The MMA thread

As usually...big mouths talking about how they going to smash each other, the hatred, no touching gloves etc etc. So far I've seen nothing other than promotional garbage of a fake rivalry.

Colby is just a much better fighter. Masvidal is a slightly more rounded McGregor. Get him to the ground and get him to gas and he has no answer.

Covington is frustrating to watch. Zero doubt in my mind Masvidal would beat him if they met on the street.

Last three fights were exactly the same. The striker got wrestlefecked to oblivion by the grappler.

Masvidal tricked a whole bunch of fans into thinking he was top tier with one flying knee, fair play to him.

I've always said it, Mas, like Nate, is a gatekeeper that got lucky.

Beat Till after being on the brink of defeat.

Cheap shotted Leon Edwards (then came up with a great line about the 3 piece and a soda).

Flying knee of Askren.

His 15 minutes of fame are up and he's back where he belongs... Keeping the gate.

What a shit fight that main event was.

Levels to the game really. Masvidal is a good fighter but he's never been able to take it that step further and has crumbled every time he's faced one of the top fighters. As much as people hate Colby, he's a very good fighter, plenty of skill, good chin, good heart and a good gas tank. He's a very good fighter, easily top two in the division as I don't think there's much at all; between him and Usman either.

It should be remembered that Masvidal is 37 years old. A reflexive fighter who is getting way up there in age generally needs to amend their style, or the losses start to pile up because their brain and body cannot communicate fast enough to evade shots that they never would have got caught by in their younger days.

Apart from rocking Colby, Jorge lost numerous portions of the stand up getting clipped by shots he had actually offered his face to set up and bait. That means he was setting traps he couldn't convert, which is always a disaster for someone trying to play out a counter-striking strategy.

Of course, Colby's pace and aggression plus the emotional toll played their parts in Masvidal gassing early, but what stood out for me is that without the ability to set up (execute) crushing counters, Masvidal had nowhere to turn to.

It's a strange time for the UFC to offer him a lucrative contract as he's not able to do what he once did and will need set conditions against specific types of opponents to put on a show - a Masvidal that can't set up and deliver on traps he's trying to lay is not really a threat or particularly exciting to watch... and you can't roll out fighters as slow and durable as Diaz bros.

It's fights like Conor that seem perfect for both of them at this point in their careers. Both good for a round or two before they fade and neither being nimble or elusive anymore, giving the crowds who just want to see a scrap, exactly what they want to see.

Imagine that went into the third round

Would love to see Colby wipe the floor with Dustin.
Not a fan of Dustin?
