and outworked Strickland.

Interested to see what they do next, you would think Khamzat is next in line but where can he travel? Imavov might end up getting the call ahead of him as a result. I'd like to see both this year in whatever order but DDP that active so probably not.

Good chance of DDP taking on Khamzat in South Africa IMO.

Is he barred from travelling?

Is he barred from travelling?

I don't know if it's ever been fully confirmed but there's big rumours that he can't travel to the US because of his association with Ramzan Kadryov.

If that's the case I don't know what his ability is to travel elsewhere either (say South Africa for example), but I guess there's a good chance DDP might be happy to wait until October and fight him on the PPV then in Abu Dhabi.

Yeah I was wondering about Kadryov, but surely a loose association, along with the fact he hasn’t committed any crimes, would be a tough reason for a travel ban

That is Strickland in a nutshell isn't it, talk a big game and about going to war, fighting like a man, etc, then put on a sparring match performance and back off every time the opponent pressures him. He'll challenge his opponent at the end of a fight he's winning to a Holloway-style brawl and then flinch and retreat if they oblige. Glad he lost.

A question on canadian fighters struggling to become champions or top contenders in the UFC when GSP was still there as the dominant champion.

How big of a star was Georges in Canada during that 2006 to 2013 time and did other canadian fighters actually felt pressure to live up to him ?

I know Patrick Cote and Rory Macdonald have fought for the title, but generally speaking, was there kind of a ''GSP shadow'' ?
