Gaming The Last Of Us

Just finished the game and the DLC in around 19 hours.

Beautiful story, acting and setting but it did feel a little short. I think I was really expecting one of them to die so the ending feels a little, not underwhelming but abrupt!

It's probably just having come straight into it after sinking 100 hours into Horizon.
I giggle in delight at the thought you coming upon the
hotel basement
for the first time...

I held back from reading this until just now but I think I got quite lucky on that part! I got such a fright I legged it straight upstairs and by fluke found myself in a handy hiding spot from where I could pepper the fecker with molotovs!

Because that went so well, I spent the rest of the game expecting some monstrosity to jump out and make me shit myself!

Honestly I felt the hardest part of the whole game was that first Clicker and 5 stalkers interaction. Once I figured that out it all felt more natural.

I'd say 19 hours for story driven, linear experiences like this is plenty. I think people are growing used to open worlders with so much padding that 50+ hours has become a new norm, but I'm actually in favour of games not lasting any longer than they should. There's not enough in The Last of Us to sustain a longer experience from a gameplay point of view and its story was told perfectly. It's exactly as long as it should be in my opinion.

That's a great point. It's surely a good sign that I was so immersed that I got a shock when it ended though!

I felt it was a bit on the short side. Point taken about the expectations from open world games but the Uncharted games for example didnt feel quite so short, and neither did they feel like they went on too long.

Its not a big criticism, its better to leave you wanting more than become a bore. But I think it could have been longer than it was.

I disagree. Then length of the game was perfect.

The amount of games today that are '50 hour experiences' just because they are filled with pointless fetch quests annoy me. TLOU felt perfect.

Having recently finished this and Left Behind for the second time, I can't believe I waited this long for a replay. All this time I was convinced I had it in my top three video games of all time, but now I'm absolutely certain it's right at the very top. Pretty much every other game out there feels banal compared to this. Reading through the thread again I'm appalled to see I was initially disappointed with Left Behind. It's stunning, we only spend a short time witnessing the bond between Ellie and Riley but the experience has such a powerful emotional impact. Joel, Ellie, Riley, even Sarah with her extremely limited screen time, these are characters I'll carry with me for the rest of my life.

And just like that, the long wait until The Last of Us 2 hits becomes unbearable. Feck.

This game was so emotionally draining that I wouldn't mind a 2 year gap before another installment of the feels.

Its at the very top for me too

Funnily when I was reading through this thread a few weeks ago I noticed I had initally posted it might be a little overrated when I first played it unpon release. Now I remember that my 1st playthrough was on the hardest difficulty, so it was a real slog

My 2nd and 3rd playthrough were on normal, so I was able to enjoy the story etc… far more

Man, you need to go and do it on the hardest difficulty now, on a + 1 game.

Really have the urge to play this again. It's the greatest game ever made in my opinion. Just flawless really.

I can't think of many games where a person would platinum the game and still want to come back and play it.

Just out of curiosity is there a noticeable difference between PS4 and PS4 pro version with 4K TV? I may just hold off until I get my new TV and PS4 pro sorted!

It's certainly not flawless - it has many flaws. It's just absolutely exceptional in what it exceeds in.

I haven't finished it yet, I've barely started it tbh I should go back and play it through

What could have been better? Gameplay? Story? The multiplayer? I can think that maybe multiplayer was not for everybody, but after that I really can not find any faults with it. Of course it's all about opinions :)

Yes, you're correct, it is all about opinions. And it's a widely held opinion that The Last of Us is an excellent game. You can't state it to be flawless though; the very definition of the word means without flaws. The fact that you concede to the multiplayer having faults, proves the game cannot be flawless.

Like I say, The Last of Us is a pretty phenomenal game. It's one of my favourites: the story and character development manages to immerse you in a way few games match. But this comes at the obvious cost of a gameplay/mechanical perspective (the AI is pretty shitty, irrespective of difficulty; the crafting system; the combat system is quite repetitive, lag issues on PS3 etc...). In the same way a free flowing, excellent combat game (I don't know, say, Shadow of Mordor) struggles to put across a coherent plot. It's to be expected and must be contextualised. But the fact that these issues are in play proves the game just simply cannot be flawless.

It is as perfect a single player game as I've ever played

Couldn't give toss about the multi player, but apparently that was also quite popular

Bought this back in spring but haven't even started yet. Waiting for the dark nights and bad weathers to settle in.

Aside from all the wanking about how good of a story it is, is it actually a really fun game to play? I started it years ago on PS3 but it glitched out on a level so never touched it again. Could be the time to start the remastered version.

For me it was fun til I got to a late boss fight and literally had no ammo or anything. I really need to play it through before 2. I lost all my saves when switching from disc to digital.

It’s good straightforward action, like Uncharted. If you’re one of those gaming snobs that thinks every game has to be Dark Souls you might not like it.

You know, some people just have different tastes. Not everyone is some stupid label just because they don't like the gameplay in your "bestest game eva!" I'm sorry but this kind of equally shite reaction to the snobs bugs me when it comes to recommendations on what people spend their money on.

@Vidic_In_Moscow It's okay gameplay wise. It's not the best in it's genre, it wasn't close even at the time, but it's fun enough to make the whole experience worthwhile. It was never in my top ten, but like the Witcher 3 the experience is awesome and I can see why people have it in theirs.

I got half way through the game without realising I could change weapon. I have been using the two same weapons throughout.

It’s true though. There are gaming snobs that act like that, so I don’t understand your shite reaction.

The gameplay is nothing special. It's essentially a more grounded Uncharted from what I remember, but the bullet sponge enemies actually make sense here. It's fun to play and the story is excellent. It's a very good game, but I wouldn't have it in my top 10 ever or anything.

Thanks for the replies. Might try something else perhaps. There's a few games that people seem to love that aren't in my wheelhouse that I feel I owe a chance, thinking of God of War, Bloodborne & The Witcher. Some of these games look amazing just on graphics alone.

"Omg bestest game eva! If you disagree I'll compare it to a game literally no one else has then call you a snob!"

It's absolutely fine to ask a question about gameplay in a video game you know. Making a bizarre comparison to a game in a completely different genre is just, well, bizarre.

Bloodborne is the best out of all these games. The lore, gameplay, setting are all great. The learning curve is perhaps a bit much, if you aren't used to the soulsbourne style, but it's rewarding enough to try. GoW isn't far behind, though I personally found the level/enemy spawn design way too try hard and ultimately a bit boring by the end.

TLOU and W3 are both truly great experiences and the gameplay in both is functional enough not to be an anchor, but neither come anywhere near close in gameplay terms to the above. IMO of course.

I'd say The Witcher 3 is the best of those games, but I'm biased in that it's my favourite game ever. It can be a bit clunky at times but the combat is fun, the story is excellent and the world a gorgeous place to get lost in. It also has 80+ hours of content if you want it with very little filler. The filler is there, but can very easily be completely ignored. Like TLOU it has some of the best writing in gaming and is amazingly reactionary in the writing and the way you can do things.

Although to be honest if none of the three are in your wheelhouse then they are probably a big time commitment for something you don't enjoy so you might be better with something else you know you will enjoy.

I’m not debating with someone who said some variation of ‘OMG bestest eva’ in two consecutive posts.

don't listen to redlambs, he just wants people to play games that make you really angry and want to shoot yourself in the face because he wants you to be as miserable as he is. yea bitch wha

Animal Crossing is for real gamers.

Just because you can't git gud and handle it, don't come crying to me.
In all seriousness RL I'm glad you're here, I respect understand know your opinion on games and it helps knowing which games not to buy once I see you say you like them. Thanks mate.
