He didn't get stopped but that's another loss for Kelvin, and it doesn't bode well for him moving forward. The UFC have been ruthless in cutting fighters, and you start to wonder whether he's now at risk of having that happen to him.

Such a shame. If he had the mentality of a Poirier or someone like that, I really feel he had the ability to be champion.

L@l. No one is cutting Gastelum. He's a fecking warrior. Last night was a close fight.

“Thank you Jesus - without him, delivering this devastating roundhouse to the head would not have been possible. All praise to him.”

- Fighters.

So not sure if this is the right place or if we just don’t talk about it but thoughts on Woodley vs what’s his face?

I seen it kicked off today and Woodleys sister was ready to throw bombs as yes men disrespected Mama Woodley which I’m sure if any of you follow MMA closely you’ll know she is a fecking Saint and loved by all.

Probably all staged though but I hope he actually throws the right for one gad damn fight and it connects.

Talking a lot without saying much but I could listen to him all day in the background.

He always says nothing yet it's easy to still listen, it's an amazing ability.

Not sure that can be said of Gane, although it's not out there as a statement given he's still on an upward trajectory.

The UFC, or even MMA heavyweight division is young and undeveloped when compared to lighter divisions where you have to be something special to reach top 5-10. A fighter like Gane, actually being mobile, in shape, tactical and rounded, is the future of the weight class, eventually.

All these fat, lazy untrained fighters padding out the division will be phased out as the bar raises. Just because you're big and powerful, it's no reason to forgo technique, diet, cardio and tactical mindfulness. Those who don't get with the program should be outliers, like Andy Ruiz shocking the boxing world.

What Gane did to Lewis should be par for the course; once actual athletic and proper heavyweights enter the scene, it will and should be them and only them fighting it out for the top spots, which I think is already in motion with N'Gannou, Miocic, Jones and the aforementioned already becoming an acceded unit who will jostle for the belt amongst themselves for at least the next couple of years if Dana's scumbaggery doesn't scupper everything.

Lewis being baffled by basic movement and general competence and ringmanship shines a light on him and the organisation more than it marks Gane as something special, I think. Lewis is a top tier plodder - one of the best of the donkeys, but fighters like him and the rest who he's contending with below those top slots are the sign of a division that's still in its fledgling stages and maybe 5 years from now, you'll not see these types in main events.

Gane was earmarked for the top end of the division and potential champion ages ago, but his next few opponents will really let us know where's he's at. It's been a cakewalk thus far for him marching through a division where his fitness has given an edge before his athleticism is even mentioned. He's bouncing on his feet and good to go deep into bouts where opponents are out of gas after 3-4 minutes of the first round. He'll not encounter that again so we'll see what happens when he himself is taken into deep waters and has to think about more things than a hail Mary and quick first round explosion.

Sorry if I'm harping on, but the HW division has been a bugbear of mine for a while and I've praised those who take it seriously and train like those in lighter divisions do (Cain was a real pioneer) and those who have been given the opportunity, but don't make the best of themselves really are a kick in the teeth to all the hopefuls in stacked divisions who train intently and can only hope to get the nod.

The room for growth in the men's HW division is as vast as some of the female divisions who will eventually have part-timers and those without proper training camps and conditions phased out completely.

Fantastic post. My computer went to hell so I only managed to read this today.

I agree that the division is underdeveloped and that fighters who diet, improve technique and move fast could be the future but ill add one massive red flag: The best athletes usually end up in NBA NFL or wrestling like Jordan Burroughs. I doubt Gable Stevenson will do MMA given the options he has. So unless the UFC would pay better than those leagues, its hard to see the trend of big powerful dudes going away in the short term.

I think the flying knee is underutilized. And knees and elbows in general. This elbow by Weidman is one of my favorite KOs, I had no idea what happened in real time, can't see it well here but this is the only version on YouTube.

Speaking of under-utilised techniques does anyone know why we never see triangle submissions any more? It was one of the more common ways to end a fight in the early UFC days but you literally never see a fight stopped this way any more. Is it because BJJ has evolved and everyone knows how to escape one now?

Yeah, probably one of the reasons.

HERE WE GO!!

Dammnnn. What a victory for Pat Sabatini.

Sadly, Emmers didn't tap or defend that heel hook and now his knee is all torn apart.

The man’s a tank too just by looking at him could be a contender
Nah, he’s nothing special. Got flatlined himself by an average fighter in his fight prior to this. Looked promising a few years ago but he’s getting old now & is way too limited. No gas tank either.

Main event time.

edit. Giga is a beast. 7-0 in the UFC now. Great call out to Max Holloway (fighting Yair) too. The Korean Zombie (ranked 4th) makes sense as a next opponent.

So, as expected, Woodley lost. How is the MMA world taking it?
Well at least he didn’t get starched in the first round. I tried to stay up for it but watched the first fight and it was so shit I went to bed

haha, I woke up randomly at 3am and stayed up to watch the undercard and 'main event'. I bet these pro fighters cannot believe they are the undercard to a non-professional, ppv bout!

Woodley did better than I thought as he didn't actually gas, but was the same, predictable, gun shy Woodley he's been for years now.

Paul's found his level, though - any better than Woodley will get him seriously hurt. Once they went past the 4th, it got really sloppy (read dangerous against an actual striker) as all the tight(ish) work went to pot and they both looked completely amateurish.
He's already begging for a rematch. So sad and pathetic.

"Falling in and out of debt"
Imagine being an ex world champion fighter having to ask an obnoxious YouTube 'personality' for a rematch!

Dignity goes out the window when there's too many debts to pay and you're seeing more money for a freakshow than you ever did in your actual fighting career.

Unfortunately for Woodley, there's zero reason for a runback and he's lost the mystique with the L to carry PPV interest.

He'll have lost so much of his standing in the now with that loss and probably better for him to try and lay low for a few months than try and brush this off. Paul ran his mouth and saw it through, whilst Woodley didn't come close to backing his own words. That's going to hang around for a good while yet, especially if Paul decides to use Woodley as a way of keeping his own name relevant.

Utterly humiliating for MMA that he's 2-0 and can now mock a new target and goad them into a fight! He'll pick the target wisely, though; he can't go much further than calling out wrestlers who strike.
