Television The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power

I don’t think they were going for a love triangle between them and Disa until next season. Those trysts need to happen organically so that an eventual threesome feels logical.
Extended edition.

Is it done? Can I finally watch it? On a scale of 1-10, how good or bad is it?

I'd give it around a 7, I'm a Tolkien fan, read the books. The writing at times is frustrating if you know the lore, but it wasn't enough for me to get pissed off by it. Acting good, visuals beautiful, music solid, I never had an issue with the dialogue but some complained about it. Writing is the main weakness of the show and it's not that bad, just feel like its the thing dragging it down right now from being a top quality show. It's a slow show, don't expect constant action, there are a lot of dialogue heavy scenes.

In hindsight I’d watch it all in a couple of binge sessions so you’re doing it right. Think caf consensus (outside of ridiculous posts saying it’s a 1 out of 10) is about 5-7/10.

Probably not what Bezos envisioned and it’s been unfavourably written about by critics but still loads of potential and, in a weird way, the backlash early on hopefully means the next season will be a lot better.

It's more bad than good, to be honest. Nice visuals most of the time. But story, dialogue and characters are crappy most of the time as well.

Fluctuates between 4 and 6/10 depending on episode so I'd give it a 5/10 average

Don't listen to the Tolkien nerds. It's very good. Even better on second viewing.

I have to disagree. And most of my complaints have hardly even been about the lore. It's just shite writing, to be honest. I do hear they are changing things up for season 2. Let's see what happens. Sometimes a series can take a season or two to grow into itself.

Yes…maybe?…5.8125/10, beautiful disaster

Thanks Caftards. Averages out to a 5.2 (thanks @Rektsanwalt).

I don’t mind a slow show, will probably welcome it since I don’t associate this universe with full on action scenes. Looking forward to a watch.

I know naff all about Tolkien, watched the original films once. Not a big TV series man. Watched as my G.F is keen.

Thought it was laughably bad by the end after being engaged enough halfway through assuming it would continue to slow build and get better.

Game of opinions though aint it - and I still scan this thread occasionally so it held my attention that much...

The criticism of the writing is pretty amusing. It's like we have the screenwriter's guild posting on here or something.

It's overall fine.
Almost like criticizing footballers while none of us even made it professionally.

Haha, I hope not. I don't think a lot of people would enjoy all that singing and dancing in the middle of an episode. :wenger:
Considering how accurate they’ve been so far with the portrayal of some key characters chances are they’ll cast Clint Eastwood for a role of a grumpy mute keeper of the woods.

I skipped all that in the books. That said it would be interesting if they ever recreate a more accurate adaptation including all the singing, dancing and poetry.

Good for you. I actually read through all that cause I was determined to read the whole damn book. :wenger::wenger::wenger:

Yeah but I used to feel guilty for doing so. Must admit I did enjoy the first book but Tolkien lost me a bit through the second. I even bought the Simarillion...only to last one page!

So anyone knows how bad/good the show has done? Like viewers/streams

I guess that will have a big inpact on what they do in season 2.
IIRC, Amazon, doesn't typically release that kind of data.

Don't be. You didn't miss much. i was tempted to skip it myself. Hahaha.

Ok thanks, would be very interesting to know. My guess its that it done good, but not as good as they thought/hoped. Based just on how many/few that watches it that i know of, and how (suprisingly?) little i have seen it been talked about online and in the media.
Anecdotally, none of my friends watched it as well. For what it's worth, there is some data for early Sept (which is only the first few episodes). No data through Oct yet to be able to gauge a trend throughout the season.

Adding some further claims from twitter.

Whereas opposite for me, most of my friends have watched it and haven't bothered with House of Dragons.

They and you should. One episode in and it's definitely a step up from rings of power. Really puts it to shame actually visually.

House of Drag Episode 1 was watched by nearly 10 million people across all platforms when it debuted — HBO's biggest series premiere ever — while Episode 2 reached 10.2 million.20 Sept 2022

This is pretty much spot on. It's not a masterpiece but it's still good and well worth a watch. Anyone who loves Middle Earth will get something from it. 7 out of 10 is totally fair.

19% of the reviews on IMDB are 1 out of 10. Who knew hardcore Tolkien nerds (virgins) were so petty? Oh just about everyone. Haha

I'd give it 7.5 just to be different. Not quite an 8 but I do think it'll get better and better like Breaking Bad.

Nah, that IP is gone for me thanks to the way GoT ended. Besides, it doesn't overly interest me, I always preferred the mystical part of GoT with the white walkers, it provided balance to all of the politics, back stabbing shite that GoT had
(which was still enjoyable, but too much is not a good thing).
