Television The Last of Us - TV Series HBO | NO GAME REFERENCES OR SPOILERS | Receives 24 Emmy nominations

Details are emerging that next week's episode, the last of the season, will be the shortest episode of the season. Not sure what that means, but we do know there's a season 2.

Reviewers already said that the first season will cover the entirety of the first game. So don't think we are getting a cliff hanger.

What is this based on a game ffs.

Honestly first few episodes were great now it’s all samey.

Another great episode, but have no idea what to expect next week for the finale. I can't see it being wrapped up all that well, but let's see.

One small problem I had though was Joel's revival. He was basically dead, but then one (maybe two) shot of penicillin and he's up knocking lads out and then walking a few miles to the village.

But anyway, not a big deal. It's been a really enjoyable series so far.
The HBO modus operandi is for the penultimate episode to be the best/climatic episode, and the actual finale to just open things up for the next season.

Some great scenes with also some very typical superhero/villain tropes that partially ruin it.

I don't like one villain per episode type format, but then I get that it's coming from the game so they have to build it in such a way. It's difficult to get to know villains properly through this, other shows build them up really well.

Im just so happy they've done it justice, can't believe how good the actors have been.

Eh, not sure I agree with that. It's not like HBO is deciding what happens here, it's all down to the showrunners, the writers and the directors. Also I can't really think of any non-GoT examples of that.

Can't see that being the case here as it's already following a storyline.

Great episode. I'm still thinking last week's episode didn't need as much dedicated to it and they could have put part of this ep into last (maybe stop it where Ellie is taken)

Ellies actress was great this episode especially the ending. Can't believe it's the finale already next week

I just don’t think you can really have longer term villains as the whole journey is moving from place to place. You did have that two episode arc of a villain in episodes like 4/5.

Yea that's true, difficult to have that with the format. The villain you mentioned is what disappointed me, I really liked her and the way they were building her story but then it ended in a couple of episodes.

True. I read on here they will have the story complete by series one. I thought this was like halfway through the story and David was like a mid level boss.

Absolutely Brilliant show. Wish it was maybe two episodes longer but can't have everything.

Done the Game justice. (Although I still recommend everyone play the games)

Like with books the original is still superior. But that isn't a knock on the show on the slightest

Episode 9 is 45 min which makes it the shortest of all episodes. Bit surprised considering final episodes are generally longer

Right now, i think all episodes bar 7, have been really really good. 7 for me dragged, and could have been cut.

it’s quite hard for me to know what non game players think needs to still be resolved, but I wouldn’t say there are an awful lot of loose dangling threads to tie up, as it’s been quite episodic…. People in the game thread have been whining for weeks that they “won’t be able to fit it all in!!” whilst completely ignoring that they aren’t going to spend 40 minutes of each episode straffing behind obstacles and picking up craft weapons… it should be perfectly doable to make a very good episode of what’s left in 45 minutes.

It certainly doesn’t feel like they’ve been limited in what they can show or how long the eps can be so far, so it’s likely a choice, and that’s just how long the remaining story took.

Sorry if that’s tangentially game talk.

As a non game player I'm not sure what to expect at all from the final episode. It's not really clear to me what this season is building towards, I suppose they may finally encounter the fireflies? But I would have thought that encounter could span over a couple of episodes not just a finale.

Ellie might have won herself an Emmy with that

Just finished 7. Some nice moments but not an episode I'd ever watch again in a hurry

7 was a waste of time. How many episodes until final if anyone knows?

9 episodes in total. Finale is next week. 45 minutes, shortest episode of the series. Show is based on a game.

You mean apart from being a hugely vital part of the backstory?

A large part of the back story was already covered in previous episodes. There’s no need to go back in time and waste an hour on it, very obvious and predictable.

On a side not pleasing the last episode is next week. Just hoping they don’t drag this out for 5 seasons.

Did you know Ellie was gay and in love with her best friend and that she (presumably) had to kill her after they were both bit?

I had no problem with ep7 and it’s again, a big part of the game.

That didn’t need to be dragged out over an hour.

Tbh I agree with you. Think the backstory part could have been shortened and they could have gone back to real time and progressed that.

Don't want to say it was a slow ep but it did feel stretched for the flashback part.

I can't remember 100% now but I'm pretty sure the flashback to how Ellie got bit and her relationship with her best friend was DLC for the game and not part of the original game itself. It was a fairly stretched out bit of additional content you could play as a standalone (and wasn't that fun to play either, much like watching the show), probably added an extra hour to the game, so I can see why they wanted to tell that story in its entirety during the show.

The lack of encounters with infected people has been a let down. The stress and tension from that element is really missed.
