The MLS thread

MLB, NHL and NBA have far too many playoff spots as well. I loved how MLB only allowed division winners into the playoffs up until the mid-90s. However, when the league went to three divisions I was fine with the wild card spot though I felt the 2-3 format in the divisional round was an atrocity. NBA and NHL allowing eight clubs per conference into the playoffs is a joke. I'm fine with how the NFL does it with with six clubs per conference considering not all clubs can play one another during the season, four divisions per conference, etc. Though I do find it a bit annoying when an 8-8 or 9-7 team wins out.

Playoffs are necessary to continue to grow the fanbase for alot of MLS clubs. There are alot of people who don't go to games or even watch it all, but if the team is in the playoffs, they will go and watch and that helps expose the product to new people and may turn them into fans. Alot of NBA, NHL or MLB teams have dismal attendance during the regular season, but if they get into the playoffs the games are always sold out.

Speaking as a Toronto FC supporter, just making the playoffs would be a real victory nevermind actually winning a playoff game.

Got tickets for Seattle vs Portland in Seattle :D

Going on a trip to Seattle, Portland and San Francisco in March and the game happened to be while we're gonna be in Seattle. Beyond excited, will be my first MLS match!

Watching Goals on Sunday (On Fox Soccer) - apparently the AEG Group that owns LA Galaxy and is looking to sell has whittled down potential buyers to 3 and one is the Qatari group that owns PSG. Ugh if that happens - not as though LA weren't already able to spend a crap load more than any other team to get designated players.

What Champions League winner from Portland's feeder club, Manchester United, has just signed for the Timbers?

That's right, Mikael Silvestre

You in Portland on March 9 by chance? Portland's got Montreal at home.

Went to see Wednesday's 3-3 preseason Timbers vs. San Jose. Very good game. Portland already looks better, not that that's saying much. Very attacking and much better possession. The defense wasn't as bad as the score sounds. A very iffy one off peno for handling, and a set piece score. All the new blood Porter has brought in looks good, though Valeri looked a bit sloppy.

Tonight vs Dallas and Saturday against AIK, we should see Silvestre as well as Frederic Piquionne who used to be all over Ligue 1 and then West Ham and I think Doncaster.

Washington has not state tax either.

My only guess is that Portland probably made a better deal, and he would get more playing time.

Seattle has matched Portland's Champions League winning left-back/centreback signing with the signing of Djimi Traore. I think Portland comes out ahead.

I see Kris Boyd has returned to Kilmarnock. He's found his level.

There was something about the guy though. How he manged to put as many in the net as he did with so little service, running under 20 meters in a game, and without seeming to know how to actually kick a ball has to count for something. He was a marvelous shite-talker, and unlike the legs, his mouth never tired. Good luck to him.

Portland looked great last weekend, and then a completely new side looked cack on Wednesday. If Porter keeps most of that first team, it should be a fun year.

Silvestre rivaling Jonathan Woodgate at Real Madrid for worst ever debut. Directly responsible for 3 goals in the first half hour.

Silvestre wasn't to blame for the first goal. The keeper shouldn't have gone to pick it up. He was skinned on the second ny goal though.

Third one on replay didn't look as bad on him, but he still should've been marking the fella that scored.

First one was insanely dumb to try and pass it back to the keeper from 3 yards away with 15 people in the box.

MLS really should consider moving the Chivas USA team out of LA and restart it elsewhere. The owner is fairly racist and the club had 7k attendance on opening day. Only about half of those were sold. I honestly don't see the point of having two teams in LA or in NY for that matter. Just because other big sports do it doesn't make it a good idea. There are plenty of other, better markets to get into.

Timbers already looking a huge improvement on last season.

Chivas is such a joke. I agree, there is NO reason to have 2 LA teams (or two NYC teams). Give Chivas to Orlando, make Atlanta the next expansion city over NYC2 and I will be happy.

Maybe it's because I've drank to much, but it has to be said: feck! this city has the best set of supporters in the league.

Wow, Silvestre . 77 he was directly responsible for 2.5 of those 3 thuogh he didn't give Ricketts much of a chance with that pass back. Reminded me of Evra's first game vs. City. No doubt he'll come good though. Just needs some time with the squad. I liked his distribution.

Great game, but feck me, too many bars between the stadium and home.

NY-Timbers hightlights. Great game. Great crowd. Timbers first goal

Silvestre highlights 1:00, 2:50, 4:00

77's right. Keeper had no business going to pick up the ball back from Mikael. Still a poor idea tapping it back like that.

Apart from his feckups I thought Silvestre had a decent game. He got forward when he could and almost scored when it was still 1-0.

Yeah, I'm not even a little worried that he won't come good. That 2nd gaff was so bad that you'd think it would have to be him not being used to turf. His distribution was marvelous, and pretty much everything he did on the ball was good. Just felt bad for the fella in that first half.

We looked like a proper team out there. Lovely first goal.

Did you and/or BigRedMachine make it to the game? I didn't really get that Morton salt girl thing they rolled out. Probably ruined that for once it wasn't raining. Love it when they let the Timbers Army lead the national anthem. They were in good voice all game.

I dint make it to the game, but I got off at the Jeld-Wen field station when the Army was singing the national Anthem, it sounded awesome from the outside. I watched the game at Kells.

I didn't go. I gave my ST away this season. I might get to a couple of games if I can be arsed.

Any of you Portland folks got any must see/do things for Portland? I will be there next Tuesday-Friday between San Francisco and Seattle.

If our back 5 gel, we should have a decent season. Either of your two going up for the game against the Sounders?

Do you like Beer? There are lots of places to drink/eat.
Deschutes, Hair of the Dog, Cascade, Rogue and Bailey's taproom are excellent places to have a pint. Voodoo Donut is 50% hype, but you should try their bacon maple bar.

I'm a big fan of having a coffee and wasting an hour or two at Powell's book store.
If the weather is conducive, you should make a trip to Multnomah falls, and if you're driving along the coast, crater lake is a must visit.

Oregon doesn't have sales tax, so try to squeeze in some shopping time.

Definitely up for any food & drink recommendations and I love craft beer.

Driving to Seattle from Portland, so we were thinking of detours to Mt St Helens or Mt Rainier.

I'll be sure to NOT mention the no sales tax thing to the missus...
