Gaming The Last Of Us

Just yanking your chain bud ;)

People obviously can be snobby, but your mentioning DS was funny to me. What's wrong, couldn't git gud?
I was contrasting a great game with great gameplay versus a game that managed to be great with unremarkable gameplay.

Isn't animal crossing just a game to train adults to do daily house chors?

Tell that to Blight Town on the original...shudder...

Considering that they now need to be taught to wash hands (and spell it seems), then that's a good thing!

I downloaded Last of Us remastered. Only because I was looking for free games on the PS store and most of the content were those battle royale multiplayer type games that I have 0 interest in and I’ve got to say it’s not bad so far!

Finished the remastered and Left Behind DLC over the weekend. Hadn't played it when it had come out cause I didn't have a PS. Gotta say, what a fecking game. It feels like a movie where you get to play the protagonist for parts of it. Gameplay ain't too shabby either.

Watching the trailers for Part 2 now and getting excited

It’s a brilliant game isn’t it? Loved the dlc too. The journey between Ellie and Joel is one of the best. Loved every minute of it.

Yes, you're correct, it is all about opinions. And it's a widely held opinion that The Last of Us is an excellent game. You can't state it to be flawless though; the very definition of the word means without flaws. The fact that you concede to the multiplayer having faults, proves the game cannot be flawless.

Like I say, The Last of Us is a pretty phenomenal game. It's one of my favourites: the story and character development manages to immerse you in a way few games match. But this comes at the obvious cost of a gameplay/mechanical perspective (the AI is pretty shitty, irrespective of difficulty; the crafting system; the combat system is quite repetitive, lag issues on PS3 etc...). In the same way a free flowing, excellent combat game (I don't know, say, Shadow of Mordor) struggles to put across a coherent plot. It's to be expected and must be contextualised. But the fact that these issues are in play proves the game just simply cannot be flawless.
Good post

Watch some videos Last of us aggressive gameplay and you will be suprised how much fun you can have in this game. It made me realise how I was playing the game wrong. This game is quite adaptable. One of best i have i ever played.

Joel’s character arc is just beautiful. He just slowly turns from this pessimistic, emotionally numb kind of guy to one that will stop at nothing to give Ellie the life his daughter never got to have. I certainly hope you get to play some more as him in part 2.

And the DLC was pretty good for explaining Ellie’s journey too. Short but sweet. It’s nice segway into part 2.

You know gamers, they'll complain about it being too "woke".

Any story can be done well if the writing is good and if they let the characters lead the way rather than the agenda. I think that has been the problem with much modern media, the agenda's have been central and it has suffocated character growth and turned people off. Given how exceptional Naughty Dog have been with writing(at least compared to most gaming companies) I am inclined to trust that they will do it with nuance.

People see agendas in everything. They saw agendas in Left Behind as well, whereas I only saw a touching story about two wonderful characters.

It was superb, added to the story and the characters and felt entirely natural and organic.

So it turns out that plot leak was fake.

Be warned some footage leak of second game has happened which shows some major spoilers and people are ruining it on twitter especially on PlayStation twitter account. Just mute "last of us" on Twitter if you want to avoid seeing it.

Still mad about the delay. No way they should have delayed it. Amazon is still delivering ffs. I have it bought digitally anyway. I swear I knew every game was coming out around winter time. Always happens. Least Cyberpunk has some sense. Can’t wait for that

I don't buy their reason, it doesn't make sense. It's 2020, digital sales are the norm now. Those who prefer physical sales could expect some minor delays but is that such a big deal? Now everyone has to wait longer anyway, how is that any better? Just release the damn thing and let it all sort itself out. Unless it's simply not finished in time (again), and they don't want to admit it.

I'm sure they've done the Math but given the sales of Doom Eternal and FFVII, it must be something beyond copies sold. Maybe they're expecting more PS4 sales on the back of the release and seeing as they can't keep up with production right now they want to wait.

So the rumours are a disgruntled employee leaked it because of unpaid overtime from Naughty Dog.

What a wankstain. I understand being pissed off at that but possibly ruining something for millions is not a proportional response.

I can sympathise. Being unpaid after horrid working environments is shitty during normal times. Even more so given the current state of the world.

Ok I'm clogging up the thread for the 2nd game with talk about the first.

Combat I'm struggling with still, proper half arsed the way it is imo.

Guns, you might aswell just stab then if you gotta be that close, not one gun appears to have any affect after about 5 feet

Why the feck are people trying to kill me? Ramming down gates in their armoured truck, wasting any amount of bullets? I've missed this part of the story, I know they're like rebels, but surely they're opportunists, don't really understand why I'm their enemy?

Also, this truck chase is in just about every game, as is a stupid swimming part. Wish they'd stop doing it. (I know this is older than other games which do it).

Story wise it seems ok so far, gameplay is meh. Don't think it has aged well in terms of mechanics.

Be gentle mate. Game is 7 years old. Was a hell of a game when it came out.

Yeah, I keep reminding myself of that, it's got better as it's progressed.

Most faults with it are the faults with most games. I can see why it was a too game when it was released, but at the same time, I'd still say it's overrated by its fans. Has a lot of faults as do most games.

Emphasis on being quiet, then everyone bangs and shouts

Loving the different locations, just finished the hydro dam section, was a nice surprise to have something like that.

They're making a film too aren't they? That could be epic. Probably feck it up though :(

I also couldn’t get into it because of gameplay despite numerous attempts. It just feels so clunky and horrible, especially going back to it.

I’m desperate to finish it though so that I can jump on the hype train for the second one. Might just have to chuck it on easy.

Yeah, fling it on easy, you manage to get enough pickups to keep stocked up and if a clicker grabs you on easy you can just shiv it instead of insta death.

I'm enjoying it much more after the Bill section. That's around 3-4 hours in I think, it's usually where I have up. Will finish it this time I think though.

I've just met Henry and Sam. Don't really know how far it is, but in all honestly I can't remember much about the game up util that point it was so long ago I played it.

I'm toying with the idea of starting again, but tbh my main aim is to get through the story as quickly as possible in preparation for the sequel.

Not much has happened upto that point imo, your daughter died at the start, you've been travelling and trying to get Ellie to the fireflies. That's about it tbh.

Why would a film based on a story you don't have time for be epic ? I just can't really see how a 90 minute film could have the same emotional impact as playing a character driven game this well made for 25 hours.

I didn't say I don't have time for the story? It's the gameplay mechanics I'm not liking.

A film is much easier to sit back and watch without thinking "gotta clunk about and try killing all this shite soon". A film is 90 minutes? Didn't know that rule?

How much actual storyline / dialogue do you think is actually in the game removing all parts where you're sneaking about or shooting, or filler bits of "get a raft and take it to Ellie" ?

The setting is brilliant, and the movement between places is cool, the relationship between Ellie and Joel is good too. I've not finished it yet but can see more story opening up. (It got rave reviews for story, not the gameplay?)

A film with the same basic outline doesn't have to follow the exact path of the games either.

It's not going to be a film, it's going to be a TV show. HBO is doing it.

Yeah I had a quick check and seen it was a TV series. Didn't read how far on they were with it though. Probably better pacing than a film aswell, although a film could have been broken into a trilogy or something.

Well, they've just announced their first director. It's the guy who recently worked on Chernobyl. And if they going to move forward with this whole thing, I think a TV show is a way to go personally. I think it's a good medium for this particular story.

You seem to be having some issues with the gameplay. Personally I didn't mind the gameplay, but it has been a few years since I played it. I played it once on the PS3 then bought the remastered on the PS4 and played it again. So that was about 5 or 6 years ago. Which in gaming terms if a lifetime when you consider how fast things change. I would say that stealth it the way to go. While guns can obviously be used, I would often choose to stab an enemy and sneak up on them if possible. The game is obviously designed not to be your typical 3rd person shooter where you can just blast enemies away with abandon. That's not to excuse the gameplay because it probably doesn't hold up to be fair, especially when you compare it to more modern games.

But I liked the crafting system and creating traps, etc, which I found worked well for taking out most enemies. But yeah, the characters and the story is obviously the main draw here. The gameplay in the sequel is supposed to be very good though from what I've been reading.
