What a fight!! Can only imagine what that would've been like with a crowd, Santos did unbelievably well to even make it out of the first round and then to turn the tide and finish the fight like that, fantastic stuff.

Fight of the night so far. Hopefully the sexy mexi gets some love too from Dana. Must be scary to empty your tank trying to finish the fight and the other guy refusing to quit.

Super Sodiq with a super tight guillotine. Good stuff.

Aaron Pico vs Jeremy Kennedy starting in 10 minutes (Bellator).

Bummer. Pico injured his shoulder but kept fighting till the Dr stopped it..

Amazing atmosphere. Hard to believe it’s already been 4 years. The UFC has been on a downward spiral ever since.

I think you are confusing them not hitting this peak (understandable as this was a generational event in their history) with a downward spiral, which they absolutely are not on...

They definitely in terms of star power and PPV buys. This was the event that did Conor in and he's never been able to recover since. Their other big draw, Jones, barely fights anymore either. The current "stars" aren't bad to watch, but UFC's star power factor from the old Conor/Jones/Silva/Rousey era is gone.

I realize that. The point was that Conor's decline as a marketable fighter who defeated quality opponents began with the beatdown he received from Khabib (despite the earlier Diaz loss). Following the Khabib fight, the UFC was never able to present him in his old Mystic Mac guise - a fighter who could actually win a belt - anymore. He's basically been reduced to a marketing gimmick whose fighting skills have been exposed as far inferior to his pre-fight hype capabilities.

I think they were in the past, but from what I see in the pic here, he definitely looks like he's on TRT (which is quite different from ordinary PEDs).
It certainly did miracles for Dan Henderson and Vitor Belfort. Johnny Hendricks fell like a stone on Jupiter after the ban, though he left his team too and seemingly lost his mind as well.

Can't say I know anything about how it works though.

Absolutely - it makes a huge difference in competitive athletes. The Belfort case being the most notable example. Its less of a factor in middle aged males unless of course they work out every day and eat right. In Dana's case that was likely not the case in recent years until recently, when he seems to have worked on his diet.

Yes but it’s obvious Conor didn’t need that I can defeat anyone hype with his numbers? The proof is literally right there. His buys v Cerrone only came just behind Khabibs fight (which is absolutely ridiculous) I’d even argue Conor did, and continued to do after losses, his own marketing.
People just want to see Conor fight. Nothings exposed etc, people want to watch him in an octagon.
Sometimes someone just has crossover appeal, there’s no explaining it. I remember when his star was supposed to tank after Diaz 1 and nobody would want to watch Diaz 2.
Sometimes you just have it

"Having it" is a result of his hype factor - something that was built atop his mid 2010s persona as he was coming up and not losing fights. Once that gets smashed, it gradually dissipates and leaves you with what you see today. A fighter in obvious decline, whose ability to pull in viewers was substantially tied to his perceived infallibility. Now that the latter has been smashed, the former will follow. It doesn't mean that Conor fights won't be huge draws, they will always draw more than anyone else. It just means that we are on the rapid downhill slope of his marketability at this stage of his career, and with that, so too the UFC's ability draw very large audiences.

They milked the Conor juggernaut down to the bone, and now that its over, they are going to have to reinvent themselves to keep ahead of the game.

I will jump and yell if Olivera gets the submission.

I like TJ to sleep Sterling, if he hasn't lost his edge.

Olivera doesn’t have the most exciting personality, but I like the way he fights. He’s never been a point scorer, I think he lost 1 or 2 early fights bnot thinking about points, and perhaps lacking a ruthless tactic.

He’s taken remarkably little damage for a guy in the top 10 for so long.

Great frame for submission as well.
