Gaming The Last of Us Part II (PS4)

Apologies, it's hard to tell via posts

I feel ya, I’m constantly second-guessing intent behind text. Should’ve chucked in a green smiley ;)

I’d be seriously bewildered and judgemental if you said "not buying this, female protagonist for the lose", but having a preference for immersion reasons is fair enough.

I still don't really get it. Most of the dialogue and interactions are in cut scenes and third person anyway, is there really that much a difference between doing the actual gameplay as Ellie instead of Joel?

It's not like it's a first person game where you never see your character and you decide what they say.

Gameplay previews are dropping right now.

It definitely looks like they're 'widening' the corridor of play a bit, giving it a more open world feel and I can see what someone referred to as a bit of RDRII about the horse scenes. Can't wait.

I like that it’s easy to immerse yourself into a reality where there’s a zombie apocalypse going on, but being a woman...... nah, that’s a bridge too far, immersion shattered.

Same reason why i can't play car games. Just can't imagine what it's like being a car.

Yeah everything i've read so far suggests that this is going to be a big game (in terms of length and scope), i just hope it doesn't outstay its welcome. I'm sure to won't; i have faith in Naughty Dog.

This sucks. I was a huge fan of the multiplayer from the first game.

I'm also not sure I buy the whole 'we need to drop MP to focus on single player' angle. They've made fantastic games in the past which has MP tagged on, and the whole multiplayer element means you get a tonne more hours out of a purchase.

Was almost certainly going to pre-order but will not do so now, and will instead wait for the price to drop.

One of my fav mp pvp experiences. This is sad.

Same. Was a really tactical, team-oriented shooter with some interesting mechanics and a great pace/feel to it all.

Very different from your standard 'run and gun' shooters that flood the market so a fantastic niche that I really enjoyed.

So it’s on two discs, wtf?

I wonder how big it’s going to be to download.

I take it it's already been mentioned that the bit where Ellie an Joel talk the hand that covers her mouth looks younger and very clean, also she's outdoors and when it cuts to him he's in a house? Edited to look like they're talking when they aren't.

Fair points.

it's the same scene. One of the people who got to play it says so. (20:45 min of the video if the time is not embedded)

I honestly don't think they are that stupid to spoil a major thing in a game trailer. It might be misleading or something.

I suppose you're mentioning Joel's appearance? it's in the gameplay some from the gaming industry got to preview. And I don't this they would be misleading in the gameplay preview itself. Anyway, I think Joel dying during part 2 helping Ellie instead of having died in the lead up would be more impacting.

Not all the game footage shown makes it to the original game at the end but either way, I don't think they will be stupid to spoil any major thing from a game that's known to be very story heavy. Everything shown will either be misleading information or something you will know from the very early hours of the game, so I don't agree with the idea of treating the trailer as a spoiler thing or avoid watching it to not get spoiled etc. They aren't that stupid. They will show in the trailer what they want the people to know or guess.

By the way they said that they had so many ideas to expand the MP that they are doing those ideas on a separate game, I'm assuming on the PS5.

The multiplayer was a big surprise for me in how much I got into it, sort of like Mass Effect 3's was (insofar as going into something I considered strictly single player but loving the MP).

I’ve always felt that TLOU was a bit overrated. I like the story more than the gameplay. It feels like Naughty Dog liked Manhunt and decided on trying to create their own version of that engine and mechanics... Third person stealth action with survival horror elements, set in a messed up world where all humans are shitty people. Not to mention in the multiplayer there’s options to perform brutal executions a la Manhunt.

Heck, the David boss fight is essentially the Piggsy boss fight in Manhunt.

I’m also curious whether how much wokeness is going to seep into this game (if any at all). Please keep fecking politics out of my video games.

I'm very curious to know when politics weren't a big part of story focused games? Is it because you don't like the message perhaps?

Is having a lesbian romance in a video game really all it takes for gamers to start talking about "wokeness" and "fecking politics"? Because I struggle to see what else people would be referring to.

Yep, the most successful games have always had big elements of politics. Rockstar games like GTA have not so subtle digs at capitalism, privacy and racism amongst other things. Red Dead Redemption has one long arc after another about racism, classism and suffering of native american people, Metal Gear Solid series is one big ode to peace and nuclear non proliferation.

Meanwhile TLOU has one story arc about a same sex couple and people are ready to lose their shit about wokeness.

Yes.

"Oh no, she's attracted to someone of the same sex! Stop ramming it down our throats, Naughty Dog"

Like any group in the world, they do have crazy conservatives, and usually they are a loud minority everywhere they go.

Representation of gay people, like many other kinds of people, is very weak in gaming, hopefully if executed and recieved well in The Last of Us it can bring change to the whole industry.

Ellie already had something of a romance with Riley (who was black, scandalous!) in Left Behind, ending with a kiss. Why is being treated like a new development? I can't remember that being treated like a big deal when it came out.

Because the majority of people did't know about it. Either from not playing the DLC, or not playing the game full stop. It was only when it was put into the mainstream by having it at E3 did people lose their shit.

It's ridiculous.

I hope you're not referring to me and my earlier post here. I don't care if they are gay, straight, bi, etc.

I just don't want a love story full stop, unless it's only a small part of the story. From the look of the preview I believe will that it will only be a minor part.

I think it's more about people who are saying "stop shoving politics down our throats" because it's a lesbian relationship.

It's not suddenly going to turn into the video game equivalent of an uplifting romantic movie. Everything points to it being a revenge tale of some sorts, most likely with Ellie's romantic interest as a significant motivation. It's certainly going to be a story with love as an important theme, just as it was an important theme in the original game (just not romantic love) and in Left Behind.

It wasn't actually aimed at you, no. To be honest i didn't see what you posted until i just went back a few pages to see what you had written to understand why you would think it was aimed at you. And then i seen this:

but you know we are living in these PC times. I just hope they don't shove the lesbian thing down our throats.

So yeah...

From the game play itself, looks like the game is going to be a lot more challenging than the last iteration, which was a hard game itself. The enemies seem a lot more dynamic and the stealth combat requires a lot more constant movement than ambushing enemy NPCs.

I also heard that dogs are supposed to be a real pain in the arse. They can track your scent and are very aggressive when doing so.
