Missed the game. How'd Sporting play? Bad I assume since we didn't win.

Hard to say as Portland didn't let them. Not a showcase of great soccer skills either way, and Spencer had the Timbers playing like a right sack of cnuts. Late tackling, injury faking, elbow throwing, time wasting cnuts. It looked awkward for most of our wee bunch, though Boyd took to it like an ale after work. Having just a grand old time out there cnutting it up . IIRC Boyd, Charra, Palmer, Purdy, and Chabbala all got deserved cards. The ref called almost everything KC's way, and from what I could tell, he got it right, despite what the crowd thought (though the gal next to me kept asking "why are the Timbers so mean?"). KC picked up a few as well. Great drama, but poor football. Come to think of it, nobody seemed to get around to playing much football. Probably bad news for your KC as other teams may now be lining up to give them a kicking as well.

Anyway, the only score was off yer man Owen Goal who put in a nice header. So a much needed Timbers win, but I hope we don't make that style a habit. Still can't believe we didn't lose in the last 10.

Sir Matt, sorry no scarf yet. The table doesn't have the scarves out, and I lost track of the merchandise van after the game. Next game for sure though.

Win ugly. The fake indignation and imaginary card waving by a lot of Timbers fans everytime a Portland player goes down is laughable.

Agbossoumonde in D2 Highlights MLS Allocation Flaws
MLS’s Allocation Process was made for parity, but now it hinders talented US prospects from joining the league
by Abram Chamberlain | Monday, April 23, 2012

Gale Agbossoumonde should be in MLS not the American second division.

Red Bull New York is the perfect example of what is wrong with certain aspects of Major League Soccer. It is not that they are a bad team. They are, in fact, a greatly mediocre one. They are a team with ambitions. However, based on player acquisition rules and salary limitations, New York is forced to scavenge the Scandinavian leagues for role players. Just like the Los Angeles Galaxy and Seattle Sounders, New York is not allowed to be the super club they could be. And truthfully, the biggest concern for New York and the other clubs – or at least the most fixable one – should be that MLS’s allocation has outgrown its use.

Watching the Los Angeles Galaxy in the early goings of the MLS season and watching New York this past Sunday, anyone with even the slightest bit of soccer knowledge could easily see that both teams were struggling on defense. The easy solution in most leagues would be to either buy a player or get a player on loan.

The first name that came to my mind was Gale Agbossoumonde. Agbossoumonde is a 20-year-old American international who has been capped for the national team 20 times at the youth level and once at the senior level. He is a strong central defender. Perhaps he is the player that could easily fill the gap left either in Los Angeles by Omar Gonzalez or in New York by their poor scouting and transfers. Agbossoumonde is currently playing in the second division … OF AMERICA. That’s right, this young talented American is playing for the Carolina RailHawks of the NASL. There are various reasons why he is in America’s second division – the bogus deal he signed with Traffic Sports being among them – and honestly there is nothing wrong with playing division 2 soccer. I am all for young American prospects that can’t get playing time being loaned to NASL and USL PRO squads as opposed to playing in the reserve league. But when that someone is a highly sought prospect like Agbossoumonde, who could be starting in a few foreign leagues and definitely for either New York or Los Angeles, I want him in MLS.

So why does New York or Los Angeles not go all in to get Agbossoumonde? You need look no further than New York’s failed attempts to land Luis Robles. Robles, who received one, single, solitary cap for the USMNT, was signed by New York before New York was told he could not be claimed off a Discovery Claim and would have to enter the Allocation Process. This is disheartening. If Robles with one cap must go through discovery, then undoubtedly Agbossoumonde would as well – due to him having twenty more combined caps than Robles.

So why continue allocation any longer? MLS’s argument is that the majority of US based players would only sign with the big market clubs like New York and Los Angeles. So to keep things fair the league feels it must allocate national teamers (former, current, or otherwise) league-wide. Meanwhile, teams can sign any foreign player they want, so long as they have filed the paperwork for a Discovery Claim. But in a league consumed by the idea of parity, with quality limitations, salary restrictions – but also with myriads of loopholes, why is MLS worried about New York and LA dominating the US-born player market? Would Clint Dempsey not want to play for a Texas team if he could? Marcus Hahnemann seemed to be on a path back to Seattle before the Allocation Process stopped him. If, due to the salary cap, Chivas USA could pay Alejandro Bedoya twice the salary of Los Angeles or New York – and yes I know Chivas is still in LA – wouldn’t he prefer the extra money as an incentive?

Luis Robles backed out of MLS due to the Allocation Process. MLS clubs are failing to land players (either as straight out sales or loans) like Gale Agbossoumonde due to that same issue. It’s quite likely that other fringe USMNT players have decided in favor of the Bundesliga.2, the English Championship or other lower division European leagues, which are coincidentally not better than MLS, just to avoid losing control over where they would play.

Part of MLS’s original purpose was to help improve the US player. But right now the Allocation Process is keeping some of the better American prospects from playing in the USA. And until any team can make any offer on any American player that process is going to continue to be a hindrance. So forget about the salary restrictions for a moment, and forget about all the salary loopholes that seem to exist solely for foreign born players (that is another story in itself) and let’s look solely at the league’s Allocation Process. It has outgrown its use and it is time for MLS to look at either altering it or dropping it all together.

There are good, solid reasons for MLS to prefer parity to "super-teams", as the author refers to.

The allocation process, however, is not a good solid plan for achieving parity. It is instead fecking idiotic.

I just want to say I watched the second half of the NY:RB and Galaxy game the other morning and fecking jesus to christ it was one of the technically worst halfs of football i've ever seen. I've watched a fair bit of MLS over the last few years and I enjoy it but that was ridiculous.

At one point Beckham put this perfect pinpoint cross and Chad Barrett did this scooping leg up sidefoot at goal and it went 25 yards over the bar.. it was horrible to watch.

"Boss" as he is also known also completely bombed during his trials in Europe and couldn't get playing time when he was picked up. The general consensus of him is he is athletic, but with little skill and piss poor knowledge. Which is common in US defenders at a young age - brawn beats intellect.

So this article, using him as a player falling through the crack is completely wrong. It's also not due to the allocation that Boss decided to play D2 football, but he didn't want to sign a long-term contract. After this season he'll no longer be with Traffic which is the slave house for US players. So he's hedging his bets and plans on going back to Europe to sign a contract ten times more than what MLS offered him.

So if anything is to blame it's certainly not the allocation order but the league's insistence on owning players and a lack of cap space. However, Boss does not deserve a big contract like he wants. He already sold himself to the devil and is now paying the dues.

There's the reason. FC Dallas picked up a quality striker in the winter, Blas Perez. I would bet my house he'd have converted the cross. He's also a bit of a maniac up front - got sent off Sunday for going studs up on a defender (not tackling studs up but standing up and charging in).

Agbossoumonde in D2 Highlights MLS Allocation Flaws

As DavisJW states below he is not in MLS because he did not want to sign a long term deal. He thought he could make a big impression at the Olympics and sign with a European team but that plan will not obviously work anymore.

Chad Barrett is pretty bad and I am surprised he is still in the league. He looks like Rooney though

Timbers not too bad against Valencia, only losing 1-0. Our subs all did themselves fairly proud in the 2nd half. That's the one advantage of being a crappish team. You wind up having good "depth" as your reserves don't have much to catch up to.

Also just learned Portland has the lowest payroll, which shouldn't surprise anyone outside of Toronto.

Going to my first USMNT game in Jacksonville tomorrow against Scotland. So fecking excited. I'm expecting it to be a shitty game, just because that's my luck and it's a friendly, but I really don't care if it's 0-0 without a single shot on target.

Timbers concede again in the 83rd minute and have to settle for the tie. You can set your watch by.

Was pissing down on us as well. 77 you must have gotten soaked over in your corner.

I heard it was a downpour.

I was in Bend seeing the Shins Friday so we stayed over. Glad I did too. Galaxy next weekend.

I think the MLS needs to create a U21 or U23 league for clubs to develop players. Clubs are facing a long season with limited senior roster spots and an extremely, ridiculously low salary cap. Having a U21/U23 league would allow the club to reach down into the developmental ranks to fill in for injured players. And having a quality developmental league for prospects to compete against future players would make the league much better.

The MLS has taken great steps by introducing the academy system and bringing back the reserver league, but to truly take that next step (outside of raising the cap significantly and allowing clubs more control over player movement) the creation of a developmental league that allows academy grads/draftees to develop would be greatly beneficial to the league and USSF.

feck me. 37 shots and a missed pk from Timbers and they still lose to Wynalda's amateurs 1-0. It's rough supporting this lot. At least we don't have to lose to Seattle this way.

I've seen some people on fb going off on them today, feckin knobs.

Paulson has to be wondering if Spen's up to it right now. I think we need to stick with him till the end of the season. Getting rid of him now isn't the answer so there's no point in the RCTID crowd losing their shit and wanting him out.

I'm realistic about the Timbers, I don't have very high expectations of them. I'd obviously like to see them make the playoffs this season though but as it looks to me they're no better than last season.

LA again this weekend. From last friday to tuesday I was thinking the game was at home, I've been sending people texts saying we'll meet up saturday night...

Yeah, low expectations here as well, but I got used to it supporting Cheltenham and Volgograd (DC United on the other hand were fantastic).

Honestly though, I do wonder about Spencer's tactical acumen, but swapping coaches now wouldn't do any good. He seems a good egg as well.

Bummer about the LA game  I was pissed I was away for all the games in June, but I guess it's just the Seattle game.

Is Ballack close to signing?

Was watching the NYRB/DCU match last night and commentator said another DP signing was to be announced very soon. I figure it will be Ballack.

NY have said they are signing "a big name." I doubt it's Ballack as they have had a bit of a spat in the media. Well his agent has with NY. I imagine Ballack heads to a Chicago - have nothing but a guy feeling to back it up.

NY have been linked with Kaka and Ronaldinho

How did Sporting KC not score? They had tons of chances around the 6 yard box but Johnson stopped them all.

Chicago 1 KC 0

Rumors of Clarence Seedorf possibly signing with MLS, mainly because he's training with Los Angeles while "sorting out his future." Have no idea how the MLS will "allow" LA to have yet another DP.

Rumor Nesta is being courted by Toronto. Damn shame Anelka and Drogba chose China granted the money is considerably higher there.

Nesta went to Montreal I read.

Donovan just sold his house so if you believe the conspiracy theorists, he's finally getting sold to Everton, making way for Seedorf to join LA. NY makes more sense for him as NY needs an attacking midfielder more.

Ballack is still being vetted as a MLS transfer.

Timbers performance against Colorado was about the worst I've ever seen from a team. Couldn't string together 3 passes in a row. Apart from the getting drunk part, I'm not looking forward to tonight's offering against #1 San Jose.

I'm going tonight. Got a mate over from England who used to play for the timbers in the USL division.

I reckon Spenny has two games left to sort it out or he's walking.

Not bad eh? Having just watched Timbers look so awful vs Colorado, we're then treated to a really rather superior display in the first half against the vaunted San Jose. I don't get it. Nagbe (who I'm convinced will someday anchor the US men), Song'o, and Alexander played out of their skins that first half. We actually looked a really decent side, moving the ball around with what almost looked like composure. I hate to say it, but we looked a lot better with our 2 official central mids out of the way.

We'll fall apart again next week with LA.

FC Dallas have become garbage over the last year or so, but glad to see Ferreira back to the squad yesterday, in limited minutes. Sadly, I don't see him ever recapturing 2010 form and he's presently wasting a) a DP slot, and b) precious cap dollars. Unless he gets back to match-winning performances I wholly expect his departure in the off-season.

yeah just heard that. I liked the guy and he seemed committed, but I'd been questioning his decisions for a long time now. He just seemed determined to try to fix everything but our center mids which is what we so obviously needed.

Anyway, wish him the best. No word on who's replacing him yet.

Looks like Montreal Impact sign Nesta.

Never quite saw the logic on splashing out the dosh for a center back in this league. The role just seems too constrained for someone to be able to bring their expertise to the team as a whole. Were I a coach, it's a center mid string puller all the way. These were the guys back in the day that really were able to impose themselves on a team of hard working, but relatively guilless college kids - Etcheverry, Valderrama, Cienfuegos, Novak, Suter, Donedoni.

It's been coming a while now. Wilkinson back in charge until the end of the season, I'd get rid of him too.

No idea who'll come in but I wouldn't be surprised if Paulson has someone lined up already.

Shame about Spencer though.

I agree but Nesta is a name and will generate some ticket and merchandise sales.

A top class center midfielder would help his side run this league. Have been wishing FC Dallas would find one. Even a guy like Ireland or Jenas would be amazing in this league.

yeah I feel bad for the guy and he was fun to have around. After all those years of watching the Timbers in A League, I definitely have my doubts about Wilkinson as well. I liked him as well though. I remember when he waded into some fans when we were up in Vancouver to break up some argy-bargy. Got an ovation from both sets of fans. I think Wilkinson likes to travel a bit too much.

Anyway, I still didn't rate Spencer's decisions for the most part. Always addressing positions that weren't the problem. Wingers, the whole back line, a striker... Everything except an effective center mid.

Best of luck to him though. He'll get picked up by some other team and win the league.
