Thanks for the scarf. I was wondering if you'd gotten my check yet.

The attendance was second highest ever for a MLS game.

Of course, Landycakes is hurt just in time for qualifiers. He's like John Terry. Hurt to miss all the qualifiers and will be fit for the big show.

Yup, I got it though I don't think I've dropped it at the bank yet. This week for sure.

That's awesome Seattle drew 66,000 fans which I read was second highest ever for an MLS match (dating to the inaugural MLS opening match in 1996 at the Rose Bowl).

Portland always brings a good crowd when we go up there and to Vancouver. Not best pleased for that many to see my Timbers get creamed, but happy for the MLS.

MLS surpasses 6 million in attendance.

Total: 6,072,677

Average: 18,801

Above:

Turkish Super League - 4.3 million
J. League 1 - 4.83 million
Bundesliga 2 - 5.28 million
Ligue 1 - 5.56 million
Brasileiro Série A - 5.6 million
Eredivisie - 5.98 million

That's pretty impressive. Interesting context. Also I wouldn't have guessed the J league was that well attended.

Sad to see the season end (Timbers never had a prayer of making the playoffs). It was a fun season though. Intrigued to see what happens in the off season with the new coach. He's got a strange lump of clay to work with. Should be fun.

Matt the other scarf should be in the mail shortly.

Pulling for DC in the playoffs. Vamos United!

How have KC not scored again? Could/should have had a penalty a second ago...

Was hoping to see LA but its just too far away and were busy all of Friday. Is the football on USA free to air? Our hotel only has non stop basketball and nfl.

Listening to American commentary seems so wrong while watching football.

I bet these commentators are NFL,Baseball commentators.

My god that was one of the most technically poor finishes to a game I've ever seen. Mis-touches, missed chances, poor passing.

Wow. A shocker.

And I watch an support the A-League.

LAG already had Beckham, Keane and Donovan under DP rules, so how were they able to sign another DP?

Does Chippen's salary not meet the DP requirement (i.e. it's below DP level)? That would seem rather odd a player would take a massive wage reduction from Al-Hilal to MLS.

If they have allocation money, they are able to pay down the salary or something like that.

The point in that link was that the MLS does not show this allocation money so fans can see how certain clubs can afford additional players and whatnot. It's sort of like a mid-level exemption in the NBA but imagine if the NBA withheld that information then fans would wonder exactly how a club might be able to sign a player for x million with a high cap number. The MLS does not release how much allocation money a club has available and has received in a given cap year. This is bullshit IMO. It comes off as if the MLS withholds that info in order for LAG or NYRB to sign whomever they desire. Now I'm sure the clubs have access to this info but if the league/players union is going to publish salaries/player compensation, then allocation figures need to be released as well.

Just saw Robbie Keane lift the trophy and promptly put it down and leave the podium, presumably to go to the locker room. Weird.

MLS playoffs once again give us two teams that barely got in. They need to do something that truly rewards the regular season.

That penalty call against Seattle was harsh IMO. And a horrible offside call against Seattle hurt as well. Some of the Sounders went mental after the final whistle.

Supporters shield! massive trophy that :D

LA Galaxy just gone 2-1 up in the final thanks to a Donovan pen, the commentator just said Giles Barnes will be coming on for Houston Dynamo. I remember when we were linked with Barnes after his showing for Derby against us, I wondered where he'd gone to.

Keane scores a pen to make it 3-1 in the 93rd minute, Beckham then gets subbed off and gets a hug from virtually every teammate taking about 2 minutes to come off the pitch

Successive MLS Cup wins for Galaxy.

Very polite LA fans with their chants...

Thank you Beckham
Thank you Beckham

Just back from the game. Great time. Plenty of excitement and controversy with 2 goals disallowed for Keane but it matters nothing now.
Not sure how it looked on tv but the atmosphere was great.

Congrats to LAG, but 4th place in the West and barely qualifying to champions of the league. The MLS needs to fix this playoff lark.

How about rewarding the regular season points leader and having a league cup?

Oh that's right, we want MLS to be like the NFL. Sigh.

it's the same in all the big sports here though isn't it, what with wildcards and all that?
The format they have right now is fine.
Once the MLS grows they may could add a cup competition and then the league winner could be on the points system.

dont they reward the regular points leaders with the supporters shield?

it doesn't get the press, but isn't the supporters shield really valued by the fans and the players?

one more thing on the final: nice to Omar Gonzalez win the MVP. He had a great game and I was wondering if they'd ignore that and give it to Beckham or Donovan.
Neither of those two lit the place up, although Beckham played better than Donovan.

It was in jest.

They have far too many clubs making the playoff system that's the problem. I have no qualms over four clubs in it, two per conference (another issue is the east/west insistence), but watering down the playoffs by adding six additional clubs devalues the regular season. This has been pointed out by various pundits during MLS games and articles.

I understand it's how we determine things in the US sporting scene, well except one of the biggest sporting venues - NCCA D1 football.

Playoffs are sport's version of the American Dream. Who doesn't love rooting for the little guy?

And that latter gets more pundit (and fan) bitching then pretty much all of the pro playoff systems combined.

I agree with your logic. I think baseball having a 162 game season and then having a series of playoffs to determine the winner is ludicrous. But it's not changing in any of those sports, and I doubt it'll change in the MLS anytime soon, either.
